I came to the realization that my wife is suffers from mental illness. I always suspected something was not right but after each child birth it kept on getting worse and it had become unbearable with perimenopause. She refuses to seek help so the condition goes undiagnosed and untreated.

I worry about the toxic environment for our kids but I don’t have enough of a case for full custody. My wife undiagnosed and I’d have to have my kids testify against their mother to make a case. I don’t want to do that.

Like I mentioned in the headline, we’ve been married 18 years and have three kids (15, 12, 10). One of the issues with her mental illness is impulsive control and she had racked up a significant amount of credit card debt on top of our student loans. I recently found several credit cards in her name that she hid from me.

I’m the primary earner making $160k per year and my wife makes $60k. We have $70k in student loans and around $40k in credit card debt. I have minimal amount saved up in retirement savings since I took early withdrawal several times throughout our marriage to pay down our debt. We have about 20% equity in our $300k house. Our cars are paid for.

Have any of you initiated a divorce and what can I expect? I figure I will have between $4k and $5k a month in CS/SS. How will all our debt be handled.

I appreciate your thoughts on my situation.
