I am in my forties and never in my long dating life have I received anything from a woman on Valentine’s Day. Valentine’s Day is mostly buy something for a woman day. How romantic.

Recently, was reminiscing, way back to my sexually active twenties.

Almost without exception, once you'd had sex with a woman, you now 'owed' her something. With a few of them, it was obvious that the indebtitude was intended to last for a lifetime of peonage.

The exception was the woman I got married to.

Only women I’ve interacted with today are my amazing mother who is very worried about the war in Ukraine today, and my great GF who loved the crackers and cheese with her morning coffee I got her.

Yeah, it's not right to demand something for Valentine's Day. And it cheapens the "gift" if you had to ask for it.

My husband and I usually go out to a nice dinner and he sends flowers, while I get him chocolates and a card. Rarely, one of us will buy a present for the other.

And, that's all delightful, but I can't imagine telling him he had to do any of those things, or vice versa. It's not a test of our relationship- it's just an enjoyable day.

The notion that "her presence in his life is gift enough" is fucking laughable. Its one thing in a dynamic where the man earns all the money and in exchange the woman does all the traditional "wife" duties obediently and happily. Then you can say her presence is enough. But lots of times now women want the man to be a traditional man and in exchange, when the woman wants sex it might be with him if he's lucky.

Thankfully my wife and I both see Valentine's day as a dumbass excuse to for companies to sell us bullshit. I made a pan of brownies yesterday, and we are going to have some friends over tonight for board games. That's as much celebrating that we are doing.

Although, my father in law left a note for us this morning that said "Happy V D!" not realizing what else that could stand for. We had a laugh.

I'm a woman and even I hate Valentine's day. It's gone Way beyond what it originally was. It started in the Victorian era and it has become way too commercialized much like Christmas. I would much rather someone just spend time with me eating snacks and watching movies then spending all that money on roses that are going to die in a week anyway.

Also, they seem very excited for this day to arrive, not because they get to spend time with their partner and enjoy their presence, but more likely because they are getting something from him.

^ Some people get ghosted and ignored by their partner for 20 hours on V's day.

Maybe she should feel a bit entitled to a nice fancy dinner and gifts after being treated like that on a special day.

Aww that’s sad. My husband got me a Kitchen Aid stand mixer and flowers while I got him a genuine leather messenger bag for work. We played DnD all night while eating frozen pizza and garlic bread. I hate the idea of going out to a fancy restaurant that’s overcrowded with other couples.

Too many unequal treatment

Considering women already have lots of privileges in a relationship.

They aren’t expected to be a provider but men are.

An average looking women can easily find another men , but average men can’t get another women that easily.

I don’t think it is healthy or sustainable if relationships between men and women is unequal and one side with higher expectations in relationship .

If Relationship bewteen men and women can’t be equal, and women place very high expectations on men , without themselves meet their own standards , unwilling to reflect themselves if there’s problems in relationships, blame men for lots of things and expect men to do lots of things , without thinking about their entitlement .

I hate Valentine’s Day. (Female). And it baffles me how women just expect. And hell mend you if you don’t do anything.

Why Valentine’s Day, when everyone else is doing it? Hardly special is it? The effort and gift are meaningless as the gifted has been told to do it, or is doing it out of fear of not doing it.

If you love your partner (applicable to both sexes) you don’t need a calendar day to be forced to show it. You’d want to show them. When YOU want to show them. How much more impactful would a gesture be on an unexpected day! It’s almost an insult to get something, knowing it’s been done out of societal pressure rather than a genuine desire to show your other half you love them. Yet women lap it up, brainwashed into thinking gift on Valentine’s Day = he loves me. I think for some it’s actually more important to have a show for others eg flowers delivered to work ‘ look everyone at my perfect partner and how thoughtful he is, I am must be so amazing’. If someone loves you, you feel it, you know, they show you, it’s not ‘in’ a gift. It’s not about keeping up appearances. Honestly today makes me angry and I don’t get angry. But wanted you guys to know, not all woman love or expect or even want something on V day.

If sex is being treated as a gift/reward, then there's no reason why men should feel obligated to try to help her enjoy it. This is presumably part of the slippery slope that leads to separation, but it starts with her attitude that sex is a reward for him.

I think it’s because other women mainly the material ones brag about it and make us feel like crap when our husbands don’t do anything. I actually love valentine’s day not just for my husband but for my kids. I don’t think of this holiday as what most people do. I will never forget getting a card from my oldest daughter saying how she was my valentine because I had her heart first. The way she wrote that card really made me think of Valentine’s day differently. But I get your point and I am glad to see a man’s view on this. I don’t expect my husband to get me anything but these bratty women make some of us non material women feel like crap. I was bullied throughout school as a child and growing up these type of women really piss me off. Maybe I am wrong and other people see it differently than I do. But I appreciate you sharing your view on this. I wish my husband would have shared how he felt about it. I am sure he feels this way also.

The "free love" movement didn't last because of the development of consequences as a result of removing restrictions, so I wonder how long the "female advantage" fad will last before consequences again impose restrictions. Many men are already annoyed with women feeling entitled to something on a commercially fabricated day whilst not reciprocating.

It seems like human society doesn't consider the possible consequences of their actions and so throws caution to the winds and is then beaten back by undesirable outcomes: unrestrained use of antibiotics for things they aren't useful for, allowing drug resistance to develop; women being overly selective ignoring the consequence of not only depriving greater numbers of men the opportunity to express their sex drive, but to develop relationships with an equal number of women, leading to large numbers of lonely men and women; women taking up employment positions because of quotas and not competence, leading to worse outcomes for productivity and more unemployed without even the possibility of becoming live at home Mothers instead as a fallback; etc.
