some serious shit happened to me in my divorce, pretty much full-nightmare.

but, remarkably, i still have dignity and my child still loves and respects me; now more than ever actually and he's not even old enough to have any concept of what happened.

the deck may be stacked, as you are noting.. but nobody can steal a man's dignity. a man earns dignity or fails to maintain dignity, etc. and time heals all wounds. if a man can somehow maintain his integrity throughout extreme difficulty (of any kind) he might then be able to stand as a valuable model for his child(ren). he might even be a hero

Men are chumps in general nowadays. Testosterone is lower than ever, they're out of shape (men should undertake gruelling exercise on a regular basis, not just going to the gym and watching their diets), they're addicted to porn and jerking off, and above all (though it's kind of reaching breaking point now) they're totally content with their feeble lifestyles. It's not like most of these men had much dignity before getting married. Boomer and gen x men in particular are petit-bourgeois who play tennis and are satisfied by their pointless careers. They think they're really succeeding as men because they have the good job, nice house, nice car, wife, kids etc. but they don't really do anything or behave in a way that is of a masculine nature (even here, I don't mean what is overtly masculine like being muscly or whatever). Women don't really see them as men, just as men don't really see most women as women anymore. Everyone has just turned into 'people' with petit-bourgeois values, ambitions, and lifestyles, and the expectation or hope for them is to find a 'partner' who they're sexually attracted to and who they get along with.

It's basically impossible to have dignity as a man or woman nowadays, unless you make the explicit effort to do so or grew up in unusual circumstances. The concept is so alien to modern values. It isn't just about doing the same thing as before but hitting the weights and not jerking off so much. It requires a complete rejection of all modern values and mentality. Of course most men never really get there and never really become men.

There's a solution to this problem: be more involved in the kid's life and marry a woman who's not financially dependent on you. Father don't lose custody because they're men. They lose custody because they're usually the less involved parent. They pay alimony because the women they marry become stay at home moms or have no career to begin with.
