Point out that white missionaries settling in Africa put a stop to the practice of leaving infants to die of exposure. These white missionaries, many of whom were men doing big, manly things like building schools, stopping murders and stopping the murder of babies, are the colonials that "teacher" and that book attempt to vilify.

Things Fall Apart is more about the cultural changes in Africa as a result of whitey colonizing and putting an end to barbarism within his sphere of influence. It is much less about the Big Bad Male.

I would potentially record the next class in secret, much of what you describe is dismissed as conspiratorial nonsense by the media but because more and more people have the foresight to record the evidence they're realising just how bad things are.

I don't think you're going to get anywhere with somebody like this, you could potentially file a complaint with the principal but they may try to punish you for it if things are that bad which is why I suggest recording everything.

Your teacher should be teaching about literature, she is clearly using the classroom as her own personal indoctrination centre. Whether or not you do anything about it is going to be down to you. I can understand wanting to keep your head down in this environment because it does sound pretty bad if the whole class is affected by her bullshit but even in the worse case scenario I would seriously consider recording everything, store it for later and then release it to the public and perhaps local news when you finally leave.

This way there's no way for the school to try and punish you or prematurely end your education because you dared to have the wrong opinion.

Yes, don't. You have nothing to gain here. Pick your battles wisely. Bite the bullet and go along with it. A school year might seem endless at your age, but later you will realise that's it's just a blink of an eye.

Be warned though: The state of cognitive dissonance (google it) takes it toll, so make sure be very aware and intentional about it. Say to yourself:

I'm going into this class now. The teacher is bat shit insane and I have nothing to gain from (most likely unsuccessfully) trying to change her views or that of the class, so I'll keep as quiet as possible in order to not damage my future. It will be over soon enough.

This is not a general advise on how to act in all situations of life, it's specific to this specific classroom situation.

I had to read that, and a speech by Achebe. The guy is a racist. He has so much hate in his heart, how can you hate so much and be able to love anything? The guy is a sad, miserable and hateful person.

As you read his work, the lesson to learn is what not to be.

You could just ask questions:

masculinity in and of itself is the force that drives the atrocious behavior of this character as well as most men throughout history

What evidence do you have for this.

She asserted that this masculine desire for power and dominance is the root of evil

Are you stating that as an opinion or a fact? (If fact then it requires evidence, if opinion then is everyone free to hold a different opinion? etc.)

By not making any statements and only asking questions you can push her into tying herself in knots all by herself. Just give her some rope.

Try to see it as an exercise in learning the very useful skill of Socratic argument and not giving opponents either cause or opportunity for attacking you.

This is a good chance to talk to your classmates, I bet many of them are feeling the same way but are afraid to say anything. These are the kinds of experiences that can actually represent can opportunity to come together. I think silent MRAs are everywhere, they're just waiting for someone else to speak first.

You have a well-thought out reasoned response. It will eat you alive to leave that class and not tell her how you feel. Trust me I've been there. I had a PhD professor assign the most ridiculous reading assignment in a graduate business course. In short, it made hints at genetic traits belonging only to white men that force them to oppress women and minorities. I know, absolutely insane. And this was over ten years ago.

Long story short, I called her out on it in front on the class. Much like you, I presented what I thought was a well-thought out respectful response. We certainly disagreed on the issue. But in the end she graded me fairly. The last day or so of the class she made a comment in jest about how badly I wanted out of her class. I asked her how badly dog she want me out of her class. We both had a laugh. But it's scary to think she of still shaping young minds.

The book is actually a condemnation of pre-colonial African culture. If you want to throw the femenazi into a tizzy take her arguments and rephrase them as an attack on African culture, using Western culture as a counterpoint against the nastier parts of the book.

Use her own words against her.

Well you could make a sexual harassment claim against the teacher for creating an educationally "hostile environment" (use that phrase) for men and so if the school allows this to continue they are in violation of title IX of the civil rights act which says everyone has a right to an equal education free of (sex and racial) discrimination (at least in federally funded schools such as yours presumably if you're in the USA in a regular school).

Or you could talk to the teacher and say you were thinking of making such a complaint.

70% of those in prison grew up with a single mother. 95% of school shooters grew up with a single mother. Nearly every metric used to describe children improves significantly with a father in the home (google it). State these statistics, then remind the teacher that the character in Things Fall Apart grew up with a horrible father.

It's not masculinity that is the problem, but lack of it.

Also, his father was extremely lazy and refused to work. Ask the teacher about her opinion of men who refuse to do their traditional role, i.e. be a bread winner.

“Things Fall Apart” is actually a superb book. It’s a shame that your teacher has to spoiled it for you by putting her own sociopolitical slant on it. I think you’ve got the analysis quite right, though... it’s an example of a psychologically disturbed man trying to grapple with rapid change and failing. Just wait until you finish the book!

Tell your teacher that "Toxic Masculinity" is the side effect of preparing boys to be soldiers. How do you get a 19 year old child to be willing to die and kill other 19 year old children? "Child soldier" is a misnomer. Most soldiers have been children.

We forbid young boys from showing emotion in daily life because our society cannot afford its warrior children to turn and run during a battle. Cowards get a coward's death. Execution.

I actually see her & your point. Your definition of masculinity doesnt appear to be toxic even if you already made some misguided statements in relation to it, you claimed we have the rights we have today bcz of men who are masculine, but thats just so wrong. On so many levels. And she isnt wrong with what shes saying either in essence, there is that group of abusive men who abuse because of toxic masculinity leading them to that, so men who have low-selfesteem who over-value their ego and lash out with perceived threats to their ego in ways that are toxic, malicous and sometimes deadly. But thats just one group of people, its not the core of evil, there are enough men who abuse others : both other men and women, & masculinity sure as hell isnt why in all these cases of abuse, though most of them still do have ego issues & entitlement which are associated with toxic masculinity. That being said titling one abusive group as the root of all evil is dismissing other people that do not fit the criteria even if they are abusive, in a way its a dangerous notion to spread.There are many many types of abusers, both male & female. And therefore toxic masculinity cannot be solely to blame, like, shes right, its bad & leads to abuse, its just not encompassing all instances of abuse.
