You ladies have helped me out before....

My husband and I had a "discussion" this morning about our relationship and my husband asked, "What are you getting out of this?" and I was confused about what he meant by "this", so I described a couple things we do (as a family) that I enjoy and he said, "No, I mean you and I. What are you getting from me besides a paycheck?" So, I talked about the way he does things around the house and plays with our son... But, again, he said, "No, I mean... What do you get from me?" And I couldn't think of anything to say.

To be honest, lately, I've been getting a lot of criticism from him. For example, so far today he has been upset that I... :

  • ...waited for him to get up before I started making breakfast.
  • ...didn't take responsibility (apologise) for hurting our son with a fold-down cabinet door (he stepped on the door while I was opening it and his other foot was still underneath it, but I kissed his toes after he pinched them)
  • ...that I ignored him while I was getting ready in the bathroom.
  • ...that I got in the truck with our son before it had cooled down enough.
  • ...that I couldn't manage to have an adult conversation with him (subject of post) and answer his questions like an adult.
  • ...that I asked him if he wanted me to make him lunch (he doesn't want me to ask, just to do it and if he's hungry, then he'll eat it).
  • ...that I didn't take our noisy son (who was eating lunch at the table with us) out of the room when he got an important phone call.

  • And, that I didn't know where his truck phone charger was before he left for a couple hours.

Anyways. I know he has been stressed about having a lower income than he's used to and he thinks I'm not pulling my weight (SAHM) but more than that, he doesn't feel like we're connected anymore.

We have very little in common, I suppose. He's a jock-type and I'm a book nerd. When we dated, we did a lot of "new-to-me" things: a motorcycle ride, a dinner theater, a seafood dinner, a shooting range, a trip to the mountains, a trip to the beach, bike riding, hiking, studying together at IHOP until 3 in the morning....

And that was followed by other "firsts": graduating college, getting married, getting a good job, having a child, quitting my job, selling my car, and then being micromanaged in every aspect of my life since then.

Most of the time, I like that. I like having clear, defined rules and a strong guiding hand. But, somewhere around the way I lost whatever it was that kept me inspired to inspire him. When we were talking today, I couldn't conjure up any romantic feelings towards him. And, if I'm honest with myself, I haven't really been able to since our son was born. Although, I still do my duty.

Side note: I understand that sex is HUGE for a guy and mine never stops stressing how important it is to him and complains how we're having less sex than he used to get with his ex-wife, but I told him half-joking that I would have to start logging all the times he turned me down. Seriously this week, we had sex once. The other times... he went out after dinner, he was too tired or stressed, or his mind "wasn't in the right place", and once our son was having a rough night, so I stayed with him and my husband fell asleep.

I don't want him to think I've stopped believing in him, but I'm having a hard time doing more than "going through the motions". I hate that blank feeling I got after his last question!! How do I make that feeling come back??

I've tried visualizing why my role is important. I've tried recalling our "honeymoon" phase. I've tried visualizing a future without him. And all I see is duty and sadness.
