Listen to AM Talk Radio or the Newscasters from the 80's, 90's. The general idea is that, higher pitched voices are more listened to, whereas lower pitched voices are not. Keep things variable. Rise and lower the intonation in words. Lower the volume of your voice, other times, increase the volume. Pause when needed after saying something controversial or if you want the audience to fill in the blank. Keep the audience guessing of what you're going to say next -- monotone is predictable and boring and dull. Do not sound like NPR. Repeat statements you want remembered, even catch phrases if needed. The more rhythmic, more melodic, the more dynamic, the more people will listen to you.

I kid you not, the most celebrated organic chem professor at my university (of 30,000) adopted Mark Levin's personality when lecturing, even down to lifting his catch phrases such as "Ladies and Gentlemen...". I do not agree with any of the politics, but man, it just works. On the flip side, Colin Cowherd is adopts all of techniques of Conservative Talk Radio, and uses it to broadcast his NFL opinions with a strong left bias.

More so, it's important how superfluous the verbal speech can be. Do not be concise. Be verbose.

My family destroys my voice everytime I see them. They are all screaming at and over each other non-stop. The only way to talk to them is to talk loud and fast, and that has carried over to the rest of my life. Not to mention that it is impossible to frame a conversation with my father; he demands to dominate the tempo and context of every family conversation; our conversations end up feeling like a political debate.

I try now to speak in a deeper, more concise, and paced voice... But its so easy to fall back into bad habits. Especially when I visit family for the holidays. I always leave feeling like I did when I was a teenager: breathing from my upper chest, my opinions marginalized.

Why should we change so much? If she doesn't like how your voice is, you shouldn't bother in the first place.
