I love Artemisia! She's one of my favourite artists. She's WAY better than Caravaggio but gets a fraction of the recognition.

She made dozens of paintings of women chopping men's heads off. I love to see it 🤗

Artemisia Gentileschi is one of my favourite painters ever.

A lot of females were overshadowed by their male relatives because of old times. It's time to stop and invert the trend. Let the praise and recognition be where it belongs.

/i'm a female PhD theoretical physicist and i have been belittled a lot even in my young age (i'm 28 years old). Luckily there are also people that recognize my and every female colleague values. Point is, these things shouldn't concern luck but value, worth, talent and hard work. I'll always fight for a more equal world and environment.

If anybody wants to learn more about this amazing artist and women in art you should read “The Passion of Artemisia” by Susan Vreeland “Ways of Seeing” by John Berger (dm me if you would like a pdf of the chapter it’s really short) “Great Women Artists” by multiple contributors “I Know What I Am: The Life and Times of Artemisia Gentileschi” by Gina Siciliano “Women in Art: 50 Fearless Creatives Who Inspired the World” by Rachel Ignotofsky ,and many more but I will stop here 😂I study art and design and have a passion for art history so this post made me want to write so much more than I have.

One important point about her, which I believe is worth mentioning now that we see her as conspiratorial towards men— is that she was a woman born to a noble and educated family, and her anachronistic career was sponsored, surveiled and encouraged by her eccentric father, painter Orazio Gentileschi. Her role in a 17th c Italy was arguably a product of patriarchy and she was kept buoyant by men who supported her, and accompanied and protected her on her travels..

Calling attention to the fathers role or how patriarchy created and helped her doesnt make you popular, and is basically asking for it from many art historians. I personally find this fathers support in to his daughter against all odds is Fucking beautiful and important to consider for a second, in a world where horrible formative father-daughter narratives often serve as origin stories.

Behind some remarkable women there was an awesome dad who let this girl into his studio and taught his trade to her, and financed her, even after she was raped, in an era where a girls body is normally deemed ‘damaged goods’. It’s important to own this in feminism— some men are awesome at helping us, and believing in us, but it’s super taboo to discuss this about this artist because her cult status centuries later is not in alignment with acknowledging her privelege from her dads wealth and career.

I have a degree in history in this and Gentileschi means a lot to me as well, it’s cool to see some history up on FDS.
