Poor kid was a foster child. She didn’t HAVE to be his guardian.

Why do we hear so many of these stories. Arent foster parents supposed to be loving? I mean they chose this...

“You’re not taking care of this child correctly. We’re placing him in this foster family who is surely not just in it for the money.”

[–]SlashSpiritLink 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I feel like the point is "be kind to this kid and we'll reward you for doing well", which is also pretty sad

[+]killerbake -93 points-92 points-91 points 6 years ago (29 children) | Copy Link

Mhmm. This is why universal basic income needs to be a thing

[–][deleted] 58 points59 points60 points 6 years ago (28 children) | Copy Link

This is the wildest reason I've seen someone asking for Universal Basic Income and I have no idea how this would fix foster parents or murdered children

[–]InsiderT -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Not to be a dick but low income and debt are so often associated with loss of children because a person in those situations can not afford to defend against accusations and often cannot afford to appear in court in the first place.

Even the best employers can only afford to give so much leeway for you to appear in court before they have to put their own business interests ahead of your family court needs. And if the parent chooses unemployment in order to make their court appearances, that choice is actually used against them in court to show they’re unqualified to be guardians.

UBI would absolutely help those parents that want to provide for their children but can’t due to misfortune, illness, or a combination.

UBI would also significantly reduce or even eliminate the incentive for less-than-ideal candidates to maintain a facade of lies to keep themselves qualified or if we’re being really negative, the money to bribe persons in official capacities that take a cut. After all, why work so hard at deception and risk your free UBI?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

After all, why work so hard at deception and AT ALL & risk your free UBI?

FTFY

[–]InsiderT 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Did you though? Working a legitimate job won't risk your UBI. Going to prison will. So what did you fix exactly?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

So you should get UBI whether you work or not? Wouldn't that just make things exactly the same as they are now? I live in the UK and we almost have UBI, it's called Universal Credit and a person can claim Universal Credit if they are out of work, it's like £100 a week or something small... People just lie claim it and say they are unemployed and work cash in hand jobs at the same time. Often "single parents" will claim it but have their partner who works full time living at their address unregistered. It's a heavily abuseable system. Unless you are legitimately to sick to work (Disabled/Terminally Ill) then I think you should be left to rot if you aren't providing for society.

Raising Children is not providing for society, get a job and pay for day care, in turn giving more people jobs to look after your kids... Childcare too expensive? GET INTO CHILDCARE AND LOOK AFTER YOUR KID WHILE YOU WORK.

People are just so fucking lazy and want everything for nothing it makes me sick.

[+]killerbake -47 points-46 points-45 points 6 years ago (19 children) | Copy Link

Well the logic would be they wouldnt need a foster child just to use them for the $. And no one was asking.

But go off I guess.

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points21 points 6 years ago (18 children) | Copy Link

I can't see your emoji's so idk what they are meant to be.

So you think Universal Income will stop people fostering a child? Surely fostering a child would still give them more Universal Income to cover the cost of the child as well? I don't see how this fixes anything

[+]killerbake -38 points-37 points-36 points 6 years ago (17 children) | Copy Link

I didn’t use any emoji‘s. And yes a person with basic universal income who would only foster a child for money probably wouldn’t even look into fostering a child.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points23 points 6 years ago (12 children) | Copy Link

Just so I'm getting this clear.

You think that a person who fosters a child only for money, would not bother looking into making even more money by fostering a child as well as earning Universal Basic Income if that was an option? They would just be content with the standard Basic Income?

I’ve been saying this to my friends and they disagree, but our governments really should restrict parenting to people who have gone through evaluation and gotten a ‘parent license’ showing they are decent human beings.

If a couple do not have a license and are expecting a baby, they should be required to be evaluated, if they do not pass, the child goes to a foster home where the guardians have a parenting license.

The reason why my friends disagreed with me here is all the complications. There’s a lot I won’t go into detail with, but i believe this could increase morality in children and decrease domestic mortality

Edit: so people are still seeing and replying to this comment, so let me add a few extra things. If the licensing was completely free, if it didn’t allow the government to silence people (?) or keep the rich in power (again a ?) I believe it can help fight against domestic child abuse and neglect, as I said in a comment replying to someone. I never said, or don’t see how, this could favour the rich. I never said children with lower levels of education will be sent away, that’s not abuse or neglect! I can see reddit likes to add their own things to make something that never meant any of what they say look evil.

And I’ll say this again. Yes, there are complications to my idea. Yes there’s things I didn’t fully explore because I simply do not have the time to write down 3000 words to keep you happy. Now can people stop yelling at eachother about government corruption? Obviously there’s other ways then implementing something across the country. Start smaller, less strict. Do experiments ect

[–]Neehigh 19 points20 points21 points 6 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

I hear you, but absolutely this would become an issue of ‘they haven’t provided evidence of ____ resources for the growth/development of their maybe child, they do not receive a license’, thus removing the legal possibility of people whose only crime is to be poor from having children.

