Anyways, men are constantly told by feminists that we need to open up more. When we do, we're shut down by others, especially women. Then we're told to go therapy. I've been to several therapists. Almost all women, all feminist or at least feminist-leaning. I want a male therapist because I can open up more with another guy who may relate to my issues. With female therapists they just don't understand or sometimes even act against you if you're having issues with a woman. But male therapists are incredibly rare, especially finding one in a small town who takes your insurance. I originally went to therapy for two things, help with my FtM transition and help with unpacking my neglectful/abusive mother.

The first therapist was a complete disaster, she advertised herself as an "LGBT" friendly but knew nothing about the basics of trans issues (asking if I'm taking estrogen, actively talking about and misgendering her other trans patients, that kind of shit). And she often defended my mother. She said I should try to reconnect and "make it up to her". "All mothers love their children and sometimes they get overwhelmed and do hurtful things." Yeah, no. The second and third therapists were okay. I only went to them to talk about my mother, nothing gender/trans related (the same for all my other therapists). They seemed in over their heads because they didn't offer any advice or help, just nodded and basically told me "that sucks, man." The next few therapists were similar to the first one, most encouraging me to reconnect with my no-contact mother. And if they didn't want me to reconnect with her, they still sympathized her and said shit like "she was probably trying her best to parent", "she also grew up in an abusive environment, it's not completely her fault", "I'm sure she still loves you." Even after tell them she was literally mentally unstable (like slash your ties and accuse you of SA unstable).

Just to give you a taste of my mother's wonderful personality, she one time hid naked, or at least risque, pictures of herself in my bookshelf and "found" them while digging through my room. I didn't get to see them, but according to my little brother who did (yes, she showed her young teenage son those pictures) they were grainy, black and white pictures that were printed off on paper and sloppily cut out. She tried accusing me of lusting after her. I have a strong stomach and that made me almost throw up. Even if she wasn't my LITERAL MOTHER, she's horribly hideous and disgusting (inside and out). Now that you know just that one thing, would you still suggest that I "reconnect" with that psycho?

I truly think that if it was my father who was abusive, my therapists would never suggest reconnecting with him. But because my mother is a woman, she must be misunderstood. She's a mother, mothers could never intentionally hurt their children, right? I'm so sick of it. And I know I can't be the only one. I've given up on therapy, it got me nowhere. And in some cases it left me feeling worse. I've given up on therapy, I just vent online now.

What are your experiences with therapy? Has anyone had a positive experience with therapy?
