The first place I rented was a house with 2 other girls. I paid $800 for a 1 room guest house. I thought great. They also said that utilities would be split between 3 and I figured cool. No it wasn't. 1 month in and I saw the water and electric/gas bill. Wtf?! There's no way we could have used that much. It was fucking November in cali. I let the first month go and figured maybe it was a fluke and the addition of me made the costs go up. Month 2. Again around the same amount. I had taken note of my usage and it was minimal at best. I go to talk to them and find out that they run the ac all day every day. When it gets too cold they open the doors and windows to let the cold air out while the ac is still running!! As for why the water bill was so high? Apparently they were taking separate baths every day and washing their cars every time a speck of dust landed. I had found the hose still running a few times just watering the grass on a low stream a few days after one of them had washed her car. I left after 3 months. That $800/month was in reality closer to $1200/month.

I have a kinda similar story.

When I was 20 and a junior in college, I moved into a house just off campus with a girl I was sorta friends with, call her Becca. It was a big house that her grandfather owned and he was charging ridiculously low rent for his special granddaughter. Her best friend told me that when Becca was single, she became her pseudo boyfriend. Basically that Becca was a high-maintenance girl and when she was single she would try to get attention some other way (see also her grandpa, and her step-dad paid her other bills).

When we moved in, all was fine. She had a boyfriend. I quickly realized her boyfriend was her complete bitch. Sometimes I'd find him in the house and she wasn't there, and he was doing her laundry or cleaning her room. She would blow up and yell and scream at him once a month or so. I recall her telling me how she might reward him with sex in a few months, and how she preferred getting back rubs to sex.

In the time I knew her, I saw her with 3 boyfriends, all 3 of them were dudes for which she was out of their league, at least in the visuals department, i.e. she was pretty attractive and was dating these kinda ugly dudes who would then be her slave or do anything for her because they couldn't believe they could get such a hot girl. I guess that explains why she was rarely if ever rewarding them with sex, she was probably not even attracted to these dudes.

The place had three bedrooms, and then a big ass dank, partially finished basement. She had a friend move in, but rather than letting him take the other proper bedroom, she kept that as her "office" (she was also ~20 and a college student btw) and he moved in to one of those basement rooms that didn't even have a door on it.

But all was basically fine... until she dumper her boyfriend / slave.

With him gone and no more fawning attention she became a toddler. She started hanging out in my room, begging for attention, pretending to be sick, asking me to drive her around or pick things up for her. But since I'd been warned about this by her best friend (who had since had a falling out), I saw it coming. I also saw how you could be her boyfriend, do her laundry and clean her room and all that and she'd still withhold sex, so what the hell was in this for me? It really made her mad that I was not giving in to lavish her in attention.

Since her slave wasn't around to clean up after her, suddenly she decided that we (meaning me and her friend that she put in the basement) needed to do chores. Rent was hella cheap, so I was totally fine with doing some chores, but she whipped up this ridiculous set of chores that had to be done every week, with the obvious but also things like "wax all of the floors," "dust the entire house," "clean the bathrooms." Clearly you don't need to wax floors or dust the house every single week, and I list the bathroom there because I had my own bathroom, but I was being assigned to clean the other bathroom too.

See, she wasn't looking for a simple "let's keep the house not gross" compromise, she knew rent was super cheap and that it was her grandfathers, so she acted like she was our landlord and wanted us to be her little slaves now that her boyfriend was gone.

Needless to say, it wasn't kept spotless to her liking, so she would have a reason now to yell and scream at us once a week.

Her basement friend moved out, and she replaced him with a new guy. She put someone in her "office" at some point, and despite getting the treatment of actually having a room, he left in like 8 weeks because of her screaming (despite how incredibly cheap it was).

She kept trying to get attention from me, but I was less and less obliging. Then I got a girlfriend, and that really pissed her off. If she could hear us have sex, without fail, within an hour or so she would be screaming at somebody or slamming doors.

I was also more distracted now that I had a girlfriend and was spending lots of time at her place, so I wasn't keeping up with my "chores" apparently. I come home to her telling me she wants me out by July 1 so her other friend can move in to my room, this is May 10th. So I was like, fine, started looking for new roommates. I got something lined up for July 1. Then on about May 20th, I get a new note saying she wanted me out by June 1. She's trying to give me 10 days notice to find a new place.

I went to her room to tell her I would be out by July 1, that I had already made arrangements for that. She started yelling and screaming about how she would throw my stuff outside, she would have me evicted, she would make my life a living hell, there is no lease, I never signed anything therefore I have no rights, etc.

I said, July 1.

Then I went and read up on tenant law. Turns out that if you don't sign a lease, it doesn't matter, you still have rights, it's basically the same as having a month-to-month lease. Legally the owner/landlord has to give a full rental period's notice in writing.

So I went and told her, hey, July 1, I'll be gone, but if you mess with my stuff, if you try to evict me, I will be calling the cops, and they will side with me. She threw a toddler fit, but then June 1 came and she didn't do shit.

I also realized that she's not the landlord or the owner, her grandfather is, in fact, she pays rent to him just as we all did. So she had no right to issue an eviction notice anyway, her dearest grandfather (who never came by) had to do it. And since it was now June 2nd, and I'd yet to actually been given any legit notice in writing, and it required a full rental period of notice, it meant that even if dearest grandpa sent me a notice on June 2nd, we were already part way through the June-rental period, so the earliest date they could make me leave would be August 1st (after one full, July, rental period).

So a few days into June she started bitching at me about something else, and I mentioned this to her, that I could legally stay till at least August 1st now because I'd never been given a real notice, and that her note giving me a 10 day notice was super illegal.

She screamed about it, but then panicked and I could tell she thought I was actually going to try to stay till August 1, but fuck that, I was getting the hell out of there June 30th, but I never told her I had actually made arrangements or that I was moving out, I kept telling her that I could stay till August 1, and as July 1st was approaching I reminded her that if grandpa didn't send me a legit notice in writing by July 1, then I was clear till September 1.

I moved out on June 30th tho, still never got a notice from grandpa.
