It's a nice to feel like you could dump someone on the spot like that. But it's simply not the reality of most people's lives. 10 seconds ago you felt like you'd spend the rest of your lives together, and now you're heart broken. You might want to immediately break up, but in reality it won't be enough to throw your time together in the trash.

Emotions aside, there's finances usually involved. You're both on the lease. You put your name down on that car loan they got. You can't afford to live alone because you budgeted your expenses assuming you'd always have their paycheck to rely on.

Most people in serious long term relationships can't just immediately end it on a whim without fucking up their own life.

It IS that easy though. God knows I am a hypocrite about clean breakups but each "I got cheated on" breakup I've had has been an instant shit out the door. Its the "I don't really want to be with her anymore" ones that really took time.

Regardless. Never put them on the lease. Or don't be on theirs. Don't buy stuff with them. Be ready to lose anything you gifted instantly. Twice I've kicked out, and once I left. When I left I simply called my boss and told him the truth. "Hey man, I just found out my girl friend is cheating on me, I need a day off to load up and leave while shes at work." He asked me if I could do it the next day. So I did. That night i angry fucked her, finished up, and went to sleep without a word. "Is something wrong?" was the only thing she asked me.

Burn the bridge as hard as you can. Otherwise you go back. Too many people want to seem like the good person in the relationship, but when you get cheated on you shouldn't care.

Don't buy stuff w them? Don't put them on the lease? What about marriages? Do you plan to NEVER find a partner in which you share SOME things? What if you have children? Or buy a dog together? When you split are you going to cold-blooded towards your children/dog as week? Never purchase anything with your partner towards your life together so that if she maybe/ inevitably cheats you can just chuck them out the door?

I'm just trying to be realistic. It's one thing to be in a relationship and have, for example, your own bank account and large purchases (you don't have to halfsies on that kitchen table). I'll be celebrating my 10 years in June and while we both have our own separate bank accounts, we also have a joint account. SO pays for the car but we split rent, etc. we've lived together for about 6 years so when we moved into this place it would have been strange (and frankly "not fair") if just one of us footed the bill entirely for rent, water, gas, electric, internet etc.

Not trying to sound like a dick. Just giving my opposing view to your response. That's all.

It TOTALLY is her thinking he wouldn't sleep with anyone else. She even says it. She says he stays in all night playing video games and watching netflix. She doesn't think he would find anyone else to sleep with him. She figures she can go to Europe, be a slut for a few months, and then come back to an awesome relationship.

In my younger days a similar thing happened to me. I was dating a chick and things got rough, but she didn't want to break up because I was an awesome guy. She said she just wanted to date other people and still be with me. In my young naive mind I thought this sounded awesome. I had 4 other girls crawling all over me at work, and I was faithful so I had to tell them no. Enter my g/f saying she wants to see other people but still be together.

I told each of these 4 girls at the same time what was up. It didn't take long. Boinked the first one two nights later and did so for about 2 weeks. Mid way through the 2nd week the 2nd comes over and we got busy for a week. Girl 1 left for college at the end of week 2. Girl 2 got with another dude. Girls 3 and 4 came over together and I had my first threesome. I bragged to friends readily (and they acknowledged it, bonus points).

I'm not a party person so I don't think I'll ever have to worry about alcohol related bad decisions but I will say I think having the heart to come up with a contingency plan goes a long way compare to not having one and end up just cheating.

First thing first though, she's obviously a very naive girl to think this contingency plan is ever good. But I will applaud her for being self aware enough to knows she cares enough about this relationship to not want to cheat and hurt the boyfriend, but don't trust herself enough to be able to resist temptation. Many people wouldn't even think of that until the morning after the deed. And she's right, if the boyfriend feels insecure about the relationship he will wonder if you banged someone regardless if you assure him or not. So with that factor I say just lay it out there is a fair thing to do.

But that means you have to be able to be alright with your fella landing some and trust that what he did is equivalent to what you did, and whatever reason he should be okay with you doing it is what you need to tell yourself why it's okay for him to do it. If you can't do that then what are you doing?

