Why do women complain about marketing to "the male gaze"?

Um, it’s called supply and demand? People have tried selling sex to women. Women didn’t buy it. Even among the few women who are willing to spend money on these things, most of them (regardless of their orientation) would rather look at other women.

Anyone who says this has forgotten about romance novels. They're the biggest genre of fiction and absolutely contain smut.

Women act like our bodies are disgusting, and they don’t want to see them.

This also fails in the face of reality. Women do want to see good looking men, just look at boy bands or k-pop. Plenty of women thirst over the guys there.

The issue is the double standard demonizing male sexuality while viewing female sexuality as empowering. The root cause is likely feminists working to destroy male focused spaces.

O they ARE buying it! But it's less obvious it's sex (think 50 shades of grey, sex in the city, ...)

But since I haven't seen much commercials aimed at woman, I can't tell if they are using that in their marketing.

Why do you think they never talk about a "female gaze"? (and insist that "it's not the same" whenever it's brought up?)

Because they want to control men and react with intense jealousy at anything that they perceive as more attractive then them/takes male attention away from them.

Not all women are like this of course, but the ones that do think like that are extremely annoying to fandoms everywhere.

Women in the West have it so easy that demand for oppression is much greater than supply. So they need to manufacture it to become victims. One reason they want to be victims is that victims struggle and when we struggle is when we truly feel alive. Another reason is that victimhood comes with entitlement. Normally you must earn things. But when you are a victim then people just give them to you because you are a victim. "The male gaze" is one of these Princess and The Pea Oppression cases.

i was watching a video about the female gaze and it just seemed to be the typical men=bad women=good thing, basically it said that the male gaze was about bodies and physical experience "about being watched" and the female gaze was about feelings, subtext and understanding "about being understood".

but on practice, the examples were attractive men filling masculine roles but with different lighting and camera angles and women on different shots or giving monologues, i think this plays off in the demonization of male sexuality and the factoid that female sexuality is much more deep and caring.

if any of you guys have sources on this i would appreciate it, but i think this is just a concept that panders to women, this time about media.

Most complaints I’ve heard are about the male gaze in places they don’t feel it belongs, such as very sexualized advertisements or in serious movies, not in erotic material.

It is supply and demand. Most consumer spending is done by women (despite the fact they overall earn less) so advertisers overall market more to women, a reason why men are often portrayed negatively in commercials. Of course there are some things men consume more and there are several examples of marketing campaigns flopping by turning off their predominantly male audience.

For many decades, the leading genre of novels has been romance novels which are written for and marketed to a female audience.

In large parts people just fail to understand the very simple and basic market realities behind this.

By en large the target audience for sexualized female content is larger by virtue of the fact that way more men don't have access to sexual or romantic opportunities than men - hence selling the idea of it has more buyers there.

They do totally sell to women too, but the if you are a women, and you want romantic or sexual interest, it is easy to actually get the real thing - just check virtually any dating statistics of any app or dating data ever. So to pander to women you have to turn it up ten notches - hence Mr Gray is of course a super millionaire and everything else too, etc. ... "normal" sexualized content is still working for women - those Marvel stars don't take the shirts off for the male gaze, and again swipe stats on Tinder... women absolutely love sexualized/hot men, but in practice it is way harder to sell them the fantasy of something they have access in abundance to anyway.

They are not complaining about erotic materials but general advertising with half naked women.

Easy answer sex sells. Doesn’t mean it’s not annoying as a woman seeing advertising catering men. News flash life’s not fair. 🤷‍♀️It’s cruel to each sex in different ways.

They're not buying the visual stuff. Erotic novels are generally written by and marketed towards women. Porn and other sexualized things are generally marketed towards straight men because they have less of a chance at getting the real thing.

Every Time somebody says that ,I just say Diet Coke back at them. A 30 year campaign that was solely women , drooling and objectifying a shirtless ,sweaty man..Female gaze and nothing else of substance..
