Swiss senate votes to make gender discrimination punishable by law

From the existing Swiss Equality law as translated by Wikipedia:

“Employees must not be discriminated against on the basis of their sex, whether directly or indirectly, including on the basis of their marital status, their family situation or, in the case of female employees, of pregnancy.”

However, and importantly, it contains an escape clause allowing men to be discriminated against:

“Appropriate measures aimed at achieving true equality are not regarded as discriminatory”. (1)

So, in otherwise words, discrimination doesn’t count as discrimination if the goal is to elevate women, create parity, etc.

It reminds me of how Title IX in the states forbids gender discrimination, but court decisions have ruled that discrimination against men is often warranted on the grounds it combats the past oppression of women. Similarly, many policies of discrimination in the U.S. violate the non discrimination clause and f the 14th amendment.

The devil is in the details and even then much depends on how it’s enforced.

Switzerland has compulsory conscription for males only.

It also has a tax for males only who do not do military service.

As a Swiss guy, people here talking as if Switzerland is a feminist dictatorship is very funny to me.

The conservative right has been the most popular party for more than a decade, and the most fervent support of the military service are the men here.

In fact, the debate is more men saying women should also do it and women saying nobody should do it.

There are also quite a few women here who do it willingly as it can give a first professional experience in some areas, is paid, can give you certificates either in managements or more specific skill set like healthcare and is usually seen very well when on a CV.

And we have civil alternatives for people who just don't want to be involved with the military.
