First, congratulations. It was the best money I ever spent. Better than LASIK surgery, and far better than a college education. $800 that I would estimate has saved me $400,000 over the years. To say nothing of the psychological rewards from never having to worry. If you're promiscuous or even monogamous, and you don't want kids, you're crazy not to.

First, it's really not that painful. More uncomfortable than anything else, and not even that uncomfortable. I saw several doctors before finding one who was willing to perform on a childless man, and the experience differs little from doctor to doctor.

The doctor examined me, then scheduled me for a week or two later. If you don't already shave, I'd shave beforehand rather than letting the nurses do it. You lie down on the table with your genitals exposed and the surrounding area covered. They inject a local anaesthetic above your groin (not in your penis nor your scrotum, don't worry), and get to work a few minutes later.

The doctor asked if I wanted a mirror. I declined, and I'm glad I did. He cuts a hole maybe 1/4" wide in your scrotum, between your testes. Then he pulls the vas deferens out, which is still attached inside you. It looks like lo mein. He cuts about an inch of the vas deferens out, cauterizes the ends, puts everything back and sews you up. That's it.

WEAR EXTRA-EXTRA-LARGE SWEATPANTS TO THE SURGERY, and no underwear. I foolishly wore jeans. I drove home, but after a block I couldn't take the swelling anymore and had to take off my pants before driving the rest of the way home pantsless. If you wear something extremely roomy and comfortable, you'll be fine.

You're not going to want to have sex, or masturbate, for the first few days. You don't need to ice your scrotum, but it probably isn't a bad idea. I think I was fine 4-5 days later. (It's been about 9 years.)

You go back for a follow-up visit after you've ejaculated 20 times. On your follow-up visit you have to masturbate into a test tube. They test it then and there to make sure there's no sperm in your semen, and once they get the test results you're all clear.

There exist horror stories of vasectomies reconnecting, but it happens in something like 1 out of 4000 cases. Some doctors ask you to come back in a year, just in the extremely unlikely event that the ends of the vas deferens reconnected. The more of it your doctor removes originally, the less the (already microscopic) likelihood of reconnection. If you're paranoid like I was, you can buy a sperm test kit at any drugstore for like $40. (But for you, that'll be way down the road anyway.) Same principle applies - you masturbate, put your semen on the test strip, and see if it changes color.

Now, the fun part (aside from ejaculating inside women with abandon.) I had one woman try to mess with my head after our "relationship" ended abruptly. I had never mentioned the vasectomy to her - I didn't think I needed to - and a few weeks later she called me to say "I'm late." She obviously wanted me to freak out, but I've never had such an easy time maintaining frame. I was cool and unshakeable as she cried and tried to get me to believe that she and I could be having a child. I ignored her subsequent phone calls, and they eventually stopped.

If she had pulled that nonsense before I'd had the surgery, I'd have been tearing my hair out and sweating bullets. Instead, my heart rate didn't budge.

So yeah, a vasectomy is highly, highly, highly recommended. And it's far more reliable than a woman who claims she's on the pill. Or claims she has an intrauterine device, or a hysterectomy, or whatever.

And if you're ever in a long-term relationship with someone who doesn't want kids, it's only fair that you get sterilized, not her. Male sterilization is far less complex and less risky than female sterilization.

Never had kids, never wanted kids.

Went into the doc's office, had a 10 minute conversation about why. He said he often sends guys home with a cooling-off period if the interview indicates it, but I was apparently eloquent in my desire to NEVER have kids. My health insurance covered the procedure, so unsure of cost.

Dropped pants, laid back. Needleless numbing shot right between the balls, feels like someone flicked your sack with their finger.

Chatted while medication numbed away. Single small cut, maybe 1/4 inch, can reach both vas through it. Some small pains as doc located each vas and pulled out a loop, short crampy blips. He snipped off a 1/2 inch section, showed it to me (white spaghetti). The smell of burning hair as he cauterized both cut ends (some docs only seal the outgoing end - less swelling, as the sperm drain into your scrotum rather than engorging your testicles, but I wanted to be SURE no fail), which were then clipped off as well with tiny metal clips.

Drove home no issues. That night, swelling. Pain, dull ache. intermittent icing. Not a great 3 days. Hung around the house, took tylenol.

