Shockingly, this is contradicted by the fact that rape is considered a horrific crime to do against women, and is sometimes said to be worse than death. You can even make the case that this viewpoint is sexist to women, that if they weren't treated so fundamentally different than men, that we would see their rape as wrong and a crime, but not some irreparable violation of their person that is unique to women. Unsurprisingly, women are not advocating to make rape seem less serious, they want it to be so deadly serious that any woman should be believed if they were brave enough to make such a claim, regardless of the circumstances.

Sociopathy/Psychopathy. You cant really rape without one of these or judgment impairing substances. When you are numb to the suffering of someone such things are easy to fathom. But the average person isnt numb to such things so it's hard to picture such an act for most of them.

I'm going to leave a dry answer so as to overcome my knee-jerk reaction.

Why do rapists rape is a difficult enough question to answer. The other commenters are upset with a culture that sees the gendered nature of rape as being one of male perpetration.

The spectrum of male rape as the norm is based more on perception and definition setting than the actual reality of a place and time. The gender split may be 100-0 (when the law codifies a definition that states only men can rape). It may be 99-1 for convictions of rape (convicted rapists are a small fraction of all rapists). Once you look at victimization surveys, you notice that both the victimization rate and the gender split goes closer to 50-50.

Back to your post, I don't think men, including male rapists, think of rape as a non-crime. Most sex offenders* know that what they're doing is wrong. They don't do it out in the open. They wouldn't like if they themselves got assaulted. The error is failing to treat others as oneself would like to be treated.

*Some perpetrators of sexual assault don't know what they're doing is wrong. This is often true for many juvenile sex offenders. Keep in mind that most "young boys" don't know what rape is, or wouldn't even think of doing it. I don't think the culture instructs young boys to rape, but there are societal factors that lead a small minority of vulnerable boys and girls into becoming offenders. Back to your question, I assume that you presume that male rapists have different motives for female rapists. I have no idea if they're different, since I haven't read much on female rapists, but here's a tiny bit on motivations for rape.

Most will be psychopaths. Some may be so desperate to have sex that they'll even choose the most immoral means for it. The only wrong answer is that they do it because society belittles the crime and we live in a rape culture.

"rape" is imo the same as fgm. From what the UK govt describes, both rape and fgm are forms of something bad, sexual assault and circumcision, that are specific to women. Rape can only really happen to women where i am from, but assault can happen to both men and women.

So men do rape, because some people rape. Women can sexually assault but it isnt always counted as rape

Actually no. 50% of DV is reciprocal and in 70% of non reciprocal DV women are aggressors. Even in reciprocal it’s usually the woman who strikes first