[–]Steaky-Pancaky 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

My idea of it is to lessen the possibility of an abusive or a neglectful person/s keeping a child. If there wasn’t a cost for all of the licensing stuff, it’d be somewhat better right?

Because typically when a society engages in this sort of authoritarian action the end result is a nightmare fueled dystopia, often ending in violent revolution.

Messing with one of humanity's most base drivers is not something you do consequence free.

Again, you mess with a primal urge like reproduction at your considerable peril, both on an individual level and a societal one. Not to mention the inevitable abuse that would come from having the state run this.

If you were looking to start a peasants revolt you'd be hard pressed to come up with a more effective means of fomenting one.

I would suppose a system like this would favor the rich and presumably keep lower income people from being able to have kids. It's a pretty dystopian thing to advocate for the government to be able to dictate who can and cannot reproduce, it's coming close to eugenics.

good for you. your idea however is stupid. the over all cost benefit of your proposed system, wether counted in money or the greater good, would probably be negligible or in minus. the only good that could come of it would be its potential to drastically reduce humanities rate of overpopulating the planet.

[–]bladerunnerjulez -1 points0 points1 point 6 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Ok smart guy, how would something like this be enforced? All it takes to procreate is two people of the opposite sex, you would have to have a mechanism to stop people from having sex or forced birth control for everyone.

but our governments really should restrict parenting to people who have gone through evaluation and gotten a ‘parent license’ showing they are decent human beings.

While I see where you're going in concept.. do you really want to grant a government that kind of power? These people can't even be asked to read the things they vote on a good chunk of the time. And don't even get me started on the corruption angle. Giving the government authority on who gets to breed is dangerous

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Fuck that. I’ve had many, many dealings with DHR/CPS over the years (as an attorney - not as a “client”). This would end disastrously..

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Uhhh hell no. The amount of control you're proposing over other people is absolutely ridiculous.

[–]bdlcalichef 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Fantastic idea on paper, but as you know the foster system is a complete shit show now. Imagine taking away something like 25% or more if the children in homes now and putting them in foster care.

[–]i_am_control 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

No way that would ever end badly.

[–]Steaky-Pancaky 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Hey I did say there are many complications

[–]i_am_control 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

If by complications you mean turning into a giant eugenics project, then yes.

[–]huckster235 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Let's do forced sterilization while we are at it.

No way this could disproportionately affect minorities or poor people. That'd never happen /s.

[–]RedEgg16 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

How do you get paid for adopting kids? All I’ve heard is “adopting children is expensive too”

[–]mellinhead 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Adopting through the foster system is different than private adoption. Private adoption is an entirely different beast.

[–]RedEgg16 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

[–]RedEgg16 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Sooo, you can get paid 3k to foster???

[–]-dishrag- 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Varies greatly from case to case. And no it's usually not that much. If a child has special needs the amount can climb up to 2K or over to help cover their needs. Probably varies fron state to state as well. I think it's more common to be around ther $400-700 range.

[–]Soy_tu_papi 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Where are foster parents getting 3k a month per child? I've done it for years and each kid was about 450 a month. This is in Utah. I spend more than that on the kids' food, clothing, and activities so I have a hard time believing your blanket statement.

[–]babbitypuss 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

This.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Being a long-term foster parent I can tell you there is no state that pays anywhere close to that. With a special needs placement we “might” get $850. I believe your comment is made-up.

[–]philmtl 19 points20 points21 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Was in foster care, not in Hawaii but it's about money the more kids you can raise on less money the more profitable it is.

In my case my actual family had to fight the people raising a 2 year old on coke and cheetos to get me back I wasn't officially adopted till 14. For the rest of those kids good luck

[–]totallythebadguy 17 points18 points19 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Most do it for money

[–]Vault_0_dweller 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You must not look at the foster system much. My ex wife was a foster child and she went to a few houses where the parents just had a farm of kids racking in thwt goverment assistance. And not using any of it on the kids. Most foster parents do it to make money when and it comea at the kids expense.

[–]bilbo-ballbag 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Because some foster parents just take kids to get a paycheck. It’s horrible, and we need to have better vetting processes for foster parents along with regular psychological visits for the child.

The system essentially throws these kids away. Handing them over to terrible people without due diligence or proper oversight. It’s abhorrent. And the reason we don’t do better is because we just cannot stop prioritizing money over human decency.

[–]outlawa 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I've only known 2 people that were foster parents. So my very low sample pool can't begin to paint an overall picture of foster parents. But the two that knew were some of the most "who gives a crap" people that I knew. The honestly did not care about the kids. At all.

[–]efactory 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

As FrangiTango said, many foster parents are in it for the money. But that's not surprising. What I suspect is the culprit is the system is way overloaded, and the agencies skip over even the minimal amount of due diligence needed to screen out the undesirable foster parent applicants, just to process the load.

