I think we have extremely different definitions of manual labor.

I guess to answer your question, I assume you must live in a city. City people are weak by nature, I've realized that ever since I moved.. we treat our women with true equality here

People just get jealous when they see someone worker harder than they do. If you work with hard workers this doesn't seem to be an issue.

It's benevolent sexism -- the idea that a woman is ill-suited to physical labour.

Made my first job (at a bakery!) really weird. My boss hired me and then got strangely mad whenever I tried to actually do anything because girls don't do that.

I was like, ''mate, can't you just pretend I have a dick because I'm hella bored right now?!''

It's stupid, but it is an unspoken bias -- not a preference -- that will make some people, unintentionally, encourage you be fat and prissy instead of hardworking.

Probably because third wave feminism has taught men that women have inherent value just for being women, so a woman doing manual labor is subjecting oneself to a subservient position that men are supposed to do.

I'm from the south and that doesn't really exist here women with lip injections and fake tits climb up blinds and hunt deer in the freezing cold or drive combine tractors n shit, its fucking dope.

I've heard theories that women who overexert themselves with back breaking manual labor might increase their testosterone and become less womanly. But we're not talking about stock pharmacy shelves but things like underwater welding or fishing king crab in Alaska

I don't know, but I used to work for the USPS doing package handling (the really, really heavy stuff, bulk tires/car parts, large electronics, aquariums, etc) and I ran into similar attitudes. And I was really fat back then so I was also pretty...idk strong I guess, but I also felt ridiculous being so fat but acting like a priss who couldn't lift or do anything. I almost fucked my back up at the ripe old age of 22 trying to ~prove~ something.

I don't think it was resentment for the most part though. There were a handful of occasions where some of the women kind of got on me about about making them look bad or making their shift harder or whatever but that wasn't exactly resentment, or at least not for the typical reasons.

No one likes that coworker, who seems to be going above and beyond or outdoing them. Being that one employee who makes a point to "keep herself busy" when the others just want to stand around because they're in the 1000th hour of their shift and their fucking feet hurt just makes other people look bad and makes YOU look like an asskisser. I went through the same thing.

The only, only times I can ever really say it was possibly some kind of "resentment" thing was when I was able to lift something a male coworker wasn't or cleared more packages during a shift. And even then, that was more about ego/performance.

Well, I'm a woman who works in the construction industry and I have definitely observed these attitudes; though I am not a labourer, I'm an architect, I agree that there are certain prejudices that emerge when women are labourers (or when they try to be labourers and are shut out, which is often the case)

I've had female plumbers/surveyors/electricians/general workers (almost every role actually) on my sites before, and they are almost universally treated as a liability by their companies and their co-workers; I find this actually laughable because I have never had a female labourer go against health and safety regulations the way some of the dumdums on my sites do (so many stories.) As an architect one of my primary roles is managing health and safety on site, so this is something I actually have records of.

With our current construction technologies, as well as regulations for worker protection (not lifting more than 50kg being an obvious one); most women could actually be construction workers, however most construction firms or development companies would not hire a female construction worker, they prefer to fill their 'equal opportunities' quotas in other ways. This is not technically 'wrong' because often these other roles are higher earning positions in administration or even management, but they do preclude women from gaining entry into the construction industry at the lowest level. I believe this imbalance undermines the women who are higher up the food chain (I deal with a lot of whiny and sarcastic comments from men who don't like taking instruction from women, even when it is literally their legal obligation to do so.)

When these firms do hire female labourers, often they are relegated to insignificant or mundane roles; I worked on a site where we had to redirect traffic for 4 months, the firm used their 2 female construction workers to switch off on traffic duty, rather than normal protocol which is to have various workers switch out when they want a break.

I don't even know if I would call it benevolent sexism, because there is an undercurrent of resentment and even hatred often directed at these women. After observing the way that these women are treated at their jobs (and being treated thusly myself, especially by construction workers) I can understand why more women don't become labourers, or even why so many women chose to leave these types of employment opportunities after a few years of doing them.

It would be like a white guy picking cotton in the 1800s while a perfectly good negro sits on the porch. It challenges the whole social order of who exists to serve whom.

First off I thought something different when I read manual labor, this sounds like normal stuff, things which I do at home.

I think it's because if you so it other women will be expected to do it too. Not now, maybe in a while.

I work at a pharmacy. I prefer passing the time by finding work to do, so I'm always stocking, cleaning, whatever.

This is not manual labor.

The following occupations are "manual labor":

Mover

Trades (plumbing, carpentry, steelwork, millwrighting, machining, electrician, roofing, pipefitting, etc.)

Professional lawn care/landscaping

Construction

Railroad track maintenance, rolling stock and locomotive maintenance

Vehicle operators (truck drivers, forklift drivers, heavy earth moving equipment operators)

THAT is manual labor. Stocking shelves at a pharmacy and light cleaning is NOT "manual labor".

Yeah, I'm honestly going to say your definition of "manual labour" is ridiculous. That barely counts as labour. My first job was at grocery store. The women at the deli would cut up melons and make salads, and throw the heavy part in the trash. They let the trash get so full that they wouldn't be able to move the bin, much pick up the bag. They always called me to take out the trash. I got pissed at one point and told them to stop filling up the bag that much and to take out their own trash, It's in their job description. Their response was "What happened to men?". Even then I didn't consider that "manual labour".

I later worked in recycling plant for a few months. You want manual labour? let me tell you about manual labour. My job was to take old pieces of electronics (think, tv's from the 60's, printers, scanners, tube monitors etc etc), to disassemble them enough to take out the dangerous parts (mercury in monitors, liquids in tube tv's etc), then to lift whatever is remaining up to the top of a huge shredder and throw it in. Do you have any idea how heavy this thing is?I must have taken apart dozens of those. We had to wear full personal protective equipment in 35*C weather. The air was filled with dust. We would do this 9 hours a day, 6 days a week. By the time I got home, my body ached from the top down, my clothes were drenched, I blew black ooze out of my nose and all I could do was collapse in bed, only to wake up and do it all over again.

And there are jobs out there that make that job look like cooking a pie.

It is baffling. I'm trying to figure out as to why, as I've heard of women who work as scaffolders, labourers, etc getting the same treatment. Usually the response is, just let me do my job, or leave me alone, especially if it's just a random guy asking to help when it's a job that she can easily do. I guess it's just guys simply having a certain view of women.
