In the past couple of years my wife has brought up more and more that I am emotionally abusive every single time we have an argument. She picked this up from going to various blogs about relationships and such. I believe there can be such a thing as emotional abuse, but I feel the term gets used so loosely it can basically apply to ANY negative interaction two people have. I never lay a finger on her, never even raise my voice to her, but there are times when just my words cause her to get EXTREMELY angry/upset with me. Just the other day she flew into a rage and attacked me physically (hitting, slapping, punching) because I made a sarcastic comment during an argument. She always says her physical attacks are justified because they are all she has left against me; I wear her out through my emotional abuse and manipulations. My problem is that I don't even know or realize I am being abusive, and it seems like anything I do wrong at any time can handily be put into this impossible-to-prove category of abuse.

Many times I have no idea what we are even arguing about, because it always starts so trivially. Usually what happens is I will say something or ask her a question, she will accuse me of being insensitive and rude and demand an apology. I'm stubborn and don't want to apologize because I have no idea what I've done wrong. Or I'll apologize and she'll sense that I am being insincere because I honestly don't know what I did wrong. She'll then say by me even arguing with her, I am hurting her more. It becomes this impossible mire of quicksand that usually ends with her screaming at me that she hates me, never wants to speak to me again, etc. Or sometimes, if it's really bad, she will just flat-out physically attack me.

I don't want to come across like I'm looking for pity, or to bash on women, I would just like to know if others out there have been accused of emotional abuse. I'd like to hear other stories. How did you react? Just accept the fact that you're an abusive man? Push back against the idea? How does one STOP being emotionally abusive? It's such a vague and tricky category to me. This is my first time posting anything, so forgive me if I'm not doing it right.
