What I know about masculine issues is limited, and a lot of it comes from reading Reddit. Claiming I have the slightest clue always felt like a kind of deception.

But right now the top problem women face are man-spreading, cat calling and societal pressure to look pretty.

And not single parenthood poverty, balancing the emotional needs of a child with a job or two that doesn't care what kind of kids the neighborhood will raise while you're either gone or exhausted? Not the way young girls are sexualized? Not the way boys are raised to think PiV is the only sign you love/like them? Not the way birth control pills can cause terrifying mood swings? Not the way breast cancer gets all the attention, while other health issues are neglected? Not the way older women don't just simply vanish, the way they often do in the media? Not the way that aggressive women are the women given special rights to hurt both men and women, by people living in the past, which isn't actually the kind of rights most want, and these women may not even be able to find help, if they're self-aware enough to seek it? How about the way the political system is giving us a choice between a man about to have his rape trial, and the enabler of an accused rapist (his accuser has witnesses), while tearing apart more qualified women?

No. Humanism isn't an alternative to feminism in my book.

By identifying as a feminist, you've already drawn a line in the sand that basically says, "If it doesn't help women in some way, fuck you. Not my problem.

Bullshit. One can care about and work toward solutions for more than one thing at a time. Specificity is important in these matters- I am a feminist because I believe the patriarchy hurts men and women in the western world. I believe women in developing nations need to be raised up for their sake and the sake of those nations. But that doesn't mean I don't recognize other serious issues or even put more energy into those issues.

They all have different goals and issues that I don't see as incompatible.

For the record I do identify as a humanist and not really the others although I'm probably not using the same definitions you are.

Feminism is the equality of women AND men, meaning that feminists are fighting for the equality of both genders, BC for some reason people Seem to think that one gender is better than the other, and that's Simply not true AT ALL. Men do face problems that society has thrown on them, whether it's the stereotype that they aren't supposed to be emotional, or that they shouldn't be concerned about fashion, etc etc, so in a way it is kind of humanism, BC it's not just focusing on women, it's focusing on Trans women, Minority women, Minority Men, Trans men, gay women, gay men, YOU NAME IT! just BC the name is FEMinism doesn't mean it's fighting for the Rights of just women. However It's named is FEMinism BC women do face a lot more challenges than men do on a daily basis, like being pressured into looking a certain way, & Act a certain way, women are being cat called, and Slut shamed, women are still being placed in this stereotype of being house wives that shouldn't be educated and only care for the children, PLUS THE WAGE GAP ( that is a very real thing ). Men have a lot more advantages in daily life, and the Feminism movement is about giving women those same advantages.

Literally to some it up, yes feminists do put a lot of their Attention in problems that women deal with, But no that doesn't mean that they don't care about anyone else's problems, they care about them Equally, so saying that feminists only care about problems that women go through is Complete B.S, and I suggest before you try and talk down on something or to say the least, share your opinion you educate yourself so you don't make a complete fool of yourself, like you did today.

I can understand why a woman would self-identity as a feminist, but I cannot understand why a man would possibly do that. Although, the cynic in me thinks that sucking up to women, or a woman, is probably the motivating factor for that.

No. Mainly because humanist already means something (actually several things). I don't think feminism is incompatible with humanism, and I would probably also agree with the label of humanist.

Based on my extremely limited understanding of humanism, it seems great, and I would absolutely identify that way, but feminism is a little more specific as a term, which I think makes it a more effective label for now - it gives my interlocutor more information about where I'm coming from :)

I don't know about oppression, but I think there are definitely still gender inequalities that are worth straightening out - men being pressured to always be the ones approaching women, and feeling like worthless failures if they're not successful at that, or just plain being labelled creepy for their lack of success/social awareness. Conversely, the expectation that women be passive and indirect, because if you're too straightforward you're crass and unladylike - but if you're too indirect, you're passive-aggressive. You're absolutely right about these beings far from the most important issues facing humanity, but I think they're worth crushing anyway :) They take their toll. And it's not like taking an interest in these issues means you can't also be interested in the more important issues, too!

Also, the latest iteration of feminism has very intersectional connotations, so identifying as a feminist also sort of indicates that I care about issues surrounding race and sexuality, as well as gender, which I find useful.
