This happened years ago in a old gym that I used to go to. At the time I was having a bout of depression and been put on medications by my Doctor.

I was using one of the mountain climber machines which there were only two of as part of my routine. On the other machine, there was really fit athletic blonde lady.

Generally when I was at the gym, I liked to just keep to myself and just do my own thing. I finish my routine and got off the machine and walked over to refill my water bottle.

The lady still on the machine next to me, takes her earphones out and grabs my attention. She says "Hey".

At first I thought she was going to ask for a favor, like maybe she dropped something, so I just look up in acknowledgement without saying anything.

She then says enthusiastically "I've noticed you around. You look like you've lost a lot of weight. You should be really proud of yourself!".

It felt weird coming from a complete stranger and so I just said "Ugh....thanks?".

Then I just walked away and carried on about my business at the gym.

In hindsight I think I did handle that a bit badly. As I mentioned I was having depression and put on medications at the time.

Could there have been a better way to have handled situations like that?
