I was reading through this post here. And I started thinking about how "entitlement" much like "toxic masculinity" has become a catch-all for "Man doing/wanting thing I disapprove of"

And I started thinking more and more on it. Why is this term used when so many others would be appropriate?

When feminists are asked about the problem with "nice guys"

They'll say it's "Entitlement and ulterior motives, basically."

Even though when you actually ask these and hear them out they'll tell you in no uncertain terms that most of them have been inundated with messages telling them that their sexuality is predatory and that their interest is unwanted. while only getting platitudes like "be nice" or "read more books by women"

When men express that they're frustrated that they're lonely they're often met with accusatory diatribes about how they're not entitled to sex or a relationship.

When men express that it's confusing and frustrating that drug addicts who beat their girlfriends and wives are having more luck than them. The same accusations of Entitlement!?! "

When men vent about being absolutely invisible. And how it would be nice to get complimented occasionally. They're often told something along the lines of "Quit acting like you're Entitled to women's attention"

But Here's the thing

Never in any of those circumstances was there an implication of naturally deserving any of those things. It was never established that these things should just be given to the men in question as a right.

And there's a big difference between being upset that you desire something that you don't have. and being upset that you're being denied something that you're entitled to.

Nobody leverages these accusations against people who are upset about things like not being able to find nice clothes. or not being able to afford a car.

In fact, In many cases we'd say that the person making these accusations is being shitty.

So why are they made?

Because of the pathologizing/demonizing assumptions about the way men think that are seen as inherent to the people that make them.

IF you assume that men see women as objects to own. Then the only reason they could feel upset at being lonely and not having a relationship is because of entitlement.

When you assume men are brought up to believe that women should be subservient to them. Then the only reason they'd be upset at not getting any attention from them is Entitlement

This also answers the question in the initial post I linked.

When you see men trying their hardest to try and get women's attention to the point of being an annoyance or even harassment. and you have these pre baked notions about how men think. it follows that this must ACTUALLY be Entitlement And not simply a negative outcome of men being expected to initiate everything as part of our gender roles.
