My boyfriend of a year broke up with me a few days ago because I am too nice to him. He told me I'm the sweetest girl he's ever met, that I've treated him so well and made him feel like a man. He said I set the bar really high for any girl that comes after me. But that he wants someone to throw things back at him and put him in his place. I am so confused. I thought I was doing everything right. :( He is very RP naturally and always said how he hates women who are too controlling/combative. I'm his first LTR, do you think that has something to do with it?

He still wants me in his life and said I'm his motivation for working hard. He still wants to take me shopping as well. Can you all help me decipher this?

Any words of advice are much appreciated. Thank you ladies so much.

Edit: We are college students, so we're pretty young. I don't know if this could be a factor.

Edit 2: Also, he wants me to come over next week so we can make dinner. Good idea or no? Should I just cut him off? I care about him a lot and I know that my support really helps him. I don't want to deprive him of that but maybe I should??

UPDATE: He called tonight to talk about things, and I pressed the question a little more. He said he wants someone who he can compete with, and who will challenge him and be sarcastic back to him when he makes comments. He recognizes that that's not my personality and doesn't want to try to change me, but doesn't want to be with me in a relationship. He said he still cares about me and wants our friendship in his life. But obviously that will take some time for me. I feel like I have a little more closure now, and can start to heal. Thank you all so much for your kind words and encouragement!