Before my vacation, I [F24] asked my boyfriend [M25] to open our relationship temporarily. Now he’s regularly having sex with some girl in our apartment and I’m heartbroken.

I’m pretty fucking upset right now. I’m going to do my best to explain everything that’s happened.

I’ve had an extended holiday (3 months) planned with my best friend (Tory) for years. We have always talked about it and my boyfriend (Daniel) knew we were going to do it. She finally finished college this December and we put our plan into action.

Another friend (Michelle) went on a similar trip years ago. She and her friend both had long term boyfriends at the time, and they both ended up cheating on the trip. A while later their friendship fell apart, and they both revealed each others infidelity. It got ugly. Michelle and her boyfriend broke up, her (ex)friend stayed with her boyfriend but from the sounds of it their relationship was severely damaged.

At first I thought they were absolutely horrible for doing it, but after talking to her I could see their side of things – months of no sexual contact/release, being in a party atmosphere, of course there would be temptation. She’s young, attractive and gets lots of male attention. The encounter was purely sexual, she was drunk, and they used protection. The next day the boy was out of her life completely and that was it. I vehemently disagreed with doing all this behind her boyfriend’s back though.

Talking with Michelle about a month ago, she asked me what I’m going to do about Daniel. I honestly hadn’t thought about it like that, I felt like I could easily go 3 months without having sex. And I’d never want to betray Daniel’s trust. But Michelle made a good case for ‘opening’ our relationship while I was away – she said (paraphrasing): “Of course you love Daniel, but traveling is about experiencing new things, and that includes sex. You’ll say it won’t happen now, but you just have to trust me that once you’re there you’ll feel different. Daniel is going to wonder either way if you’re fucking other guys on your trip. Just be upfront with him and see what he says.”

And so that night I talked to him about it. I explained that I wasn’t going to be looking to fuck every guy I see that I’m attracted to, and that my love for him was as strong as ever, but I also wanted to be able to act freely and party like other girls my age. It was more contingency if anything – I don’t plan on fucking other guys, but if it happens, it happens. A night of partying half the world away with people I’ll never see again shouldn’t ruin what we had here. I’d insist on using protection. And of course he would have the same opportunity as me, he would be able to freely see girls if he chose to. He wasn’t happy, bu said he understood. He said “You’ve tied my hands. If I tell you I forbid it, I’ll still be worried if you’re being true to your word. By expressing that this is what you want, there’s nothing I can do to stop you.” Daniel’s a bit of a homebody – he goes out with his friends on occasion, but most nights he spends in our apartment playing video games or watching netflix. Given his lifestyle, I wasn’t overly worried he’d be hooking up with all these random girls.

Me and Tory left on February 17th. It’s been eye-opening and a ton of fun. But it’s also been stressful. We haven’t done any partying, we talked to some guys one night but nothing came of it. Tonight I checked my email at an internet cafe and there was a message from Kay, a sweet old lady who lives above us in our apartment complex. I have debated for days whether to send this to you and potentially ruin your vacation. But you deserve to know the truth. Daniel has been seeing another woman since you left. There is no doubt he is seeing her, she has come over most nights and I have heard them being intimate. You deserve so much better. I’m so sorry.

I thought I could handle this open relationship arrangement. I can’t. This message shattered my heart into a million pieces. This isn’t what I intended at all, I wanted the freedom to act in the moment. He is taking this as a free pass to regularly fuck some girl. And I have a feeling I know exactly who it is, a girl from his work who was always overtly flirty with him.

I regret ever taking Michelle’s advice and opening my stupid mouth. I don’t want him to fuck other girls. I don’t want to fuck other guys. I want this slut out of my apartment NOW!!! I am a fucking wreck and need other women’s opinions. Tory has been so unhelpful, basically telling me to grow up and that I got what I asked for. No shit? People aren’t allowed to change their minds or regret their decisions?!

How do I go about contacting him and expressing that this needs to stop NOW without coming across like a crazy hypocritical bitch? And let him know that I will be 100% faithful on my trip?? I don’t even know how I’m going to look at him when I get home. I am beyond hurt, this feels so wrong and so sick.

