Isn't the whole point of jails to have a severe impact on criminals?

Fuck this scumbag.

[–]matt_512 16 points17 points18 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yeah this is not a fair sentence.

[–]ThirdTurnip 11 points12 points13 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Remove Stanford from the equation and I'd bet his sentence would have been more fitting.

Remove Stanford from the equation and I'd bet his sentence would have been more fitting.

Add a nice, deep suntan and you get the same thing. Class and race, that's why this shit happened. If he were a Tyrone or a Billy Bob, he'd be doing hard time for many years.

[–]TBFProgrammer 15 points16 points17 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

I take it your expectations haven't exactly been lived up to. Care to retract your misleading remarks?

This is what happens when judges set a biased precedent intended to benefit one group. Judicial precedents, you see, apply to everyone. In this case, the claim that the impact of sentencing women to jail would have too severe on impact on them is simply being applied to a man.

Let me be very clear, the sentence is way too lenient for an assault charge where no provocation exists. This convicted criminal should most definitely should be in jail for several years at least. All that the preceding paragraph exists to state is the mechanism through which this lack of justice came to pass.

[–]lporiginalg 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Too lenient.

[–]clybourn 26 points27 points28 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

He was sentenced as though he's a woman.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 10 years ago* (0 children) | Copy Link

My thoughts exactly. Virtually all the arguments in favour of a two tiered justice system talk about how jail is "unfair" for women, and they typically mine the fact their future is often ruined by prison, making it a lifetime sentence (arguably) for a crime that typically wouldn't have a lifetime sentence.

IMO, attacking someone who is drunk should probably ruin your life. Make them work hard to win back trust, win back the right to a career, etc. and that goes for both men and women charged with violent offenses.

sentenced to six months in county jail and probation. Prosecutors had recommended that Turner receive a sentence of six years, but judge Aaron Persky determined that Turner's age — 20 — and lack of criminal history warranted him a much shorter sentence.

had he been black he would be hung!!!!!!

this is bullshit, he was caught in the act. how does he get off really?

[–]never_said_that 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

6 months is a disgusting sentence. If someone is guilty of rape they should spend a large chunk of their live in prison.

[–]mikesteane 6 points7 points8 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

No better (or worse for that matter) than all those cases of women getting absurdly light sentences. The punishment does not fit the crime here.

I have no problem with it staying. Look at the most popular opinions! None of them is defending that fuckface. The one comment trying to go soft on him, is discussing what happened before the act: gets downvoted to -9. In a thread where the most popular comment has +23 points.

Unlike /r/Feminism, /r/AskFeminists, or /r/TwoXChromosomes this sub does not moderate that much. Here you can post shitty things men do. You are not allowed in the previous ones. Here you can debate people. In the other subs, you can't. Here you can deviate from the original subject and discuss things with users. In the other subs, it is removed for derailing.

I agree with everyone else. This guy is a scumbag and should have got much more prison time.

However, compare the reactions here to the ones on twoX where they're saying they hope the guy gets raped in prison.

But is it inherently leftists who oppose male rights?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Traditionalism is just as Gynocentric as Progressivism. That is why they feminists still use insults that would have been acceptable 100 years ago against the manhood of a male who does not cater to women.

[–]ThePigmanAgain 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

As someone who -- reluctantly -- thinks of himself as a leftist, i can tell you that most of the shit falling on men's heads is coming from left wing assholes.

Hold on a moment. Media report court cases sloppily, emotionally, and sensationally.
The poster Necro pointed out Brock Allen Turner did not penetrate with his penis, but a finger. The articles, if read carefully, call it a "foreign object". They also state he, as well as the victim, had a blood-alcohol level a multiple of the legal number for intoxicated.
One article makes it clear they met at a party, left, lay down together - and that he may not even have realised she had passed out:
https://archive.is/7WcAm
I also question the "intent" charge of which he was convicted, which essentially assumes he would have gone on to penetrate her with his penis when he did not actually do so; he might well have stopped once she did not react to his finger-foreplay.
To summarise, an intoxicated male, young and never before in trouble, put a finger in an intoxicated female. That makes the 6-month sentence (followed by probation for how long? also registration for life) seem more reasonable. That MRAs rushed to judgment shows how easily media can manipulate both wording and emotions.
Edit: I have just noticed Civil's citation of her admission that - sometime earlier - he had asked permission to insert a finger, and she'd said yes. That, combined with the fact that both were intoxicated, might form the basis of an argument that he committed no crime at all. (He might still be a jerk.)
In other words, is this new feminist law? Does later drunkenness now negate earlier, explicit consent?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I actually read several different articles on this guy. Some of the other articles stated that her blood alcohol limit was 3 times the limit and his was twice the limit. So they were both pretty drunk at the time. He stated she consented. They said she was to drunk to consent. They were both drunk at the time. I think he should not have been convicted at all and the low sentence probably reflects the ambiguity of the case. This is the sort of case that has been discussed here before. If two drunk people hook up than who is the rapist? Also it is important to remember, even though the title implies otherwise, HE WAS NOT CONVICTED OF RAPING ANYONE.

[–]oshmkufa2010 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I don't see why so many of you have such a problem with this. Yes, it does kinda suck that they'd let a rapist basically go free with such a slap on the wrist, but that's exactly how they've been treating female rapists and other female criminals all along. Society needs a bitch slap of wisdom. If you ask me, just let them swallow their medicine for once. Maybe then they'll finally realise that letting criminals off the hook to spare their feelings IS NOT COOL. Of course it'll need some female suffering to finally arrive in people's heads, but... Well, this fight has been fought on the backs of innocent men nobody cared for long enough.

