Yes it’s absolutely discrimination, as is any rule about no beards (except of course when it involves requiring a seal on a mask like firefighters). Anywhere women are allowed long hair, men should be as well.

In many of those fields hair represents a health, defensive, or cohesion issue.

It’s not discrimination. Not buzz cutting women is discrimination.

You're asking whether it's discriminatory to police what men can or can't wear, what styles they can choose for their hair, etc.?

The answer is simple: If we were to tell women the same (e.g. "you can't wear that at work", or "you can't have that hairstyle at work") then would it be discrimination? If so then it's discrimination to do it to men.

I was in the military, actually I still had this account when I enlisted, im that old.

Anyways, I don't always think its discrimination, but rather practicality: Back in the day it was seen as shameful to enlist and not be able to grow a beard, and that mentality stuck around until WWI: with the introduction to mustard gas and gas masks. People still wanted to grow their beards so they just put their masks with their beards only to inhale that very gas because the beard wasn't letting the gas mask fully seal your face.

When I tried applying to be in deli worker at a publix a decade and a half ago, I was told that I can to shave for sanitary reasons but if I didnt, they just put a hairnet over my face. I would've complained but they made a woman with hair on her face as a medical condition wear a hairnet on her face so I mean it seems fair, abit embarassing but fair.

I wouldn't die fighting on that hill personally especially when its men that advocate and enforce the hairless laws as every one of my exes complained EVERY TIME I SHAVED OR CUT MY HAIR!

I work in the automotive industry, we work around moving parts all the time, it's a safety thing, a general rule of thumb is putting your hair into a tight bun or shaving it close to your head, which applies to both sexes

If men in the military have to have short hair for practical reasons, then women should too.

Genuine question, can military men in non-combat roles wear their hair how they want to, or do they need to have the same cut that soldiers do?

My two-year-old son has glorious curly locks, but here in Mexico, I think he'll be forced to cut his hair when he goes to school. I can see a reason for short hair in the military, but not for school. I wonder, do they also punish girls to cut their hair short, or is it only boys were forced to have gender conforming hairstyles?

Absolutely, it is also ethnic and cultural discrimination because in many cultures worldwide men grow their hair out long such as in most indigenous American groups. It imposes White European American cultural grooming standards on all males regardless of their ethnic/cultural background in a country that brags about being a "melting pot" of cultures, ethnicites, and races which it certainly is not.

Anyone remember the movie G.I. Jane? If I saw it, it was a long time ago. IIRC Jane (Demi Moore) was given the exemption, but cut off all her hair anyway since she didn't want to train any less hard than the men. I don't know how true to life this is, but it does make me wonder whether women themselves are happy with exemptions in the military.

It absolutely is, and there's no sound argument that it isn't. Women can even use crap like lipstick and colored nail polish in uniform while men can't. How the hell is that supposed to enhance combat readiness or quality of life? It isn't. It's just a gimme that they gave to women so they could recruit more women to the military.

To a point yes but to other points it’s reasonable. For example my parents kept my hair short when I was young and still pressure me to do so in my 30’s, problem is I have great hair and look better with quite a bit of it. I’m aware that it may fall out in my 40’s / 50’s so I’ll be damned if I don’t enjoy it while I can. But their generation just “knows” incorrectly that every male must have short hair for some reason.

In the setting of combat or high risk mechanical work short hair makes sense.

There are def double standards but in the west long hair on a man is often looked down upon. Could be because of Christian influence though. Western society loves their Greco Roman standards too.

It's about professionalism, not discrimination.

A professional look on men and women is different. That's it.

Also, the standard is changing. People act like social and cultural change is some kind of instant thing. It isn't. In fact, historically speaking, the rate of change we've been seeing is unprecedented. It used to be that in order for society to change meaningfully, first the young people had to be convinced and then the old people had to die/not be in power anymore. Change would take decades

Professional standards are already adapting. Hair dye. Groomed beards, long hair on men. Tattoos. Piercings. All are becoming far more acceptable than they used to be even in the military

It's a safety and infection control thing.

I can only speak for healthcare situations, and the last thing I need when I'm trying to start an IV or place a Foley is long hair falling over my eyes, or worse, into my sterile field.

Female doctors and nurses at my facility have to keep their hair tied up at all times, and cannot have their fingernails done under any circumstances. I actually have it easier than them in this instance, because at least I as a guy can style my hair how I normally would every day so when I show up at 6am I don't completely look like I just rolled out of bed and clipped all my hair up. 🤷🏻
