Modern birth control didn't exist until after the last half of the century, so I don't understand how people can still separate sex and pregnancy. It's mind-blowing to me. Also, it was more customary for people to get married and "start a family," so I don't see where you're getting this idea that men were thinking about "consistent sex and companionship" from. They were encouraged by their own families to make families of their own, and since these values were held not too long ago, we still see them being held today.

You don't have to get married to have children. People get married because "it means something" to them, and also because the system encourages it. It's not the "main purpose."

women get married because they want to have a big shiny ring to show off to their friends and a big party that's all about her where she gets to dress like a princess. and then after that she will be able to relax and not worry about the guy leaving her.

men get married because if they don't marry this chick she will eventually get sick of waiting and dump him and then he will have to start dating again and go through all that hassle to find another one willing to fuck him

Sex and companionship don't always go together. Indeed I've found only a tiny fraction of women who are perfectly satisfactory sex partners are good companions. So I'd say marriage today is about securing a long-term companion more than it is about securing sex.

Other reasons to get married: status, being able to say you have a husband/wife, a sign of commitment, because you want to get married etc.

Certainly for the bottom 80% SMV guys. For the upper 20% SMV guys getting consistent sex and companionship was easier but not certain.

I just do not even feel like debating this point anymore, I will borrow the line from the Wolfgang Pauli: "This isn't right. This isn't even wrong"

Marriage is just a social status symbol that women often care more about than men. It really does nothing for you other than give you a 1-2 year ego boost.

But yes. Sex being so available and ready for everyone messed things up. You can attain a lot of benefits of marriage outside of marriage and escape some negatives. You do miss out on some positives and there are other negatives but overall it can be a net positive.

Marriage is kinda an irrelevant institution. But yes, the only reason to ltr (marriage or otherwise) a woman is for children. Otherwise, the downsides massively outweighs the upsides. On the other hand, if you want children you really should ltr her. Best for children to grow up in a two-parent household.

It wasn't online/tinder that made that switch.... Before Us Gen X-ers created those apps for you Millenials there was dating out in real life and general hook-up culture back then too. In the stone age !

What made marriage about kids wasn't so much Tinder as it was freely available and eminently affordable contraception.

Before THAT if you wanted to have sex you had to get married (because babies were coming whether you wanted them or not).

After common and easy to use contraception, you didn't.

Back in the 70's, 80's and 90's we had things called "parties" and "nightclubs" and "bars" to find single men and women in. You could even put adverts in the newspaper if you wanted to go on dates without bothering with attending social gatherings.

Tinder is just an evolution of the society freely available contraception made possible. It didn't invent it.

I wouldn't be surprised if most men didn't want to get married these days. It's a well known fact that the more sexual partners a woman has had, the higher the likelihood of divorce. And because of how rampant hook up culture is it is difficult to find a woman that has had less than 5 sexual partners.