I am going to bed now to try and get some sleep. I will check and respond to all comments tomorrow morning. Thank you

EDIT: guys, seriously stop it. I know I fucked up, I brought it all on myself. Kicking me while I’m down isn’t helping. I’m not asking for your opinion on my stupid selfish decision, I’m asking the best way to approach this and fix it. Tory says I should email him saying “what I said before about opening our relationship was a mistake. I haven’t slept with anyone here and I don’t want to. You’re my partner and I don’t want to compromise what we have. Please be faithful as I will be to you. I love you.” Simply don’t tell him about Kay’s email or that I know that there’ s another woman. Thoughts?

This isn’t what I intended at all, I wanted the freedom to act in the moment. He is taking this as a free pass to regularly fuck some girl. Although the acts are the same, you're comparing two different outcomes.

One was her being selfish and wanting to have sex with others on her own. The second is a group decision that he immediately regrets. I don't see why he didn't deserve sympathy. The problem in his story was he probably moved too quickly. The problem for her was she was only thinking of herself.

You mean the motives are different. Maybe. Maybe she thought she'd be cool with him sleeping with another girl, but it sounds more like he's having another relationship.

"I thought I could handle this open relationship arrangement. I can't."

It doesn't really sound like "I was 100% sure my boyfriend was a loser who couldn't get laid". It sounds more like, "I thought on the off-chance he got laid I would be cool, but now I realize I'm not". Which is very similar to the other story.

She thought it'd be exciting to add the possibility of a fling to their relationship, but when it happened she couldn't handle it. She was stupid, and it does seem like she thought she was getting the better end of the deal, but that's still not enough to justify "Ahh, that's rough dude, I feel for you" versus "THAT BITCH GOT EXACTLY WHAT SHE DESERVED!"

That's totally different. The guy had a fantasy but didn't realize he would feel different about the reality. It doesn't sound like he blamed anyone else or evaded responsibility. Maybe he should have tested the waters a bit before jumping straight into a foursome, but he got exactly what he asked for. He wasn't trying to get away with anything.

In this case, it's transparently obvious that the girl wanted to sleep around with zero consequences and didn't think her boyfriend could get laid. She acts like she couldn't control herself on vacation but doesn't consider canceling the trip or ending the relationship. Finally when it turns out that she can't get lucky and her boyfriend can, she says "this isn't what I wanted at all," melts down, and considers concealing what she knows in her email home in order to manipulate him.

Eh, no. That's not correct. At least, not completely.

She states that she realized the arrangement was a mistake. She outright says in her post:

There's no reaching with this one. She acknowledged she would be tempted to sleep around in another country. She claimed this was in the interest of "experiences" while traveling. She clearly didn't think her boyfriend would be getting any action while gone, judging from the line about her boyfriend's lifestyle and being a homebody. She ended up going overseas, not having the experience she was expecting, and then felt betrayed because her boyfriend didn't have the same bad luck she did. While I don't know the person, going from the way she worded this she would have zero issues if the situation was reversed and he got none and she was out fucking other guys.

I feel the same way. Stumbled in from /r/popular and am a little saddened to see all the "hah, got her" comments. I guess that's the purpose of the sub. Though I always thought it was more about the shutting down "I'm cute so give me things."

I don't take the line about him being a homebody to mean that she banked on him being faithful because he couldn't get any. I think she dismissed the possibility of him having sex before she could fully contemplate how she would feel about that.

She messed up and didn't think the consequences through. Now that she understands them she doesn't like them. The fallout of this depends on her and her boyfriend. Maybe when she comes back she can talk it through and they can come out stronger. Maybe he realizes her lack of maturity and bolts. Maybe they can't reconcile the outcome and split up.

Everyone in a committed relationship either wonders or has fantasies about sex with other people. Most leave it as that and don't peruse anything, the strongest reason why is due to how we'd feel if the tables were turned.

Either way I don't take this story of some evil queen who is mad that things didn't go as planned. I read it as an immature girl who didn't think and process things fully before making a mistake. Now she wants to heal the wounds. Rough life lesson.
