jfc.... I used to not really have an opinion on circumcision I didn't really think it was that big a deal and I thought people were complaining about something that didn't really matter that much but holy. Thank you for putting this out in the open.

There's just one problem with your numbers.

You use the entire male children US population for your calculations. Unmutilated children do not die of their dicks being mutilated. I think it's one third of kids in the US who get mutilated? Meanin it should be roughly 54 times, not 18 times more likely.

The Royal Dutch Medical Association says,

Further, there is apparent evidence that circumcision offers protection against complaints such as HPV infection, urinary tract infections and penis cancer. However, these studies, too, are controversial.

38 European doctors in their response to the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) say,

Penile cancer is 1 of the rarest forms of cancer in the Western world (∼1 case in 100, 000 men per year), almost always occurring at a later age. When diagnosed early, the disease generally has a good survival rate. According to the AAP report, between 909 and 322,000 circumcisions are needed to prevent 1 case of penile cancer. Penile cancer is linked to infection with human papillomaviruses, which can be prevented without tissue loss through condom use and prophylactic vaccination. It is remarkable that incidence rates of penile cancer in the United States, where ∼75% of the non-Jewish, non-Muslim male population is circumcised, are similar to rates in northern Europe, where 10% of the male population is circumcised.

They go on to say,

As a preventive measure for penile cancer, circumcision also fails to meet the criteria for preventive medicine: the evidence is not strong; the disease is rare and has a good survival rate; there are less intrusive ways of preventing the disease; and there is no compelling reason to deny boys their legitimate right to make their own informed decision when they are old enough to do so.

In the past the American Cancer Society (ACS) has even begged the AAP to stop promoting the practice as a prevention for penile cancer. They said,

As a representative of the American Cancer Society, we would like to discourage the American Academy of Pediatrics from promoting routine circumcision as preventative measure for penile or cervical cancer. The American Cancer Society does not consider routine circumcision to be a valid or effect measure to prevent such cancers.

The ACS went on to say,

Likewise, research claiming a relationship between circumcision and penile cancer is inconclusive. Penile cancer is an extremely rare condition, effecting one in 200,000 men in the United States. Penile cancer rates in countries which do not practice circumcision are lower than those found in the United States. Fatalities caused by circumcision accidents may approximate the mortality rate from penile cancer.

So even the ACS echoed your point about deaths caused by the cutting. The claim that male genital mutilation prevents penile cancer is up there with the claim that vaccines cause autism.

My statistics is rusty so having trouble explaining but I feel like there is an amortization flaw in this calc. I feel like the large difference in the population divisors is throwing it.

Let's say that penis cancer only affected 60-80 yo men. Should you instead divide by the population of 60-80 yo men?

My gut is that 500 v 100/50%(circ rate) is a good estimate.

You, and many others, are misrepresenting my data. My 2010 study estimated that 117 boys died FOR THE YEAR I STUDIED. Not every year. The mortality rate I came up with is 0.9/10,000 births. It would be correct to say, "more than 100 per year." Sorry but this is wrong. The latest estimates are that only 10 boys die per year from circumcision in the USA.
