I think there are good secular reasons to not just blindly use hormonal birth control. It’s good to be educated about what it does to your body and the possible side effects. And it’s also good to understand how your body works, because it’s super awesome

Fertility awareness techniques (there are a number of them and they are often used concurrently—FAMs are NOT the just old “rhythm method.”) In fact, FAM has helped many women increase their fertility and figure out hormonal imbalances in their cycles, which in turn helped them conceive when they had trouble doing so. I have heard of gynos requiring patients to record their cycles (temps, cervix changes, mucous) for a few months, and longer if they are irregular.

I’m not a scientist, but I’m a curious person, and I find the information cycle tracking reveals to be fascinating (can help you anticipate mood swings, reactions to certain foods, etc). I intend to teach it to my girls so they can understand their bodies and reproductive system better.

Of course, people use it for traditional religious reasons. Many don’t, though, and use a condom during fertile days when trying to avoid conception, or just don’t PiV during the 4-5 day fertile window

ETA: psychologically, I wouldn’t have my marriage any other way; I’m extremely satisfied and content,( albeit we have normal every day difficulties), and I do contribute that more than a bit to our sex life and complete openness to each other. I’m not reserving a part of myself when we sleep together, and am literally completely vulnerable. I just saw the link at the top, and will watch it when I have a minute

I don't entirely disagree with him. I've come to realize rarely anyone talks about the detriments of contraception and many equate the invention of birth control to women's liberation. Just listing some medical side effects: birth control can cause raging mood swings, weight gain, ectopic pregnancy, PID, loss of libido, increase risk of clotting, and it decreases bone density. Socially, contraception catapulted casual sex and hookup culture because separates sex from the natural purpose of reproduction and makes it purely recreational. And that's not even my hot take on it.

Personally, I'm having my IUD removed soon and will be learning NFP. Learning more about your body and how it works is never a bad thing.

It gets a bad rep but my husband and I use Fertility awareness techniques and I have never gotten pregnant unintentionally. I told my obgyn about it and she tried to push an IUD on me because I was “guaranteed to screw up” so I stopped seeing her.

You have to be consistent and track changes everyday like basal body temp, tracking cycle days etc, so in that regard it can be more time consuming than taking a pill.

I actually use an app specific for natural family planning to help keep track. You will also need to be willing to have a protection method during your fertile days which can be up to 5 days before your ovulation day and the day after (and even plus a few extra days because not everyone is consistent in their cycles because have ranged from 26-30 days and I’ve been tracking for years).

The upside for me is I’m less moody, lost a little weight and am so much more in tune with my body. I definitely recommend it if you are in a committed and stable relationship and are willing to do the work. If someone is forgetful or not in a long term relationship where you are willing to take the consequences of an unintended pregnancy then obviously I wouldn’t recommend it. But again I’ve been doing it for many years and the only time I’ve been pregnant is when I planned it.

I recently found that this video, that I will link below, has a really good interpretation of some of the widespread affects that hormonal birth control is having on western society. She even talks about how when some women come off their hormonal birth control they suddenly discover that they are repulsed by the man that are in a relationship with. Its pretty scary stuff and for the most part hormonal birth control is a vast experiment that was started with next to no data backing up its safety or the widespread effects it has women's brains.

Please note this video does use a lot of memes (there is one right at the beginning) throughout the video but her research is based on real studies which she cites throughout the video.

My boyfriend told me that I smelled different and just something about me wasn't attractive when I took the Depo shot. I think the birth control was a factor that led to our initial break up. It makes sense due to the hormone suppression essentially turning you into a menopausal woman. I felt sluggish and noticed my body started to become lumpy in places it normally wouldn't.

BC was the worst experience and in my opinion, aged me before my time in a way. My boyfriend began clocking me as a biologically older woman due to how much it nuked my hormones. Birth control became a deal breaker for him, and some may see it as controlling, but I get it. You're messing with a delicate balance that can directly affect your relationship.

It can seriously impact how your partner sees you, and your attraction to your man as well. There are instances of women on BC going for more effeminate, beta men due to being in near menopause mode all time, but come off of BC and break up with that same man because their hormones recalibrated.