Back to work, had the same dull ache for about 2 weeks. No masturbation by choice, wasn't willing to deal with the pain I knew would come.

After that, started testing the equipment. First few times, orgasm was painful as tightening balls pulled and tugged uncomfortably, leading to short sharp unexpected twinges. Volume seemed lower, but maybe observation bias. Less distance, but attributed that to taking it easy.

Now, years later (after the classic drunk captain awakening, going nuclear, divorce), one of the best decisions. No pain, no issues at all. If I go looking for them, I can still find the clips, but painless. Literally back to pre-vasectomy function.

I'm 45, have 3 exclusive to me plates who we've all tested clean. It's amazing to orgasm balls deep without any anxiety, issues, concerns. Orgasms seem longer and more intense, but it may just be because freedom. My other 3 up and coming girls I still condom up with despite them saying they're clean (gotta prove it). I got a vasectomy almost 6 years ago, the day before I received confirmation that my divorce was finalized oddly enough.

I was a little nervous, for obvious reasons. But I trusted my doctor since he'd been my primary care physician for years. This little procedure was done at the doctor's office. Well, he had me disrobe while he got gloves on. Then he applied a topical anesthetic to my scrotum, right on the seam, followed up by a numbing shot (kinda like at the dentist) and got to work.

My doctor was really into flight, he had wanted to be a pilot. And this day turned out to be the anniversary of the Red Baron getting shot down or something like that. So while he's cutting into my sack with a scalpel I'm hearing all these Red Baron stories in great detail (none of which I can remember).

He also explained what he was doing, while he was doing it. He made a small hole, less than half an inch long, right along the seam in my scrotum. He used his gloved fingers to coax out the tube (vas deferens?) that runs between one testicle to the jizz reservoir. He cut a small section out, showed it to me. It looked like an over-cooked ramen noodle. He applied titanium clamps to the ends still attached to my body, then cauterized the ends. This process was repeated for the cord from the other testicle. When it was all done, he didn't even need to put a stitch in, due to the magical properties of tightening scrotum skin- just a bandaid, some ointment, an rx for percocet, and a note that I should take two days off work. I didn't really need the percocet but it's fun. I took him up on the recommendation of a bag of frozen peas on the balls though.

So, once that healed up, I was free to bang without worry of pregnancy. No discernible difference in performance, jizz, or anything really. Just shooting ghost sperm. Women seem to like it.

Also, after some years passed, I can't even find the scar anymore.

As far as cost goes, I think I was supposed to pay $50 for a co-pay (my insurance covered the rest). Not sure I ever paid that or received a bill for it.

Ive got 3 kids so I am done. (Yes been married 25 years things are fine) I had it about 15 months ago. Zero difference other than sometimes my balls hurt. Mine hurt for about 3 -4 weeks and every once in a while usually if we have some marathon sex day where the wife and I screw 3-4 times in a day. It happens about every 6 weeks. That is all i can come up with.

Had mine done in 2012 CANNOT recommend this enough

Simple outpatient procedure. Took 1 valium before the op. Was awake the entire 20 minutes. Felt no pain except 1 or 2 small pinches. Weirdest thing was when they cauterized it and I saw smoke rising from my balls.

Healing was easy. Had it done on a Thursday, back to work Monday in a factory. Was sore for 2 weeks. Rested the entire weekend. The incisions were small. Like pea-sized on each side of the sack.

DO IT. My insurance paid 800 of $1200. I paid 400 and that was it. No complications.

Keep in mind, if you decide to reverse it there's a 50% chance of it not working. And even with a V there's a 5% chance it can reverse on it's own.

So if you ever get told "I'm pregnant" go get retested.

Do not have sex for 2 months after the procedure without a condom. You have to be confirmed sterile.

It was more painful than I expected, but not terrible. Frozen peas and Netflix are my best advice. Don't exert yourself like I did. As for cost, my medical insurance covered it all.

Something I did not expect was the distinct difference in how my gf at the time would perceive me. Her interest / attraction dropped precipitously after the procedure, which from an evolutionary perspective makes sense.

