I'm at about $40k with another $40k on appeal.

The fact is that all of that discovery done on assets, the lawyers read too. So they know how much is at stake, and how much is available for them to squeeze.

My total divorce cost me around 50k in California. My ex wife spent around 60k from what she put in to the court. Some attorneys are more expensive then others. Some pad the bill more then others as well. Just be aware their primary goal has little to do with you, it's that Bentley sitting in the driveway of that expensive house more likely. Most attorneys maximize conflict in order to increase billable hours. Also, the first thing you do is give them your finances and, I suspect they have a formula for how much they think they can get from you.

I would just be trying to get a clean break no alimony let her have the rest maybe keep enough for a down-payment on an apartment or a house and walk away stress is how women kill.

I spent $8k and my ex spent about $20k on a divorce that settled in mediation. My guy didn't pad hours, farmed out busy-work (financials spreadsheets, documentation etc) to his lower-hourly-rate associate ($250/hr vs. $450/hr) and I was careful not to constantly call about every little issue and just mostly sent emails to the associate attorney. I think the ex called a whole bunch more and her attorney padded the shit out of her hours and ended up costing way more despite a nominally lower hourly rate than mine. Your attorney is your employee - you need to manage them, not the other way around.

Edit: Saw your update - you need to demonstrate your child's ties to the current community, family there etc and how staying with you there would preserve those ties given how heavily you've been involved with the child's activities/schooling up til now. You've been heavily involved, right? It also wouldn't hurt to point out how your STBX is putting her own needs before the child's by moving her away from her father so that she can be with the mother's paramour. You also need to be starting to think about jobs etc wherever it is your ex wants to move the child - if you lose the move-away case you need to move local to your child as well and get equal parenting time. You cannot be a real father from 2000+ miles away.

This was eye-opening for me to watch. But what I learned is that if you can pay, it can keep going.

Depends what is happening- a mate spent 125k and ended up representing himself as ex kept filing false reports of abuse towards her and children - ex didn't even get punished when finally came out that the stories were false- just granted 50-50 and the perjury by his ex was ignored without punishment

Sounds like the attorney is fleecing you. 65k is a lot to not see the finish line. Grant it, I don't know crap. I'm only at the beginning of the journey in Cali.. Maybe consult another attorney to verify his moves....

My whole divorce for an 11 year marriage tan $5k on each side. That included two visits to court, one for temporary orders and then a 3 hour trial. We couldn’t agree on anything so I said “let the judge decide.”
My ex threatened to file an appeal, because she was denied alimony, but she didn’t go through with it because an appeal would have cost another $5k minimum she didn’t have.

Not a lawyer here but I'd be shocked if the judge granted her requrest to take the kid across the country since you've been parenting 50/50. Unless I'm missing something, I wouldn't be too concerned about that aspect. Otherwise, yes, marriage and divorce both put men at a disadvantage. You're willing to give up 50% of assets and sound like a reasonable guy and a good Dad. Alimony shouldn't be in play, and child support is equation based. Attorneys do not want you to resolve it or be amicable. I'd be pushing him to wrap it up or that you'll seek alternate counsel. Best of luck to you, brother. Hang tough. Brighter days ahead.
