In the UK we have a serious shortage of medical school places, with the result that more than half of male applicants with the required grades are rejected. As we have seen, many women who take up medical school places subsequently work part-time and, on the whole, tend to avoid A&E.

Its worth analyzing why men arent choosing this profession anymore, if theres a skew in the unemployment/underemployment, what the results are of patients in those contexts, etc. Are they instead going into computer science/technology/engineering/etc for instance? Is there something thats changed in the talent development culture for medicine? Are there different incentives? etc.

This article is from 2014 and they're talking about numbers from 2012. Much time has passed since then, and probably nothing has been done to address this problem. On the contrary, boys are even less adequately encouraged and promoted in education I bet.

Indeed, in this age group, 61 per cent of doctors are now women and 39 per cent men. In the age group 30 to 50 years, over the same period, the number of female doctors increased by 24 per cent compared with 2 per cent for males. In this age group, men still outnumber women by 54 per cent to 46 per cent — but that ratio will soon reverse.

I fear this gender imbalance is already having a negative effect on the NHS.

And the male Doctors end up making more money over their life on average. The patriarchy is still strong with this one. Maybe we should make males work less so the wage gap decreases. /s