Had it done a little over a year ago. No needle, no scalpel method. Took 15 minutes from pants off to pants back on. Minimal pain after the fact. Went shopping two days later with the wife at the mall. No issues. Wear tight underwear for a week. Clean the pipes the number of times the doctor tells you, submit a sample, clean pipes, submit sample. After that you will be deemed sterile if everything went well. Insurance covered my costs and I would not hesitate to do it again if I had to do it. Best decision I ever made. Just as a side bar, exogenous testosterone can cause infertility. If it does, there is a chance that it can also be restored as well. So, if all goes well, you can have extraordinary high levels of T and be infertile only to reverse it as you please. This is not in all cases..

There has never been anything else in my life that was so simple and also provided me with so much peace of mind.

In and out of the procedure in about 20 minutes.

Doc gave me a script for a single valium which I took an hour before. (Obviously have someone else drive.) Went in to the room pretty spaced-out, but generally chill.

Slight lidocaine "pinch" is all you feel during the incision. Felt more weird than pain. He asks me if I want to see before he snips the vas defrens. "Sure. Why not." Looks like a big spaghetti noodle. There was some sort of cauterization, because I remember saying, "What's that smell?". Doc and nurse both chuckle. He sews up the incision and hands me a script for painkillers and says fill if needed (I don't think I did).

Post-recovery is also laid back. I think I was back on the SL 5x5 in about 10 days. Slight amount of tenderness for a few days, but I was at work the next day.

20 loads required until "zero count". Send back a sample for a verification test. They call back with the all-clear.

No pain. No loss of function. No decrease in libido. It was as if it never really happened. Except...

The peace-of-mind you gain after the procedure is not to be underestimated. Sex is so much more enjoyable when even the remote specter of involuntary impregnation is removed.

If future children are not a concern or desire, 100% recommend.

Depends on where you live. In Canada, it was free. Mild discomfort for the procedure (about a half hour), then no lifting for a week, stay off your feet (you can still work if you have a desk job). Other then that.. .no prob.

Got mine 8 years ago after the birth of my fourth daughter (no sons unfortunately). It was a no scalpel vasectomy.

Got a local anesthesia right where the penis and ball sac meet. Almost painless needle stick until he placed it just right. Felt like I had stuck my tongue on a 9 volt battery. About five seconds later, totally numb.

The needle used for the procedure was maybe 1/8" in diameter. Through there, he used a hook to pull out the vas deferens. I had mine tied, cauterized, and snipped because my body likes to repair itself nearly perfect. The whole procedure from sitting down in the exam room to walking out took about twenty minutes.

Interesting you bring this up now, I'm getting my vasectomy done next Monday! I decieced about 2 years ago that I do not want to have kids (I love them but they are not for me). I started with making an appointment at the clinic. Everything went great and got a referral approved (Tricare is paying all of it and I'm paying zero). Went to a Urology and talked to the doctor there. I'm a bit younger (23 at the time) and he requested that I wait 6 months to give me some reflection time. 5 and so months later I got a bag of peas in my freezer and counting down the days.

I had to shave my balls before going. Then the nurse (who wasn't attractive) tapes you up and yanks it around while doing so - would have been nicer if she was hot...

I did not have any pain after. Did the peas thing once or twice and I took one of the Tylenol with Percocet but didn't even need the rest.

When I went to the doc for it, I had to go back with my wife and he talked to us to be sure that's what we wanted. We have 4 kids and were early 40's at the time. I think some docs will not do it if you are young and have no kids. You may need to hunt for a doc to do it in that case.

I'm 36, have 2 kids, and we're done with the children. Each BC method has it's pros and cons, there is no "perfect solution." The pill is dependent on your partner's ability to take it regularly. Condoms suck because who likes to fuck with a glove on? No one I've ever met. It's a smart idea, but it still sucks. The IUD has a tendency to fuck with the chemistry downstairs and if you're not totally mismatched with the girl for size, you can feel it during intercourse. Fishing line on the head of your dick is somewhat distracting. Vasalgel is an amazing idea, and will probably be the go-to method in the future, but it's development is painfully slow (seriously, google it and donate to the cause if you're interested, they need the help). My wife was having various hormonal problems not limited to 15+ migraine days a month with no other obvious causes. So, since she had been taking care of the BC thing for the majority of our marriage, we both know we're done having kids, and my lifestyle (I have free reign to pursue other relationships while maintaining this one), I decided it was in my best interest to get snipped. Vasalgel was just taking too long, and the right thing to do was to zero out the sperm count now instead of waiting until 2018 only to hear the FDA didn't approve it or some bullshit.

