Besides acting as a contraceptive, birth control can have good and bad side effects for different women. Sometimes it gives you acne, sometimes acne goes away. Sometimes it makes periods and pms worse, sometimes better. That’s something to talk to your doctor about and potentially try out different ones.

The birth control pill stops you from ovulating, so an egg is not released and is therefore not available to be fertilized; it doesn’t cause abortion. Condoms can break or slip off, and then you would have to take Plan B, which it seems like he would be similarly ideologically against (as it also works by delaying ovulation a few days—it does not cause an abortion). You’re both entitled to your beliefs, just the two options aren’t really that different in that regard.

I personally find it a lot more intimate to have sex without condoms, so that would be a plus of birth control pills. But yes, if you’re fine with condoms there’s no real reason to change.

I think your boyfriend is being smart and prudent. He knows that he is against abortion and does not want to do things against his values. Even if you have different values, if you want the relationship to work, you have to respect his boundaries and he has to respect yours. He is clearly uncomfortable with abortion and you should respect that.

Certain birth control methods (namely the pill) have closer to a 90% chance of preventing pregnancy than 99% because users, especially inexperienced ones, may not be mindful enough to take it everyday at the same time. At 18, your boyfriend is smart enough to recognize the risks that come with unprotected sex, even if you two are committed to each other. He also shows how considerate he is of YOU for thinking about the very real health complications that occur on birth control.

To be quite honest, most of the physical downsides of using condoms are experienced by men - if he is completely okay with that and even prefers it, I’d take him at his word and make sex a comfortable and safe environment for the BOTH of you by continuing to use condoms. If you want to use birth control in conjunction with him using condoms, it’s your choice to do so.

The best non normal method that will prevent pregnancy before eggs are even released would be the copper IUD. It is 99.8% effective and will not have any other effects on your body. Because it stops ovulation, there is absolutely no relationship between this method and abortion. If you want to stop using condoms without risking pregnancy, this is absolutely your safest bet aside from abstinence. I know this because I taught sex-Ed before I was red pilled.

Edit: it turns out I misremembered and the copper IUD does not stop ovulation, but rather prevents fertilization. The pill stops ovulation. Check out this article for more info

I agree with what others have said and my personal opinion is that hormonal birth control is something to rather be avoided since you only know after long use how it will interact with your individual physiology.

So I would highly appreciate that your boyfriend prioritizes the effect that it could have on your body.

I have several female friends where the woman does not tolerate hormonal birth control well, but the man is not willing to use condoms so they suffer and birth control is a constant daily source of tiredness, skin problems, even pain, irregularities in period, moodiness etc.

I think it is wonderfull that your bf does not want to put the two of you at risk for that.

As for the TSH example - your body is not lacking birth control hormones. It has what it needs. Pumping it full of synthetics to shut down a functioning system is not “giving your body what it needs” and should be taken lightly or pretended like it won’t have any consequences.

Hormonal birth control does not cause abortion. Hormonal birth control prevents ovulation, which means you do not get pregnant in the first place (if you use it correctly). This is just science.

My thoughts are, educate yourselves on how birth control and conception works.

Some books you may like for info on what hormonal contraceptives really do to your body are Period Repair Manual and The Fifth Vital Sign.

Barriers sound like they may be your best bet for now.

If you were to learn real fertility awareness, not one based on the calendar or an app, your success will be as high as the pill EVEN with irregular cycles. And to boot, you won’t have to use condoms every single time.

Fertility awareness is a vital skill for all women of all ages. It is not “too advanced” or “hard to learn” for younger women.

If you are old enough to have sex you are old enough to know how your body functions. Especially since sex causes you to think about your bodily functions.

People who say FAM is too hard or too confusing are usually unaware of how their body works or were not taught til an older age so they have that certain impression of it.

Imagine if all pre-menses girls were taught how their bodies really worked. They’d be more empowered to not succumb to toxic synthetic hormones (which damage for years down the road) to “fix” them/their moods/their cycles, empowered to know what is normal or not for their menstrual health (which reflects many other systems’ health), and empowered to make informed sexual decisions.
