If you think so, can you back this up with some kind of evidence? (You don't have to provide sources.)

While individual women might want different things, here is my list of what I think women generally want in a man and my thoughts on whether society misleads men about these things:

  1. Earns enough money to support a family (I don't think society misleads men about this, if anything female attraction to money is exaggerated).

  2. Is sexually attractive (I don't think society misleads men about this, the media gives a fairly clear and accurate message of what's physically attractive, and I don't know how people can go through life and not notice that good looks are important in attracting the opposite sex).

  3. Is fun to be around (just seems like common sense, people like to have fun, although what is fun would depend on the woman and some women might want to discuss politics while others might want to drink and party, I don't think society misleads men about this but I don't know if this is necessarily promoted).

  4. Treats the woman well, is caring and empathetic towards his woman (I don't think society misleads men about this, I'd say there are plenty of messages to this effect).

  5. Status, power, ambition (I don't think society misleads men about this, if anything the importance of this is exaggerated).

  6. Various strengths which might include physical strength, intelligence, psychological strength, any kind of skills (I don't think society misleads men about this and it seems like common sense that strengths would be attractive and weaknesses unattractive, but I don't know to what extent society actively promotes various strengths as desirable traits in men).

  7. Dependability, loyalty, trustworthiness (I don't think society misleads men about this, I think it ties into 4)).

  8. General masculine traits like leadership, toughness, being able to take care of shit, independence etc. (I don't think society misleads men about this, and maybe this is promoted in the media in the form of the sorts of traits the male leads/heroes have.)

I think what women want is on display in media directed at women, say in something like 50 Shades of Grey. If a man wants to know what women want, all he needs to do is find out what fictional men have generated a lot of female interest/obsession and see what they are like (with the understanding that fictional men are not going to be realistic and might have the extremes of desirable qualities i.e. be a billionaire or have superhuman strength and speed).

Also, since the real world is not filled with perfect men, women are going to end up compromising. And when women are looking for a husband they might put a greater emphasis on qualities that would make a good husband and father than they would if they were just looking to have say a brief relationship or casual sex.

Thought I'd add another one, kind of relates to "2) Is sexually attractive...", but I made it about physical attraction whereas there is also the psychological/chemistry aspect, so:

9) Is sexually attractive in non physical ways, so could be due to things like banter, flirting, I personally find debating to be a turn on if the guy is smart and can hold his own or "win". (Not sure what society says on this, maybe flirting/seduction is known to be sexy.)
