I get that people shouldn't be getting married early or too soon after meeting a person, however that doesn't mean that marriage doesn't mean something to people. Marriage adds an extra protective shell over a relationship, that you can't just casually break up with someone, you have to actually divorce them. It means that you are confident you won't leave your spouse, and that she wont leave you.

I have been with my current girlfriend for around 9 months, I like her a lot, and she's by far the longest relationship I've ever been in, but if I had been dating her for 5 or 6 years and we were still happy I would probably marry her.

In a regular relationship, an argument can easily lead to a breakup, no matter how small.

In a marriage, it takes a whole lot more for both to commit to a divorce.

Thats the big difference as to why marriage should be important for some people. The difference is pushing it on everyone, whereas I think that only maybe half of our population should be married by 50. Once you hit your 30s, theres a ridiculous pressure to settle down and marry and have children, which I don't think is okay because a lot of men don't want that.

I would somewhat agree with that statement, IF a.) It would work both ways in all cases. Men should get half their exes shit if she made more money then them, EVEN if they do nothing but sit at home all day being unproductive (thinking of Halle Berry and her ex) b.) No-fault divorces were thrown out and new laws were put in place, where both women and men lost all claim to their half if one of them was caught cheating and it wasn't agreed upon that it's okay beforehand (i.e. open relationship)

Then, and only then I'd consider it. Despite it still being disadvantageous to men (because # of rich men > # of rich women). It would reduce the divorce rape dramatically though.