I had the procedure done in April. The doc told me I'd need a week off of work (I have an extremely physical job, desk jockeys won't need more than a weekend). Things were going good for the first day - minor swelling, the incision looked nasty, but not bad. Second day, the shit hit the fan. That's when the swelling and the pain got out of control. But hey, the doc said I needed a week to recover, so I spent the next few days with a bag of peas on my junk laying on the couch cleaning off the DVR. I literally did exactly what they tell you to - I didn't do anything strenuous at all, the extent of my day was getting out of bed, moving to the couch, and vice versa.

By Saturday (I had it done on Monday), the pain was so overwhelming I couldn't sleep. I had spent $230 on concert tickets for the following day, and there was literally no way I was going to be able to make the drive or be able to stand for the periods of time required to enjoy it. Standing was rough, walking was difficult, and sleeping was near impossible. Queue up the ER visit, to go get an ultrasound and a few other things done to make sure I didn't have any torsion issues (I didn't, thankfully), but the end result was basically "Sometimes it needs more time." I went back to see the urologist and he repeated the same, gave me another week off of work, and refilled my prescriptions.

I didn't end up getting back to work for over 2 weeks, and things still weren't going that great, but I ended up getting a better job for the summer where I was sitting on my ass all day and I figured that was manageable. It was not. I ended up getting a second opinion from a different urologist in June because the pain hadn't subsided at all, and that's when I learned about the Post Vasectomy Pain Disorder, where some small percentage of people (<5%) just have chronic pain after their vasectomy. They don't know what causes it and they don't know how to fix it. They can try to reverse the vasectomy, but there's no guarantee that will work. Plus it defeats the purpose of getting it done in the first place. They can remove the epididymis (which was inflammed and causing most of the pain), but there's no guarantee that will work. Or as a last case resort you can have your testicles removed. I don't need to explain too much on that one, I hope. In any case, he advised against all options because if you're in pain, trying to solve pain with surgery tends to just lead to more pain, and no real results. He told me to give it a few more months.

It took 5. 5 months of near constant pain. Pain sleeping, pain walking around, pain doing things, pain during and after sex. I got almost nothing accomplished this summer, I had a lot of landscaping and other projects to take care of around the house to get some more areas for our gardens, and I couldn't work for longer than a half an hour at a time on any of them before the pain got too intense to work thru. Not to mention the post orgasmic pain. Lemme tell you fellas - there's nothing better than getting off and then immediately doubling over and laying in the fetal position because of your balls.

This has lead to other consequences with me. 5 months of vicodin (for the pain) and advil (for the inflammation) have left my stomach completely wrecked. I lost 15lbs in 2 weeks in October because I was unable to eat without vomiting. I was puking up water for awhile. It took 2 IV's to make it thru that first week. It's been almost 2 months since that started and I still only eat one meal a day, can't eat at work, and I've stopped eating out entirely. My diet consist mainly of toast and crackers now, with one actual "meal" a day, and it's small. Remember the part where I say I work a pretty physical job? Yeah. So I'm trying to do 3000+ calories worth of work off of sub 1000 calories a day. I dunno how much longer I'll be able to keep it up, clearly there's some changes coming in my future as a result of this.

The majority of people will have their vasectomy go fine. They will get it done on Friday and be back to work on Monday. I want to stress this part -- most people I talk to say it was no big deal. However, there is a non zero amount of people that do have complications, and they can be serious and far reaching. I have met a lot more of these people since my procedure as well. It's starting to look like somewhere in the neighborhood of 1/20 to 1/40 people have these kinds of troubles, and how long they have them for seems to vary widely.

I'm not saying don't get snipped. I'd still do it again, because it was the right move for me at the time. But I am saying be completely aware of the possible risks and plan for them. If you can't be out of work for up to a month, don't get it done. If you have commitments shortly after that date, don't get it done. If you're expecting to lay sod or hike the Amazon a month later, don't get it done. Research the risks, understand them completely, and then decide if it's still right for you. It probably is -- just don't go into it unprepared for what may happen. You can't guarantee it will be reversible, you can't guarantee it will go well. Plan for either outcome.

