Just checked, and #womenaretrash was also banned, so they don't have that particular leg to stand on.

The news on this subreddit is so depressing that I thought the title would be sarcastic until I saw the picture

Same. Before a picture loaded I thought I'd see another example of misandry socially accepted.

[–]GreeceZeus 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I actually don't think they actively do something. Many posts containing this hashtag are being reported which tells their algorithm that it's bad.

[–]EloquentBarbarian 2 points3 points4 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
It seems the people using this hashtag have yet to figure out how to elevate themselves without stepping on someone else. Ironically, which is what they're trying to fight against, especially when they're the ones being stepped on.
[–]cyber-jar 11 points12 points13 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
This is very old, I remember it being talked about quite a few months ago and the feminist community was up in arms about pandering to privileged men using false oppression claims is actually allowing them to enhance our male-centric society and push feminists back. Hundreds of people were literally exclaiming that it is sexist to ban sexism against men, because we are the oppressors. My brain hurt for days, but it seems they moved on.

I'm conflicted. While it's a good thing to even the playing feild, its also a blow against free speech. If men wanna talk shit about women, and women wanna talk shit about men, they should be able to. As long as no one is advocating violence, it should be allowed.
[–]fuyukihana 21 points22 points23 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
I think unfortunately the reason they had to do this was that it was being used in association with advocating violence. I doubt that the threats of violence were that specific or sincere, but it still crossed the necessary line.
[–]3commentkarma 5 points6 points7 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Also, would it ever be socially acceptable for a man to say “women are trash” publicly anyway? Not that I want to, just another double standard.
[–]jonnytechno 50 points51 points52 points 6 years ago* (14 children) | Copy Link
Sometimes you need to fight fire with fire, like the gender rights imbalance being highlighted by men identifying as women, 8t highlights the bias and absurdity of its acceptance.... Whereas the reality of what would have normally happened is that the male subs would at best be reported and subsequently chastised or banned & at worst prosecuted fur crimes of mysoginy & the female subs would at most be given the right to privacy and this is evidence of that in operation
[–]NohoTwoPointOh 35 points36 points37 points 6 years ago (7 children) | Copy Link
THIS. Use their own tools against them so they see how ridiculous those tools are in the first place.
[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points-1 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

[–]NohoTwoPointOh 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Funny. We're seeing the exact same tactics work with things like Title IX.
You have to understand what the goal is. The WAR is creating change. However, the day-to-day battle is slowing, stopping and even reversing the radical shift of the Overton Window. The radfems and SJW's have been moving this at breakneck speed. They use tools like censorship and (more importantly) language to achieve this shift. As we can plainly see, they have been successful.
Looking at the Dave Chappelle/Sticks and Stones fiasco, we see a number of things:
We haven't been taking the fight to the enemy on their own ground before. How has that been working out for us? Don't get me wrong. Besides the fire-with-fire, there are other tactics to fight this war. They should be employed. But right now, the war of public opinion is the most crucial. The sheer absurdity of what they are doing must be exposed for all to see. And one of the best ways to point out absurdity is with absurdity.
[+]steviegoggles -14 points-13 points-12 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
Or, just actually organize to effect a change that doesn't restrict rights?
Like by not being a slacktivist?
[–]NohoTwoPointOh 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
Let us not confuse 'rights' with 'actions on a private platform'.
[–]steviegoggles 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
Let us not conflate what should be a right with legal technicalities because it suits our agenda.
[–]NohoTwoPointOh 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
So wait. If you create a private platform like steviegoggles.cool, you're saying that anyone has the "RIGHT" to say whatever? The word "right" is key here because rights are granted and in this case almost inherent.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Even when they're CLEARLY not restricting rights, it's assumed there's malicious, sexist intent behind it anyway.

