Edit: apparently men can't lie about their vote - there's a recent post on a popular women's subreddit stating OP is "angry and devastated" her partner lied to her about intending to vote after she questioned him about it, and is now questioning their entire relationship if he was a manipulative and selfish person from the very beginning.

So I guess just break up with your partner immediately as soon as they broach the subject of politics? You'll still be assumed to be misogynistic and selfish but at least you won't have to be painted as an abuser when your partner demands to know information that should be privy between you and nobody else.

Before every election there are trending Google searches about whether someone can find out who you voted for. So it doesn't seem too out there to release ads reminding people that their votes are secret.

I've had the opposite. Men will respectfully disagree, maybe give you a bit of chaff or dialog. The women will berate you to no end if you disagree with their stance, call you vile names, and make heinous accusations against your character.

Whenever talking politics I'll give vague or non-committal answers, acting like I don't know anything.

Um, this is an accurate depiction. I have a female friend who has been with the same man for 7 years (don't ask me why). She is very leftist, but not liberal. He is very just flat-out conservative. They have had this conversation, and I quote, "If you vote for the liberal party, I will leave you and your children behind."

While it is fucked up this is directed for women, this happens to a lot of couples. Both sides.

Because a lot of women fairly fear being punched in the face by their husbands, particularly when Trump supporters have specifically used violence to solve political differences.

So it's more like: When you live with a supporter of political violence, you fear the violence at home.

I can understand how offensive this is to the VAST MAJORITY of men who are not trying to influence their wife's vote, or are themselves being pressured by women to vote a certain way.

Here is just one experience I had recently: I was canvassing in a liberal neighborhood and talking with a young woman, perhaps late 20's. I asked her if she planned to vote Democratic. She turned to the man behind her and he said, "No!" She turned back to me with a look that seemed to say, "I guess that's my answer."

The ad is aimed at women like her to remind them their vote is private.

It's not fair to generalize, but it does happen. And this is an unusual year with the huge gender divide on the issues. For many couples, it may be the first time they have had different opinions.

For guys whose friends are all aligned, it has to be an awkward position to vote differently and much easier to just do privately without admitting it, as in the men's ad.

Kudos to the VAST MAJORITY!