Current update:

My stomach and intestines are still paying for the aftermath of the vasectomy and the NSAID use (well, abuse would be a better word). They're getting better, slowly, but it's been 9 months now of paying the price for this decision. Also, my sex drive has dropped to near zero. I just don't care about it anymore. Nothing else has changed in my life, I'm just not chasing the wife around anymore. She offers to blow me and I turn it down in favor of sleep. It sucks. I don't know if it's hormonal, or if it's conditioned from the last 3/4 of a year in complete agony, but either way, I am just not that interested in anything anymore.

I never wanted kids. Ne-ver.

I had the 'no-scalpel' vasectomy. Instead of cutting a flap in your sack, they force/work/massage your vas deferens (the sperm conduit/tube) to a spot just under the skin at the base/center of your penis. Then they use a small pair of scissors to snip a tiny hole, and pop, the tube pops out. Cut, cauterize, work the other tube. No stitches, just a quick cauterize. 20 minutes. Maybe.

I sat on the couch for 2-3 days with ice on my balls and oxycodone in my blood. It felt like I got a mild-to-moderate kick in the balls during that time. Much quicker recovery time than the traditional vasectomy.

The doc said I needed to cum around 20 times and wait a week or three, then have a sperm-count test before he'd sign off on my sterility.

Cost? I had insurance. I might have had a nominal co-pay. But even if I didn't have insurance, it might have been $1,000-$2,000. Which is probably what I would pay in a few months of child support. You tell me if that's affordable or not.

That was....6-8 years ago. And no worries about knocking some chick up ever since. And bareback sex can't be beat. I'll still use a rubber the first time or two when I get down with a new chick, mostly to see what her reaction is (not concerned about a rubber the first time? mega-slut.).

1 - This was a two day thing. In my state, you have to have an initial consultation where you have to talk about the fact that YOU KNOW YOU WILL BE STERILE, and this is intended as a PERMANENT procedure. I am not making that last part up. If you're married, you need to have a signed note saying that your wife is aware of this. Again, doctor-shopping may help you avoid this.

A lot of others have talked about the procedure itself, so I'll just summarize mine: local anesthesia, no real pain during procedure itself, mild pain for a couple days afterward, and being careful not to hurt my balls. Shooting blanks. Looks/tastes like normal.

What others have NOT talked about is what to do with your women afterward. Here's how I do it.

First, never tell a woman you've got one. Some will freak out. So just don't mention it.

Second, keep wearing a condom with your ONS and plates. There are diseases, so just wrap it up.

Third, if your plate goes LTR with you (closed relationship), make sure she's on the pill before you stop using condoms. This will help prevent her asking questions.

Fourth, sex without condoms is amazing. Worth it just for that.

Finally, when she calls you up sobbing because she's pregnant, you can decide if you want zero drama and tell her about the V right away, or play it out for a few days/weeks just to have a great laugh in the end.

While I don't have first hand experience my father has had one done.

It costs roughly $1000 if you have it done privately. This is generally covered under most health plans however.

It takes around 4 - 6 weeks to heal. During this process erections are painful but this diminishes over the healing period. My father did the older procedure with the needle, scalpel, staple and cauterization. He had to take a week and a half off work.

However more modern techniques have shorter healing periods and use non invasive and topical numbing.

Procedure cost me $70 due to my insurance coverage. I got the snip and not the laser. It didn't really feel like it set me free. I already have children. I still have protected sex, because of STDs. I did it because my ex kept "forgetting" to take her BC. She left me before my I was completely healed. I don't tell any of the women I sleep with that I've had it done. I've heard many guys having the procedure done and back to work like nothing happened in three days. That was not my case.

The nurse checked my vitals and had me sign some papers. She verified I had compression shorts and told me to remove my pants and underwear and lay on the table after she leaves. I recommend wearing basketball shorts or track pants and a t shirt.

I lay on the table and the doctor told me this wouldn't hurt at all he does about 300 a year while he gently shaves my balls. I'd only feel a little pin prick and some tugging and he'd be done. That was complete bullshit. I was awake for the procedure sweating bullets and staring at the ceiling trying not to puke or flinch.

