These men realize this law was passed to keep trafficked women out of jail, and not for them, right? Of course not, that would require having more than two brain cells 🙄

If I understand correctly, NYC will no longer be prosecuting prostitutes--it doesn't say anything about the men purchasing sex.

"Black, Brown and East Asian women and girls, immigrants, and LGBTQ+ people have been disproportionately harmed by laws like 'loitering for the purpose of prostitution' and 'unlicensed practice of a profession' – a charge that is often used to make arrests in massage businesses," Judy Harris Kluger, executive director of the legal services provider Sanctuary for Families, said in a statement.

She added that the district attorney is making "critical changes in its approach to the sex trade and the way our communities support those most at risk of exploitation."

The district attorney's office said it had identified 5,994 cases in its records — dating back to 1976 — that involved an open bench warrant as well as a top charge of either prostitution, unlicensed massage or "loitering for the purpose of prostitution," all misdemeanors.

Of those, 878 are prostitution cases and 36 are related to unlicensed massage. The remaining 5,080 listed "loitering for the purpose of prostitution" as the top charge, and Vance asked the court to dismiss those as well. He said his office has not prosecuted that crime since 2016 and noted it was removed from the state's penal code earlier this year.

I think it's insane women are arrested for being prostitutes. It's the men purchasing women that should be arrested. This policy seems like a step forward in that regard. Unless I'm misunderstanding this.

Decriminalization is tricky because decriminalizing prostitution is one part of the Nordic Model which has had a great deal of success in harm reduction across various countries. However, it shifts the criminalization to the purchasers of sex which apparently NYC is not doing. So while on one hand the decision benefits (overwhelmingly) women, it's immensely halfassed because it's not going after the people who create the demand for prostitution in the first place.

All a halfassed implementation of the Nordic Model achieves is less fear than ever from the johns, and more of a demand and trafficked women. Good job, libfems!

NYC is a misogynists playground. I like how the decision of decriminalizing sex work was for the purpose of “helping traffic victims and helping them find resources to get out of sex work if they want to.”

Let’s be real here, a massive majority of women who are prostituting in NYC aren’t trafficked into it. They come from well to do backgrounds and flock to NYC in attempts to live out their SATC dreams and sell themselves to try and maintain an affluent lifestyle. Sure, there’s still many women who are truly down on their luck and trafficked and pandering on the streets, but that isn’t the real issue here. The real issue is catering to the desired of high end prostitutes who charge upwards of 2k per outcall to their finance banker clients. This is all about protecting men in these high paying industries in the city.