There are extremes on both ends of the contraceptive spectrum... I’m Catholic, and I know women who try to do strict FAM in accordance to Catholic principles (absolutely no contraceptive measures taken other than abstention if there is sufficient reason why a kid, or another kid, is not ideal at that point); some women are extremely frustrated with that approach because it can require abstention during ovulation, when they’re most horny, and can be difficult to use with a cycle that isn’t super regular. On the other hand, I have friends who were put on the pill at 14 for contraceptive reasons, who have literally never experienced their bodies or ovulation in their natural state.

Scenario 2 is awful, but it’s an extreme. For some women, birth control/IUDs/barrier methods used conscientiously may end up enhancing rather than destroying intimacy. It makes sense that FAM can bond a couple, increase communication, and get the guy more involved in their mutual fertility... but if a woman is super irregular or naturally has very long periods, and if she and her partner aren’t absolutely ready for kids, FAM without condoms is stressful Russian roulette.

If culture around sex changes, then statistics and relationships will too.

I think birth control is vital for many many many women. I also think there are a lot of women taking it who should NOT be because of how it affects them specifically.

Myself for example, I got off it because it caused issues for me (tried several brands of oral, ring and IUDs). It just couldn't mix with my other medication without making me really irritable.

My bestrfiend, however, needs it in order to keep her cycles in check after having serious uterine trauma.

It really comes down to staying on top of your health, morals and education.

I'm kinda ehh... on this topic. Birth control has advanced so far it does provide significant freedom to women to engage in casual sex as much as they want, and that can be a negative thing, as well as the fact that they and their partner aren't really getting intune with their body and fertility cycles and how it all works.

But also, I have thoroughly enjoyed having birth control with my husband, as it keeps us from having accidental pregnancies without having to put lots of thought and effort behind it while we're focusing on other goals together that will significantly increase the quality of life for our future children.

"There was a lot of talk about how birth control has been a driving force for divorce," when I hear this I think deep down in my core that if birth control causes the divorce rate to rise it's probably because people don't just "stay together" while their unintended children grow old enough to leave the house. I don't think birth control actually causes people to be less connected, just less imprisoned.

False analogy with the pesticide thing because marriage is not natural..and akin to how guns don't kill people, birth control isn't the issue, it's people ofc...but holy fucking shit, I NEVER thought to apply economics to this, but it makes SO much sense. While I'm not sure if I would entirely agree with the whole video, the Supply/Demand argument is literally rock-solid, and it alone makes this video spectacular. Well, at least that argument.

I think that hormonal BC is very much a net positive. It gave women control over their bodies.

I think a bigger harm to society, however, remains in the other areas that have NOT progressed. Specifically, stale alimony/child support laws and the emergence of No Fault Divorce. It used to be that women were careful about getting pregnant and careful about maintaining their relationships/marriages because they were stuck in that situation, just like the men were. Now, they aren't. There's no incentive to make it work, and every incentive to play the field. People complain that men aren't growing up these days, but just as bad (if not worse) is women not growing up, and instead choosing to ride the CC until they hit the wall.

There's a reason that women's overall happiness has been DECLINING since the pill came out, while men's has held steady.

Overall happiness in society has a lot of factors. One major one being economics. Income to buying power ratio has been on a huge decline since the 70s. Housing and tuition and medicine have skyrocketed. Infertility has a lot to do with plastics in the environment hormones in the food and obesity. There are a ton of issues here. That is a very unsubstantiated claim.

Divorce rate is probably low because of something else, like the sample size, cherry picked data, longevity of the study etc.

People who use birth control alone are a different demographic than those who do not.

Roughly 50% of fertility issues are with men. Sperm count is decreased across the board. Sperm count is decreased in men who are not sexually active or in a relationship and I just dont see women the dont interact with as the cause of that issue. Like i said more to do with lifestyle choices-pesticides, obesity, plastics, sedentary lifestyle.

People in a healthy sexual relationships and those with lifestyle issues are not the same demographic. Chads and incels. Same for women.