I did feel a pin prick and then a burning sensation in my right testicle. Some tugging as he cut open my sack and pulled out vas deferens through the hole. I then felt something like a mule kick in my stomach on the right side of my belly button and a white light enter my vision. This was the doctor clipping the vas deferens. Some more tugging as he clipped the cut ends of my vas deferens. This is where I tried not to vomit and sweat was rolling out of my forehead. I then watched his hand go up in the air with some string coming from the bottom of his fist. This was the doctor sewing up my sack.

The whole procedure that happened on my right was mirrored on my left - mule kicks and all. The doctor used some glue then some gauze and said he was done.

After the procedure I very carefully put on the compression shorts. Then the rest of my clothes and hobbled out to the lobby to sign more papers. It was embarrassing to walk/hobble from the office to my car, but at this point I didn't care I just wanted to get home.

I get in the car and place a bag of frozen peas on my crotch. Get home and stay on the couch for the day swapping bags of frozen peas. I stayed that way for the weekend and fended for myself as my loving wife who was also a nurse berated me for asking her to make me some food while I was resting on the couch.

The moving around was how I ended up pulling apart a suture and getting it infected. It hurt for weeks and I had to take some antibiotics for a week and for the infection to clear. My sack never really did swell up to an unmanageable size, but I swapped compression shorts for 7 days straight. I still feel shocks of pain if I sit just right and can feel about an inch gap between the vas deferens ends inside each testicle.

I'd do it again, but would do laser. I can't really tell the difference and I rarely feel any pain. There are some real horror stories out there, but luckily my story was tame compared to others. If you get it done try to go for a Friday and take the Monday off. Get someone to take care of you or get a small refrigerator near your couch/bed and fill it with food. Don't lift weights, run, or ride a bike for a couple weeks just to be safe. If you think you may want children in the future then freeze your sperm for future use.

Got mine done couple weeks ago. I am one of the few who had a slight complication. Not bad though. Started to get some swelling mass in my sack 5 days later. Went back and it was either a hematome or granuloma. Had to take anit-biotics and ibuprofen for two weeks. Went back two weeks later and it was more than half the size it was originally. Now, it's almost gone completely a month and half later. No pain though that was good. My first sample check is coming up, from what I"m reading 28 cum-count should be enough but some cases you need like 2 - 3 months to be completely cleared. Wear the jock straps for longer than you need to, trust me.

I've just come back home from having this op, three hours ago.

Fortunately for me I live in the UK so there is no cost for the procedure. It was the scalpel method.

The anaesthetic was the only painful part, it involved a needle into each bollock (yes, you read that right). Then two incisions for both the left and right side.

Easiest thing ever. My appointment was a at noon and I was home by 1. A little local, small incision, pull out one tube, snip, cauterize. Pull out other tube, snip, cauterize. Done. A little sore for a few days, but within a week or two no issues at all.

I'd had my kids (and was divorced), and girlfriend loved it. We were careful for a month or two, got the all clear and party!

I had the standard one 7 years ago, it reconnected or wasn't done correctly and 5 years later my wife ended up pregnant. I went back to the Urologist ended up seeing a different doctor (because the one who originally did mine retired). Who recommended a 'bi-lateral' (I think it was) vasectomy which included some exploratory. This meant I would be put completely out and he would do an invasive surgery, which essentially meant I he was going to cut me open and pull my nuts out onto the operating table. Anyway the surgery went good, he took a huge chunk (like 1 - 1.5 inches) of my vas out and then sealed it up. Recovery took about 2 weeks.

Fast forward to this past Tuesday, my wife wakes up to get the kids ready for school and complains about really bad cramps. I don't think to much of it - I get a phone call at 1 in the afternoon with her sobbing saying she thinks she just had a miscarriage WHAT THE FUCK?

I rush home and get her to the ER where they draw blood, do some exam stuff, get her cleaned out, etc. We tell the story of how she was on birth control since last September to help control her migraines, she stopped having her period after a while on the BC. The BC was starting to make her really puffy so she decided to quit taking it this past November, and she was apparently 6 weeks pregnant.

Yeah, so anyway she is currently recovering and dealing with really bad cramps and has some follow up tests next week to see what the hell is up. If I hadn't already had a failed vasectomy clearly I would jump to her cheating , but since she is a STAHM who has to watch a 2 year old and since this has happened once in the past already. I either have a 3rd testicle, or need to start buying lottery tickets.
