The article and AIHW report omit important details from their headlines. The male prison population in Australia increased by 45% (an increase of 12,500), while the female prison population increased by 64% (an increase of 1,400). An additional 1,400 women in prison is characterised as a crisis, a national shame, a tragedy that is inflicted on women unjustly. An additional 12,500 men is prison is ignored.

The report and article stress that the social determinants experienced by these women, makes them victims of the system. The same social determinants were experienced men in prisons, but this is ignored.

This is nothing more than sexist pigs researching people who are like themselves, while ignoring the big picture, the real problem. These sexist pigs believe that they are entitled to ignore the needs of people who are not like themselves, that it's ok to be selectively blind to need, injustice and suffering on the basis sex, race and religion.

The Guardian is a hopelessly biased rag read by the woke left. Its misandry and bigotry are legend. The AIHW is an Australian government funded organisation intended to research epidemiological data on the health and welfare of ALL Australians. However, the organisation is dominated by a radical feminist agenda that treats the health needs of men and boys as trivial, and the health needs of women and girls as primary. This is evinced most clearly in the continuing practice of dehumanising men and boys in their reports by referring to them as "males" (commonly used in reference to animals), while using the more humanised and empathetic terms of "women" and "girls", and the blatant sexism in the report above.

In Australia, researchers have identified two possible causes for the increase: either women are suddenly committing more serious crimes and therefore getting more jail time, or laws and policing practices have shifted so that minor crimes are now met with more severe penalties.

Did they not consider another reason, that judges are finally applying the law equally (well sorta) to men and women.

That means that MANY thousands more men were sent to prisons and the reason the percentages are higher is because there were so few women in prison to begin with.

Glad to know most men who are in prison never experienced childhood trauma, physical assaults, rough sleeping, mental illness, or alcohol or drug addiction. /s

I remember talking to a woman in (I believe) Norway about prison rape in the U.S. and mentioned PREA stats. She told me they didn't have that problem in her country. I asked her if they didn't have the problem or if no one ever looked into it to find out. She admitted no one ever looked into it.

That's probably why no one ever looks into the back grounds if men entering prison. It's easier to pretend that they came from rosey situations and are just evil. Is it just me or is it odd that they've chosen to make their point by highlighting the story of a woman who's in prison for killing her partner and credits prison for saving her life?

Man, this is really poorly written. There's no cohesive flow at all. It's just, "random set of disjointed statistics", "quote that doesn't relate", "pointless snippet of story of someone who went to prison", "another unrelated quote," "more disjointed statistics", etc. If I didn't know this was from a propaganda rag, I would be honestly confused about what the article was trying to get across. It's too disorganized to either inform or persuade. I like this random quote in the middle,

This article (inadvertently) gives credence to the idea that criminal justice should be restorative for all inmates, by leveraging the sympathy readers have for women, including women prisoners. The article is unduly sympathetic, in that it provides an excuse for the anonymous inmate who slept with a 15 year old boy (She came out of an abusive marriage).
