I've had a hard time making sure I focus on my part of the divorce. Me and my ex had notable issues but I can't really do anything about her side of the street, can only clean up mine to prevent making the same mistakes again.

I know during my former relationship and marriage I was overly focused on keeping her calm and appeasing her. I had major issues with people pleasing and she was the main person I wanted to please. This made me a bit of a doormat that never really took initiative and put a lot of pressure on her to guide the relationship.

I thought I was being a good bf/husband because I tried to never raise any fights, was always focused on trying to help her life and not put pressure on her and in the end it led to resentment and a tremendous degree of burnout. I was reliving my childhood trauama of trying to keep the house calm. It felt familiar and comfortable. I was also so afraid of losing her I tried to cover up any bad parts of my personality instead living as myself and not tolerating having my requests and bids for attention ignored.

I know going forward I'll survive a divorce and I don't need a partner to be happy anymore. I'm happy by myself. I'm working on making sure i'm always authentic and true to myself instead of acting like someone else to make someone interested or happy with me. I hope this translates into a more sturdy personality and better character. This will hopefully lead to more happiness but either way, at least I can be proud of myself going forward instead of living in an ever shrinking box to try to manipualte/regulate someone else's emotions.

What are you working on to improve in yourself for the future?