It's totally abhorrent and devastating. That kid was 3yo. I can't fathom how anyone could possibly lose it over someone that young.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points14 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

CPS needs to be fucking disbanded and investigated from top to bottom in most states.

[–]randomdarkbrownguy 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I know this Is probably biased since most news is negative but all I've ever heard of CPS is taking kids away from parents for dumb reasons or them not investigating actual child neglect n shit.

[–]gaia2008 8 points9 points10 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

But she gets paid and the State gets a pretty penny too from the federal gov

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

She even has the option to give them back. Life in prison seems like the only just option here. I wish we could send people who do heinous crimes like this to prison in North Korea as punishment. Seriously NK could make a business as the worlds prison. They would do very well.

[–]bdlcalichef 9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago (10 children) | Copy Link

Saudi Arabia isn’t exactly known as a paragon of justice

[–]Tbitw55 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (9 children) | Copy Link

Justice here is an eye for an eye I'd argue that's fairer than most justice systems

[–]bdlcalichef 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link

More like an eye for not believing in Santa Claus. Any country that kills people over a drawing can’t be considered just by any rational person. Also slavery and child rape isn’t exactly justice

[–]Tbitw55 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

Which drawings exactly? I'll need to go to school in a bit so I'll reply later

[–]bdlcalichef 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link

It doesn’t really matter. The fact that my comment would have me in hand cuffs and tortured in Saudi Arabia but is my pure, inalienable right here in America says enough. America isn’t a perfect example of a just society but compared to Saudi Arabia which adheres to Sharia Law I think it’s rich for you to denigrate our justice system in comparison.

We may not hit the nail on the head every time and there are flaws but they’re not built into the system the same way they are in any secular country. Here you’re guaranteed the same rights under the law whether you’re gay, female, Jewish, Muslim, black, whatever. It doesn’t always shake out that way, but it’s supposed to.

I’m guessing a gay, Jewish woman is gonna get a considerably better shot at justice in America than what they would get in Saudi Arabia,

[–]Tbitw55 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link

Well then your drawing point is out of here.

I agree how Saudi Arabia's government can't take constructive criticism.

Here the justice system doesn't discriminate race but gay people are abnormal in our view.

I'm sure r/pussypassdenied would argue that women in America DON'T get the same punishment for the same crimes.

How do you expect us to treat Jews after what they did in Palestine?

[–]micklememes 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Women are less dangerous than men. Full. Stop. I'm sorry biology is too much for your tender feels to handle. Men won the genetic lottery when it came to strength and lost the lottery when it came to being more dangerous. Boohoo. Boohoo. By your reasoning, we should make every father pass an orange through his dick each time a woman gives birth to his child. Probably because it's not a murder technically. It's manslaughter. 10K still sounds low tho.

Either way Im not a lawyer, what do I know lol.

How the fuck is this not murder

[–]Famous_Profile 13 points14 points15 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

It is murder only if it is intentional. Otherwise it it manslaughter. Motive is important,

That's just how law works.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Well it was charged at second degree murder, so...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Waiiit.

2nd degree murder and killing without a motive, with the killer having full understanding of their actions, Manslaughter involves a circumstance that may cause a reasonable person to become emotionally disturbed or considered as a murder fueled by passion or impulse.

I remember watching a cop turned YouTuber talk about how he (or someone he knew) went to a call of a truck running over a baby and then to a call about a middle aged white woman screaming at him for kids making too much noise playing basketball in the daytime.

I'm honestly suprised that there arent more cases of police suicide and shit (tbf I never looked either)

Got a lot of respect for them having to deal with the worst of people at their worst moments. Afterall they usually only arrive after something bad has gone down.

[–]Raunchy_Potato 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link

If you have no money there is no way you can pay 1000$ or even get a loan to do so with no collateral.

If a man can't pay his $1,000 a month child support, he has his wages garnished and risks being sent to prison.

If a woman can't pay her $1,000 bond for beating a child to death, she gets it reduced.

This is why I don't give a shit about women's problems.

[–]FalseRip9 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You really should go and look at how many kids were beaten to death by men versus women. If you aren't just some emo 13 year old being edgy, you'll reflect on that and make better life choices. And go thank your Mom for letting you turn into such a useless whiny child. If life were really as unfair as you pretend it is for men, you wouldn't have the luxury to complain, you'd have to go get a job.

Why isn't this fucking cunt getting the death penalty?

I don't agree with it always, and I know it's expensive, but goddamn... Some pieces of shit deserve it.

If we lived in a world where we could detect the truth of a matter with 100% accuracy I'd love to have a clause in the death penalty that says scum like this get dragged out back of the court house and get two to the back of the head.

I WISH it were morally acceptable to take people like this, murderers of children, rapists of children, mass murderers like Holmes, and just execute them. They don't deserve the air the rest of us breathe.

They're very fortunate we're a civilized society with laws that protect even scumbags rights.
