A conspiracy theory of a hate movement. These are quite common. For example the Nazis had the "ZOG" (Zionist Occupation Government) which they pretended existed for Jews to secretly run the world to dominate the Aryan race. The "patriarchy" conspiracy theory says that all men belong to a secret society of males that organizes to oppress and attack all women. This secret society makes sure that society is run for the benefit of men and to hurt women. All men participate in it.

However there's also the original simple anthropological term meaning of the word. That just means a society where the ruling positions are taken by people who are fathers. In this sense until recently all known societies were patriarchal. Though (ironically) some feminists have at various times tried to claim one or two little known primitive tribes to be "matriarchies". This claim always turns out to be false and I suppose we're about run out of "lost tribes" of primitive people left to contact these days.

You often see feminists use the Motte and Bailey rhetorical trick (or Bait and Switch) to defend the first meaning of the word by pretending they only meant the second meaning of the word.

Patrilineal succession of power and assets. Now, modern feminist think this is unfair(which it was) but they only really wanna take this part of it while completely ignoring the fact that men took majority of responsibility in old school societies as well. Movement here is about evening things out because while women fight for taking a share of the wealthiest, most powerful men lives lower class men are left with no power/assets and all the responsibility which makes us socially expendable.

'Patriarchy' tends to be whatever people need it to be to reinforce their point of view. People often use different definitions throughout a discussion. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Equivocation)

I think the most widely used meaning is a society that benefits men at the expense women.

Other common meanings that people use are:

A society that values men and masculinity over women and femininity
Enforcement of gender roles where men are dominant and women are submissive.

People often defer to the dictionary definition, which is something like "A society where men are in charge", but then make big assumptions about what that means, which more closely resemble the above definitions.

Edit: If you want to know what someone means when they’ve been talking about patriarchy, ask them to explain it without using the word “patriarchy”. If they struggle to do that they probably don’t really understand it themselves or can’t tell what they really think.

I don't believe that it's an actual thing.

Women have a very strong in-group bias that favours other women. Men however have an out-group bias that favours women. Women are more prone to seeing other women as part of "the sisterhood" or whatever you'd call it, even complete strangers. You can see this by the backlash and shaming from strangers someone gets for upsetting a woman even unintentionally regardless of context: "you misogynist", "you sexist" - flip the genders and suddenly not even other men give a shit about the upset man, unless they personally know him. Men on the other hand are individualistic to a fault. We don't see ourselves as one big group. We do form close knit groups but only with other men that we actually know, male strangers aren't perceived as "one of us". I don't identify with a random man simply for us both being male. That is a big difference between men and women.

Both men and women can be faulty of applying our own perceptions onto the other. Imagine a guy sending unsolicited dickpicks because he himself would love for a woman to send him nudes unprompted, not realising that women definitely don't like that. Women with their strong in-group bias tend to think men also have a strong in-group bias. Women think that if they had the ability, they'd enforce themselves as the "top" gender (cf constant feminist bias in media, laws written with a female bias) so why wouldn't men? From that you get the concept of patriarchy (in the context of men controlling the world, not of systems of inheritance which goes by the same name just in case some smart arse brings that up) which is a nebulous conspiratal idea that it is men who control and oppress women. I'd go as far to say that promoting the idea of the patriarchy benefits a feminist agenda; gaining virtue and legitimacy via presenting itself as the victim and that its actions are reactionary and morally required. Simply disagreeing that the patriarchy exists is enough to get shamed for since disagreeing with the idea threatens the feminist narrative - just look at the comments on any reddit thread getting downvoted for not believing in the patriarchy. It's like how some nutjobs blame a mysterious undefined group of Jews for the world's issues, or how some flat earthers blame "the government" for a coverup. In these cases the "enemy" is always vague and never refers to an actual group of people

I'd argue that women's in-group bias is how feminism took off like it did since it just expands upon the concept of women as a group, and how men's out-group bias is why the MRM struggles to win even most men over - we tend to not give a shit about other men. If the patriarchy was real then the MRM would be considerably more successful but in reality it can be social suicide to say you even support it

As an additional note. I don't believe that any of this is a conscious choice by women who believe in the patriarchy. I think it's likely just a subconscious by-product of the "Women Are Wonderful" effect that has become quite exaggerated.

