i just started eating salads (im a dude btw), so the one rule i stick to is bacon and meat: chicken, steak, etc. Those are the things thatll encourage me to eat salads. I get my protein fix AND veggie supplement

Kale, dried cranberry, sliced almonds, squeeze half an orange into it, grilled chicken and lemon juice.
Spinach, baked bacon, broccoli slaw, blueberries, and apple slices.

oh wow those sound delicious. How do you make the broccoli slaw?

Got one that Americans don't seem to know about :) (just in my experience).

Cut up tomatoes, cucumber and onion, add salt and a ton of sourcream (you can use olive oil, but I think it increases the amount of calories).

i'm a fan of greek salad and anything with kale and sweet peppers

[–]ashglass 0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Spinach, dried cranberries, walnuts, baby tomatoes, carrots, a little shredded cheese, some pepper, and a splash of vinaigrette. (Homemade if possible.) I always opt for spinach instead of lettuce, because it's healthier. Adding healthy fats to your salad such as nuts and cheese can help you absorb the nutrients in the veggies better. :)

Not a salad, but another healthy suggestion is making homemade smoothies, with berries, ice, different types of fruits and some milk. I also add spinach and shredded carrots to add some extra nutrients. :) They're yummy and good for you too!

try a lil balsamic vinegar and olive oil, favorite dressing. and kalamata olives are a quick add that's filling.

My favorite salad is baby spinach, bacon bits (real ones, not the soy crumble things), pecan pieces, dried cranberries, some shredded cheese, with raspberry vinaigrette. It's making me hungry just thinking about it.

I second the smoothie thing too. I but frozen fruit so I don't have to use ice and water it down, and use almond milk or coconut water. Whatever frozen fruit I feel like, sometimes some protein powder, and blend a bunch of spinach in there. Delightful and an easy way to get your fruit and veggie servings.

Baby salad greens, thinly sliced red onion, peppers, shredded carrot, cucumber slices, sunflower seeds, sliced apple; mixed with cottage cheese, balsamic vinaigrette, and a splash of apple cider vinegar. So good.

Have fun experimenting =)

my favourite is: rocket and spinach as leaves, a layer of cucumber, spring onions, radish chopped up small, and apple slices. I make a lemon & olive oil dressing for that with lots of pepper in, and for protein add chicken or proper ham for the Mr, and for me nuts or lentils.

Lots of good suggestions here. One thing I like to add that I haven't seen yet are roasted beets.

[–]sugarcrushEndorsed Contributor0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Greek salad: romaine lettuce, cucumber, Roma tomatoes, peppercinis, red onion, top with feta

Roasted pear salad: slice a pair and broil for 5 minutes. Layer spinach, the pear, dried cranberries, top with Gorgonzola and walnuts, use balsamic vinaigrette

Feeling lazy? Mixed greens, olive oil, salt, pepper, a dash of lemon juice makes for a great side.

Greek style: sliced cucumbers, sliced tomatoes, olive oil, salt, pepper, cilantro

Feeling fancy? Arugula, sliced radishes, salt, pepper, olive oil, dressing=dijon mustard+lemon juice. This is crack.

Arugula, sliced cherry tomatoes, diced/sliced chicken, mozzarella cheese (real and sliced, not that grated store bought stuff), salt/pepper/lemon/olive oil/to taste

Arugula, sliced steak, olive oil/salt/pepper, garlic, shallots, rosemary, balsamic vinegar. Fixation with arugula continues.

This isn't a salad, but I love to stir fry mixed greens and scramble it with my eggs.

i love your suggestions because they don't involve spinach or bacon bits. i know spinach is super healthy but i just can't stand it :/

the scrambled eggs with mixed greens sound interesting!

[–]throwaway_redpill20 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

:) I have trouble with raw spinach as well. It's much tastier fried (with small amounts of butter), and I like to think the health benefits of spinach outweighs the unhealthiness of the butter!

[–]swift-heart1 point2 points3 points 12 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

actually i've gotten food poisoning from eating cooked spinach and ever since then i've been avoiding it. maybe try making yours with coconut oil instead of butter to make it healthier?

[–]throwaway_redpill20 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Ah! Well then, I guess you're out of luck. Beets give me hives, so I never eat them. After all, it's not like every healthy food is mandatory, right? It's just the overall picture.

And thanks for the suggestion!

I love all kinds of salads....but a few years ago I started dipping my fork in the dressing and then the salad. Too much dressing was ruining the taste of the veges. I think I like cucumbers the best.

[–]shitlordlucy0 points1 point2 points 12 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I make my "dressing" out of just olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Most salads aren't even healthy because people go crazy with the creamy/artificial dressings, many have sugar in them. Homemade dressing is the way to go- or no dressing, and mix it up with caremalized onions and other flavor enhancers. I personally am not trying to lose weight so that's why I do the olive oil.

Spinach > Lettuce

Also, I really enjoy having salads that are just an assortment of raw fruits and veggies on a plate. It takes a long time to eat and is really filling. The perfect thing for when you want to watch TV and just munch on something without worrying about eating too many calories.

I may be late to the party here, but I just discovered Vom Fass. I got a sample pack with 3 oils and 3 vinegars, and LOVE mixing them over my salad ingredients. So yummy and legitimately healthier than all the chemicals in regular store bought salad dressing!! If you go to the store, they let you taste them and try different combos!

[–]ejtnjin1 point 12 years ago [recovered] | Copy Link

Make your own dressing from two parts olive oil and one part lemon juice with some sea salt and freshly ground pepper. If you want to get creative you can add honey, mustard, dill, or other (preferably fresh) spices to the mix.

I like to use this dressing on chunks of avocado, tomato, and cucumber. It's nice to have a lettuce free salad some times. If you add some feta to the mix it becomes heavenly.

A favorite of mine is slices of roasted beets with goat cheese and caramelized onions on an assortment of leafy greens. Yum.

Other good combinations are argula or spinach with small slices of cheddar, avocado, and carrots.

And of course olives. Olives make everything better. Any kind, it's nice to mix up the type of olive every now and then.
