Female sex toys are often seen as a necessity as many women say most men can't get them there. So they're not meant to replace men as much as they're meant to "help". Sex toys marketed towards straight men are straight up made to replace women. Who needs to argue with the wife about why she won't blow you after you did all the chores, paid all the bills and bought her flowers when you can just pull out the old stroker or the anatomically correct doll. That's horrible! Guys should be able to use them without judgement. Women's self-pleasure has been very taboo also, and in some way still is, but I think that it got better due to a lot of women speaking out within the community, thus kind of starting a de-stigmatisation movement. I think speaking out and sharing your experiences really helps in spreading awareness. In short, you should totally be vocal about this taboo, because it deserves to be changed. Your pleasure shouldn't be frowned upon.

I wonder if its because a womans value is tied to chastity (so she isnt hooking up), so her value is in displaying character (resisting casual sex), and the mans value is in power (so his character seems weak for doing something as building demonstrating power) so him doing it is seem as weakness.

This is a headline, but is it real? We should look deeper!

I clicked the link, and it's a 'healthcare news' content site. It's not affiliated with an official health organization or academic research institution that I could tell. Looks like they're a content spot hoping for clicks using good SEO. Healthcare is a big advertiser online. Get your site's stats up enough, you can get some good $$ from your ads. Not 'bad', just not going to get my undying trust without some back-up. (I do like that they do cite their sources. Better than most!)

So where in the article does it say anything about research showing that men are seen as creeps for having sex toys. What's that from? Well, they and seem to be paraphrase the original source rather than fully quote. And there are no actual statistics involved (example: "72% of women on the street in Omaha, Nebraska said they felt...")

Later in the article, they do cite medical journals about sex toy usage, but it's not about stigma.

But what's the source of this opinion-based claim on a non-academic health 'news' site?

A 2015 YouTube video from Stuff Mom Never Told You by Cristen Conger. Is she citing statistics to back up the statement? Research? How about a poll from Instagram? Nope. She was inspired by a Reddit post from nearly a decade ago by an anonymous Reddit user asking why there's this stigma.

Later in the video, there is research about sex toy usage — not how anyone views men who use sex toys.

I'm sure that some of you have faced stigma interpersonally. I can't relate. I talk about sex for a living. Women tend to be overjoyed that I want to use sex toys in bed. But hey, I know my anecdotal experience does not mean that's 'how it is.' Just like how your experience doesn't mean that's how all of society is.

Also, society has advanced a lot in the sex space since 2015 — when the source of the headline of this article that only came from an anonymous reddit post was created. The sex toy industry has exploded for dicks. Roughly around 2015 was when Hot Octopuss came out with their 'guybrator' for frenulum-based orgasms. (I recommend.) Playboy released an entire line of male sex toys last year! And sex-positivity has grown and expanded — and includes Men. Was there more stigma in 2015 than today? I don't have research to tell you that, but I'd venture a fair guess that it has. A lot of sex-based stigmas have decreased. Nonmonogamy has higher acceptance rates than a decade ago. More people have tried a nonmonogamous relationship since a decade ago. More people know a sex worker than they [knew they] did a decade ago. It's a trend.

So, is there a stigma about men having sex toys? I don't know. The point is that someone posted almost 10 years ago that there is a stigma, and someone made a video furthering that point without citing any research, and then this week a non-academic 'news' site cites this old YouTube video as their only source for the existence of vast stigma against men who have sex toys.

Not for nothing, the article OP links to cites Everyday Feminism's post about the YouTube video. And IDK I didn't know that this sub was willing to listen to feminists but that's an interesting surprise! Oh, and EF's post + Conger's video both insist that it's not creepy for men to use sex toys. They're just saying 'society says'...without, you know....(I've made my point?)

Maybe — just maybe — we shouldn't see a random headline from a truly random website citing an old-ass non-research YouTube video and claim that feminists are telling the truth about male sex toy stigma (while wanting to disagree with everything else that they say). A more productive conversation would be to talk about how the sex toy industry is lagging behind male toy innovations — like super funny comedian Mike Cannon did when I was in college.

But that's an old-ass complaint too. Men have more sex toy options than ever before. And not one woman has found me weird for it. Then again, I live in Bushwick where everyone gets a butt plug when they sign their lease.
