Most people can easily discern between films and real life at a young age.

I don't understand why this is such a prevalent theme on PPD.

Yeah pretty much. A couple is together, the man always does something innocuous and then woman does a backflip freaking it about it. The man must then prostrate himself and profusely apologize, and show that he NEEEEEEEDS her. That's the only way they can get back together.

I do think that fiction (not just TV and movies) often represents unrealistic relationships, or unhealthy, one-sided dynamics. It doesn't bother me much, but yeah, it's a thing.

They become very needy in the way they pine after this one woman when there are other women they could go out with and start relationships.

I'm not sure your example is about neediness -- isn't it more the concept of The One or maybe true love? They pine after "this one woman" not because they're needy in general, but because she's The One -- which is very, very, very common in fiction and apparently the ultimate romantic fantasy. They are utterly devoted to her not because needy behavior is great, because she's The One. It's not really a healthier outlook, obviously; I just don't think it's necessarily an example of neediness. It probably often leads to needy or codependent behavior, but I see that as a side-effect, not something directly encouraged.

(No idea what Robin&Ted's or Niles&Daphne's relationship is like though, so maybe they are needy.)

Probably, but it makes for a better story and character than some guy with abundance mentality, which seems more shallow, so I don't think that the trope is going to go away anytime soon.

hmmmm the tv i grew up on taught men to be needy and women to be independent. that's why no one acts in an attractive manner anymore really.

The real tragedy is that so many young men have nowhere to go but TV to learn how relationships work. But that's what happens when you have an atomized society and the few people that could instill wisdom don't do so because you're not supposed to talk about gender differences.

they dont encourage it, they cater to it. men think needy is the way to go and women want needy. thats why titanic is such a hit, cause he killed himself for her