We don't have freedom of speech to say what we want, where we want, and to who we want. We have the freedom to voice any opinion or belief we may hold free of government interference.
The distinction here is that no private outlet can be bound or even expected to give everyone the same platform. It is well within the rights of Instagram, YouTube, and Reddit to remove users, groups, or tags which they don't want on the platform. This includes removing #menaretrash, just as much as it includes neonazis or pedophiles. The result is that they find another platform to gather on, such as 4chan or Twitter.
If it were genuinely a freedom of speech issue, all of the above would be facing government-induced penalties for their thoughtcrimes. Maybe a fee for saying men are trash and mandatory rehabilitation for the pedos, or maybe they just throw us all in the same pit like in North Korea, China, and Airstrip One.
[–][deleted] -4 points-3 points-2 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Refer to my above reply in the same comment.
[–]Istalriblaka 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
You're wrong. He never mentioned the government; free speech is a concept that can apply to anything.
Free apeech can be applied to anything, sure. But outside of government institutions, it's up to the discretion of the platform. We're only guaranteed the ability to express our beliefs and thoughts. We are not guaranterd a privately funded platform, an audience, immunity from people disagreeing with us, or even the freedom to truly say anything - threats, for example, are considered crimes because they infringe on other people's rights to safety.
I feel like I'm repeating myself at this point, but the only guarantee you have from the first amendment is that you can hold and express any opinion you want without being fined, jailed, or otherwise executed. You are not guaranteed anything further or anything concerning privately-owned platforms.
Tl;dr: Freedom of speech is freedom to say what you want, not freedom to force others to share what you're saying.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
You're overthinking this. Everyone knows what free speech means in an American, governmental context, but this isn't what we're talking about
[–]Istalriblaka 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
While it's a good thing to even the playing feild, its also a blow against free speech.
That is literally from the top-level comment. If we're not discussing free speech, please inform me what we are talking about.
[–]alx429 14 points15 points16 points 6 years ago (6 children) | Copy Link
I think we all really need to understand what free speech means. It doesn’t mean companies can not discriminate against you based on what you say. It only means you can’t be arrested by the government for what you say. IG policing content on its site has nothing to do with free speech. If anything this is an instance of censorship. And a smart one, because we should always be curtailing hateful rhetoric directed at a group of people based off of the way they were born.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
[–]alx429 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
Who? The guy I replied to? That’s the point. Free speech is only a protected right in terms of how it applies to the government.
[–][deleted] 6 points7 points8 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
But he's talking about free speech in an everyday sense; as in, being able to express your thoughts whenever you want.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
These platforms are communities where we as users report content that we don't want to see, so this type of "cencorship" is not preventing these people from shouting their hate speech from their rooftops, it's just turning them around so they're yelling at a wall.
People have a right to say whatever they want, and we have a right to not want to hear it.
[–]alx429 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Ok, but even then it’s still wrong. You can freely express yourself however you want, but once you start getting commercial platforms and companies involved things change as your rights can’t infringe upon theirs.
[–]Referpotter 7 points8 points9 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
Exactly we don't want to turn feminists blocking everything.
[–]speakingofsegues 9 points10 points11 points 6 years ago (8 children) | Copy Link
There's a difference between free speech and hate speech, though, and just like racism and sexism, the definition has to be applied evenly. These things can't be a one-way street. When we're talking about ideologies, we can't pretend like one group of people can only be victims - never perpetrators - of it.
If it would be considered hate speech to have a #womenaretrash hashtag (and I'd bet it would be), then it has to be considered the same for the #menaretrash tag, too.
[–]gprime3 points 6 years ago [recovered] (1 child) | Copy Link
There's a difference between free speech and hate speech, though
No there isn't. This very European sentiment, aside from being at odds with US law, is at odds with the very definition of free speech. Freedom of speech is never needed to protect bland and uncontroversial speech, but the more outrageous ideas, including "hate speech." Of course the problem with "hate speech" is that there is no real objective definition. If, for example, I state negative truths about Islam, have I engaged in hate speech? Certain HRCs in Canada certainly believe so, but it doesn't seem obvious to me that saying "Mohammad married a girl as young as six, and because Islam regards him as the example to which other men should aspire, the religion encourages pedophilia, as evidenced by the contemporary law of countries like KSA and Iran" qualifies as hate speech.
[–]speakingofsegues 0 points1 point2 points 6 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
I was speaking from the perspective of why the #menaretrash hashtag would rightly be seen as the same as #womenaretrash since the latter would arguably be seen as such.
I'm also in Canada and we definitely have hate speech laws, which is a complicated and sticky subject that I'm more uncomfortable with than comfortable.
But I agree that it's all subjective.
[+]similarsituation123 -6 points-5 points-4 points 6 years ago (5 children) | Copy Link
Hate speech is not a legally recognized thing, because it is subjective.
Hate speech is not real.
[–]speakingofsegues 3 points4 points5 points 6 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link
It is here in Canada, and in other countries.
[–]similarsituation123 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link
And that is a horrible law. It criminalizes subjective feelings rather than concrete actions. Hate speech laws are utterly immoral in my opinion. I despise the hate speech itself, but to outlaw it is sickening. I happily served my country to protect ALL citizens and the rights of each and every one of them, regardless of the hatred in their hearts and minds. Because THAT is what true freedom is. If you can't give a right to speak to the worst of speech, it is only a matter of time before the right to speak on "basic" speech is criminalized. It just takes the right person in office.
[–]speakingofsegues 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link
And I agree - I don't think our hate speech laws are a great thing; not because of how they're applied to obvious infractions, but because of how they can be interpreted in order to be applied to way murkier and more subjective, debatable situations.
[–]similarsituation123 1 point2 points3 points 6 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link
That is one of my biggest concerns with hate speech laws. I always point at the UK as to what is a huge expansive abuse of those kinds of laws. Literally NO-ONE being offended over a video seen by 3 million people can have you facing a year in jail! Or simply POSTING rap lyrics that have the word nigger in them is enough to get one convicted. Or posting mean things on twitter, not threats, just mean things or offensive things.
It sounds funny in some cases (like with Count Dankula & how he's turned around from it sort of), but its downright fucking scary. There is already enough lines drawn to make the push a little further not that hard to become state controlled speech in places like the UK.
So I will happily take my downvotes on my original comment or any comment, because I want people to know the realities with things like this. Even accepting the term/idea of hate speech as a factual thing is the beginnings of it making its way into law.
TY for the reply. Always like a good discussion.