[–]ThePigmanAgain 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Yes, this is a bad thing. But let's not forget that it is an exception -- most people who get such lenient treatment are women, not men.

[–]Leinadro 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Bullshit.

[–]rg57 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

You took away my worth, my privacy, my energy, my time, my safety, my intimacy, my confidence, my own voice

That just sounds like BS to me. She got herself drunk out of her mind. Was he also seriously drunk? We're not told.

She cannot say whether she consented or not. All we have is that someone saw them, when she appeared to be unconscious.

This is why I say that all sexual assault laws ought to be based on actual harm, not taboo. There appears to be no evidence of any harm whatsoever in this case. Get out of my court.

[–]NecroDance123 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

I didn't even realize that the legal definition of rape was recently changed (a few years ago). I thought this guy actually stuck his dick in some unconscious girl, but instead he just fingered her (which is now legally rape). Still despicable, but does fingering seriously deserve the asking sentence of 6+ years? I feel like there is a difference between sex and sticking your hands down someone's pants. Glad he was charged with intent to rape as well though, because we pretty much knew where this was heading.

[–]Asher-D 1 point2 points3 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

What really? This isn't rape then, it's sexual assault.

[–]NecroDance123 -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Legally it's still rape because the definition (goal posts) has recently changed. When I was growing up, I was taught that rape was having sex with someone without consent or could not give consent and anything else was sexual assault.

But yeah, if you read the article or look around on-line, he put his hands down her pants and probably was going to rape her. 6+ years in jail for that? Er, I don't know...It's definitely sexual assault but I guess my programming from a different time tells me it isn't rape and should carry a lighter sentence.

[–]James32015 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Rape and sexual assault are not the same thing.

Brock was charged with : Assault with intent to rape an intoxicated woman, sexually penetrating an intoxicated person with a foreign object and sexually penetrating an unconscious person with a foreign object

They dropped the rape charge at some point and charged him with the other three.

[–]AtomicBLB 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I just saw this post on the front page. I am conflicted because I really want this piece of human filth to be punished more. However he got the slap on a wrist in which I am accustomed to seeing the female equivalent get in these types of crimes.

I just want sexual assault and rape to be punished equally, without a gendered lens. Person A commits wrongful sexual act against person B. Just punish them the same. Nothing else matters at all. Feelings, parenthood, their background, their potential, etc shouldn't matter.

[–]Emimagick 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

Feminists scream rape culture because of men like this who get lighter sentences due to daddy's money. I've seen this posted by three different feminists on my FB today. It's not rape culture. It's one incident where a man got the same sentence a woman would have anyway. If they think jail would affect him harshly, good. That's the point of jail. He's the kind of person who needs to be incarcerated if proven guilty, and it's men like him who force other men to deal with false rape accusations and being 'guilty until proven innocent'.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

The comments on feminism sub range from sexist to racist

[–]ThePigmanAgain -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

Given such leniency, i can only assume that he identifies as a woman.

[–]cymrich 0 points1 point2 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

well the judge certainly seems to have identified him as a woman...

[–]Anonymous--Rex -1 points0 points1 point 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

While six months strikes me as too short, it's nice to see this level of concern actually be applied to a male. I'm typically not a fan of first-time offenses ruining people's lives, but this type of sentence is also not enough of a deterrent. I suppose good sentencing wouldn't be newsworthy, though.

[+]Deansdale -11 points-10 points-9 points 10 years ago* (7 children) | Copy Link

The details are sparse but I bet his story is that the girl left the pub to have sex with him of her own accord and this turned into a "rape" only because the law treats women like children.

Also, I find the testimony of the victim laughable:

You took away my worth, my privacy, my energy, my time, my safety, my intimacy, my confidence, my own voice

That was you drinking yourself to a coma you cretin. Passing out behind a dumpster means you're worthless anyways, regardless of what happens to you afterwards. If he did indeed rape you it just means he's worthless as well.

Edit: you assclowns can downvote me all you want, in another article you can read I was right:

Prosecutors say Turner met the woman, who is not a student, at a party on campus, then assaulted her after she passed out from drinking.

It's not like he wandered around in an alley, found an unconscious women and started fucking her - they got acquainted at a party and then left the place together.

[–]cymrich 13 points14 points15 points 10 years ago (4 children) | Copy Link

maybe it started as you suggest, but if she passes out its definitely time to stop...

[–]Deansdale -5 points-4 points-3 points 10 years ago (3 children) | Copy Link

I know, but still, I can see the judge evaluating these things before reaching a verdict, something people on the internet completely ignore. 6 months in prison for consensual sex between two drunken people during which one of them passes out seems not only more reasonable but maybe even a bit too harsh. It comes with a criminal record and a place on the sex offenders list, if you think that's too lenient you probably should reconsider the weight of his "crime" compared to the effects it will have on him.

[–]ABC_Florida 3 points4 points5 points 10 years ago (2 children) | Copy Link

Having sex with a passed out woman is not even cool when she's your wife of 10 years. That's still rape. Doing it to a woman, you met that night, is even worse.

[–]Deansdale -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (1 child) | Copy Link

You do realise I never said it was not rape? I said 6 months in prison, a permanent criminal record and being registered on the sex offenders' list is enough punishment for having drunken sex. Do you disagree? Should we execute him or something?

[–]ABC_Florida 2 points3 points4 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

I do realize. But having sex with an unconscious person is still not what you are referring to:

having drunken sex.

[–]exactlythi3 -3 points-2 points-1 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link

this. exactly.

[–]ThePigmanAgain -2 points-1 points0 points 10 years ago (0 children) | Copy Link
