Hey ladies! This is my first ever post here. I would really appreciate any words of advice from someone wiser and better at handling friendships.
I'll just start by saying I've always been a bit more traditional when it comes to gender norms and all that, but my new circle of friends since my University life began have been the opposite. I also had a lot of trouble connecting to people before, so this is really my first time having close friends. They helped me through a really rough time and I'm eternally grateful for them. I used to be very cut-throat with people and it's something I'd like to avoid, since it obviously doesn't give me a good impression and is not a good habit to have in the long-run.
I like to think I've done a good job at keeping my frustration hidden, but there are times I want to block them and just be a lone wolf again. I'd like to seek any advice on how to contain such emotions when dealing with others?
Here are the latest instances that tickle the angry bone inside me:
1) They try to argue with me about "toxic masculinity".
Me telling them I like "masculine, macho men like Sylvester Stallone in Rocky" brings in a chorus of "eww". When I tell them I dislike paying for my meal on a date, and it immediately disqualifies a man in my eyes, they try to argue with me about it. It's even more frustrating they try to prove me wrong because we're all well aware I get the most male attention (because I really revamped myself, not because I'm "pretty"). I could teach them a few things, but I'm aware this dynamic energy between femininity/masculinity is not something you can force on others. I wish they could understand that I prefer such men because I am their polar opposite (does that make sense?).
2) One of them has this weird, older male friend who has no friends besides her.
For context, he's a decade older and a freshman. Nothing wrong with that, it's the things he's done as an older friend. He dropped a couple of subtle hints that he was interested in her, despite finding a girlfriend very soon after that (they broke up in 3 months). She made it clear to us she was weirded out by his subtle advances. He comes to her to talk about his ex and his life a lot, to the point she's texting him while we're on a video call together. She's whined about him enough times that I had to tell her to stop bringing him up as it was bothering/annoying me. I also feel guilty about putting up this boundary in our friendship. All of them disagree with me when I tell them it's strange an older man is relying on a girl fresh out of high school for socializing. So far, it seems they pity him because he's insecure about his age.
3) They argue with me when I tell them I am hesitant about being friends with someone who clearly has substance abuse issues.
I've known actual drug addicts and alcohol addicts, so I know firsthand how messy things get. I've also always been very anti-drugs, alcohol, smoking, you name it. My friends on the other hand know this girl who is clearly addicted to her juul and heavy partying. They try to change my mind with "not all" statements like "We know you've had a bad run-in with your ex-friends, but they're not all like that." The "not all" thing in particular is something they do a LOT, and it really annoys me sometimes.
Sorry this is kinda long! I wasn't quite sure how to express this without the 3 examples listed.
Thank you in advance <3