I'm conflicted. While it's a good thing to even the playing feild, its also a blow against free speech. If men wanna talk shit about women, and women wanna talk shit about men, they should be able to.
But they aren't, though. In fact, men aren't allowed to have spaces for themselves to discuss things, support each other and even engage in their favorite hobbies without some feminist screaming "MISOGYNY!" while women are praised for doing their own thing away from men.

Private company can do whatever it want's since the 1st only protects you from the government. I don't see censorship as a victory. We didn't change any attitude there. Those hysterical feminists probably feel even more emboldened now, since they think they've been silenced by the patriarchy.
Deplatforming, banning and censorship are tools feminists love to use against us. We're men, we are better. We shouldn't deploy the same toxic strategies.

Okay, y'all are going to downvote me for this, but hear me out first. Cancel culture needs to stop, and that includes on this side of the aisle.
Like any group that gets silenced, these people don't just disappear. They just find a new platform. You can see that same pattern with white supremacists getting kicked off of Twitter. It doesn't deradicalize them. If anything, it makes them feel persecuted, which justifies their anger, and makes them even more angry. That's how you get violent extremists.
Do you think the women and men posting on this hashtag suddenly realized the error of their ways? No. They likely just see it as more overreach by the mythical patriarchy, and will just be even more zealous about spreading what they believe.
Sunlight is the best disinfectant. We need these people to be visible so that we can combat their ideas. Pushing them into the shadows just makes it harder to disagree with them, because we no longer see their posts and they no longer see ours. And everyone here will be fine with that right up until these types of ideas radicalize someone who otherwise might have been saved, and they start assaulting or murdering people.
We have to tolerate bigotry to get rid of it. Intolerance just breeds more intolerance.
Okay, now downvote me into oblivion..