It’s one of their foundational beliefs used to construct the philosophy of second wave/radical “feminism”.

The first belief is that “women are oppressed”, this cannot be questioned or reasoned with, feminism need this as it’s starting point. Without this belief it would have no need to exist and so it’s the basis for everything that follows.

If then “women are oppressed”, the question becomes who are they being oppressed by and why?

So next feminists claim women are universally oppressed by men, who wish to control them whilst making their own lives better/privileged.

But how are men doing this? This is where the concept of the “patriarchy” needs to be invoked.

The “patriarchy” then is the system of oppression by men which is baked so deeply in to society that’s it’s literally everywhere to the point of being invisible.

With with this, any negative outcome whatsoever is the patriarchy (and by extension) men’s fault, and this cannot be questioned, it just “is”.

It's how the system is based off of generations of trad men, for example, women are given custody of children more because they're seen as 'caretakers' and 'nuturing', rather than seeing parenting as a skill, it is correlated with a specific gender. This actively hurts both genders as the patriarchy encourages men to hide their emotions, hence not getting help, which is why there is higher suicidal rates for men, it encourages a type of masculinity that is toxic, now this isnt to say that masculinity is inherently toxic but rather the sort that the patriarchy encourages is. Masculinity is far from toxic, it is rather a trait that either biological gender can adopt. I think that MRAs and feminists have a lot in common but they fail to see that because of resentment and insecurities (on both sides).

Short hand for saying "all men". It felps feminists bond together against an invisible foe that's holding them all back and it's something to do with men.

Fun stoy in "women in tech". Had a young woman work for me in the tech industry. We went to a conference where new hardware was being announced and discussed. I asked her what she thought, she said there was lots of men there. That was it!

She also got to the conference 30 mins late missing the opening key note speech. I later read her blog where she was scathing about the number of men in tech and why there's so few women. I was stunned:

She got to the conference 30 mins late so she didn't seem to interetsed in what we were doing and missed the crucial keynote speech
She had literally nothing to say about the pre-release hardware we were shown
Rather than network and make connections with other delegates she chose to sit down and write a blog about why the tech world is full of men and how the patriarchy holds women back

In my experience if women actually took the opportunities presented to them they would get much further in the world. I've tried to lead the horse to water but the horse spent most of it's time blaming me for why it wasn't getting any water. Perhaps it's not actually an invisible patriarchy which holds women back? Untrendy thought I know.

Hmm, me neither, but I'm sure men do have this conspiracy. Obviously, men aren't very good at it, or there would not be five times more male criminals in jail than there are female criminals; we would have a longer life span, not vice versa; we'd be getting better health care, not worse; it would be our genitals that were legally protected, not women's.

The more I think of it, if this Patriarchy conspiracy really did exist, it's not something women should be complaining about. And if they don't stop complaining it just might start to exist, in which case they could then really have something to worry over.

Patriarchy basically means where the head of a family, community, or society is male. Most of the desicions-making, work is done by men. Men hold the positions of power. It worked for most of the time throughout history, but it's obsolete now. In my country,India, and many developing or conservative countries, it's still dominant and can be easily seen. In my opinion, it takes some freedom away from females, and objectifies and dehumanises men. Feminists are not wrong in saying that patriarchy is root of problems, but it isn't the root of all the minor and major inconveniences they face, blaming everything on patriarchy. Patriarchy worked wonderfully when humans started settling in places. Because then masculine values like protecting homes, hunting,etc became vital to survival. In many nomadic human societies, and animal species like elephants, matriarchy is observed. So ig you see the pattern.
