I will start this post off by saying that I am a very sensitive person. A lot of things make me uncomfortable, angry or sad very easily. Now that being said, I don't expect all media to be tailored to my sensitivity level. So:

I have always, since childhood liked "geeky" and "artsy" things. When I say geeky I don't mean it in a bad way nor do I mean it in a "different from other girls" way, quite a lot of these are common. Movies, music, videogames, comics, books, writing, drawing, you name it and I probably enjoyed it.

The problem started when I hit puberty around 12-13 years of age. I discovered anime. I had watched pokemon as a kid, but it didn't register in my mind as a genre or anything like that. At that time it was a huge discovery, I loved the art style and wacky stories. The longer I watched it the deeper I got into the community, I started seeing my male friends watching it and it all seemed fine. Until I started waking up to how many anime fans, men in particular were predatory and porn sick. I would regularly be hit on by adult men, be asked for nudes, be asked to put on "knee socks and panties" or a maid costume, my male friends started using me for sex etc. This was all made worse by the fact that I dyed my hair blue since I was 14, until around recently because I became uncomfortable with being associated to e girls. Because of my blue hair, gothic clothing style and slightly chubby frame, I would be sexualized to hell and back. (don't even get me started on the whole "big titty goth gf" trend.. ew)

I started seeing how much anime sexualises women and children. Even if an anime was family friendly to begin with, the fandom would sexualize it themselves. NOBODY seemed to be seeing what I was seeing, and I would be bullied out of the fandom for saying something. It got to the point where all geeky stuff I liked started showing obvious signs of misogyny that I hadn't seen before. It was EVERYWHERE! In movies, in games, in comics, in music videos.. -half naked women -sexist tropes -normalization of porn and other sex work -sexual violence -unrealistic beauty standards -little to no variety in female character design (especially age, race and weight) etc etc etc

I felt like no matter what I did, I had a hard time finding games and movies that I could still enjoy without seeing something frustrating and hurtful. To this day I mostly consume western children's media like Disney, because it's the only thing I can trust, and even that isn't always true. The most frustrating thing about it is that everyone I try to talk to reacts like I'm crazy and sex negative. ESPECIALLY the women who like anime. I can't stand women who do lewd anime cosplay and feed the hyper sexualization of women and girls. I can't be the only one who sees how many leftist women in general advocate for sex work. I feel as though they have no self awareness about their own internalized male gaze, self sexualization and internalised misogyny.

Anime is becoming more mainstream, which means that I have to see it involuntarily all the time on social media. Mindless masses consume this crap and will defend it to their grave. I don't trust anyone who tells me they like anime, because it means they most likely don't care about the sexism or even enjoy it (and are ok with openly admitting that).

Any tips on how to cope? Does anyone else see where I'm coming from? I feel so alienated and ignored. I'm sick and tired.

EDIT: Cartoons and anime I CAN recommend: Sailor moon, Attack on titan, Aggretsuko, My love story, any Ghibli movie, Avatar the last airbender, Code Lyoko, Netflix's She-Ra, Gravity Falls, Regular Show, Adventure Time, Spongebob Squarepants (yes, lol), Tintin, W.I.T.C.H. and Winx

Some if not most of these have SOME problem that I listed above, but aren't sexual at least. Also can you tell that I'm a European :D
