I don't think social media is geared towards debate and discussions. It's mostly for validation and echo chambers. It's hard to remain thoughtful and empathetic when you're only a few lines of text on a screen. People don't behave online as they would face to face.

I think this is a really common thought process for a lot of people. I've noticed it with Brexit. Some pro-Remain commentators insist that those who voted Leave did it either because they didn't understand the information they were given, or that the information they were given was misleading.

They don't seem to be able to handle the idea that people got the same information but have drawn a different conclusion.

I wander over to other subs occasionally, and I've found that since BP people don't like the idea of RP, they really like to frame RP people as monsters. This is a good example of what I mean. He could not fathom that a woman would choose to follow a strong leader, and he kept insisting that I was "second", LOL! All of his comments on that post were trying to force RP to admit that they abused their "power" because he truly believes that if a man leads his marriage, that man will start beating his wife black and blue and hold her hostage against her will. People are weird!

Yeah. I've reached a rift in my relationship with many longtime friends because I won't jump on their train. We're still friends, and we still manage but ...it's the elephant in the room. They know that's what I'm leaving out when they ask me why I think their relationships fail, they know that's what I'm leaving out when they ask why they can't find a good man.

I'm hopeful eventually they'll get to a point where they realize that they're censoring the things they don't want to hear.

I feel excluded a lot from most communities because I'm not actually super feminine, either. I have rules I set for myself, and those don't mesh with a lot of other things. I'm ...weird, I guess. I'm really grateful I've met a few great women here that really make me feel good about things though while still being honest.

Facebook is a cesspool.

Depending on who you are friends with. After college and drifting from sorority sisters, I wasn't actually friends with I just started unfriending/unfollowing people. It's made facebook so much better. I have maybe 200 people on my friends list and it's mostly family, in-laws, cousins, etc. and the people I actually call a friend.

Yes, this is so true and I find many don't see how hypocritical they are being. I work in an office full of feminists and yet they quite frequently insult women they don't like, especially Republican women. Just the other day I overheard two co-workers (one man, one woman) calling another woman a cunt. Then they said they shouldn't call her that because it's an insult to cunts.

Prior to that, the one woman was getting offended when another male co-worker referred to his wife as "my [wife's name]" by saying, "didn't we just march against that" (referring to the women's march) and the man then apologizing and saying he hates to use those terms. She proceeded to say that's why she calls her boyfriend her "partner" because it implies equality. The other male co-worker also likes to preface statements about how he's a member of the patriarchy so he can't say X or that he has white male privilege, etc. But they don't see anything wrong with insulting other women!! It's mind-boggling!
