Thoughts on a new men's issues site

I've been toying with a similar idea, too. If we could get together some skilled volunteers in areas such as indexing and referencing, and the use of wiki-type software, then such a reference could not only be built but hosted at multiple locations.

This is just an idea that has popped up a few times, and is not endorsed by this sub. In any case, such a project would need to be independent from possible takedowns.

I follow two mens rights issues pretty closely: selective service/conscription and double standards with regards to sexual abuse and the lack of justice abused boys receive. I have a list of sources I absolutely love but right now they're mostly in my head and I have to try to remember enough keywords to google it every time I want one. AFAIK reddit doesn't have any system for saving a set of links so if you were willing to start some sort of wiki I'd be happy to contribute sources in those two areas.

If you choose to make a site, keep in mind feminists might ddos your site, and possibly contact the web host (in masses of numbers) to get it taken down.

I don't think anyone would complain about having more resources out there! I can’t really answer question #2, but here’s my take on #1:

I think that the key to a site being used (in my limited experience) is for it to offer something unique or, if not unique, something targeted. You want to be the signal, not the noise. For instance: Boys and Men in Education has very targeted content (a lawsuit database RE: college sexual assault cases; general education research) and a relatively targeted audience (Title IX lawyers; advocates for males in education). By having a clear mission, a specific audience, and offering unique content, sites like this add something new to the ecosystem and strengthen other sites. However, if someone were to start up a new site that was basically just a mirror of BME, then it wouldn't get traffic and would end up diffusing the message/ecosystem.

To that end, let's look at the sites you listed: /r/MRRef & /r/mensrightslinks are a kind of inbox for the MHRM - people find all kinds of things and funnel them there for general knowledge (plus some knee-jerk commentary). Mrarchivist.com is a database of citations with no context and little commentary, and definitely not a wiki. Those don't seem to overlap with what you have in mind, which means that they'll be resources to you rather than competing signals.

The others (reference book, wikimannia, AVfM wiki) make it a bit more murky. This is where you decide if it makes sense to rebuild the wheel. Compare exactly what you have in mind with these. Is what you want to do measurably different, or just a minor difference in delivery/flavor/format? If it’s the former, I think starting a new site is a no-brainer. If it’s the latter, the question becomes: would it make more sense to contribute to (or even take over) an existing site?

Building a site is more than just doing the writing. It’s the admin, the expenses, and (most importantly) the reputation-building. If what you want to do is already being 95% accomplished at an existing site, why not just join them as a contributor? That way, you leverage all of their infrastructure & reputation and still do the good you want to do. Hell, half of the great sites like this would love to share the load! Some that are no longer updating (like Feckblog) might even be willing to hand over the whole kit ‘n’ caboodle. Presto: pre-built site with pre-existing content and reputation. No starting from scratch, and you can hit the ground running.

Just a thought. Think through what you want your end state to be and then ask yourself "how much does this differ from what exists?" If it only differs 15% or so from what's already out there, consider contributing to/offering to take over what's already there. If it differs more, go for it - it'll probably be worth the effort.

I would use a site that linked to studies and statistics.

For example, I know that in January, Statistics Canada released a report saying (in part) than men made up 55% of the Canadians who reported domestic violence in 2010-2014 (they called it "equal") and that nearly 40% of the total DV victims who were injured were male, and that nearly 30% of the total DV victims who got PTSD symptoms were male. (They didn't report the percentages... you have to do the math yourself from the raw data). It would be useful to have these numbers available somewhere, with the source document linked to them.

I would also use a site that had links to some anecdotes. For example, when I want to show that women lie abut rape, I'd like to be able to show some examples. Google makes it easy, but it could be even easier than that.

yep, i agree, Feckblog is a good choice, also toy soldiers site has a page, can't remeber what it's called, "index" ? it has maybe 200+ links, problem is there not labelled, just numbered, but they are all excellent, go back years.

Having experience with trying to do what you are proposing I'll tell you this, it's a lot of work and takes a massive amount of time and you will be harassed by feminists.
Think hard about this before you start?

I think the market is saturated with sites for men's and women's issues. If there was a site that actually took on the issues in an attempt to resolve them, I think that would be very successful. As a gay guy, I see a bunch of men slagging off an analysing an issue, but not actually come up with ways to resolve problems we encounter. Example: it's no use moaning about women reporting men for domestic violence when the same bloody men won't get off their asses and report every physical assault a woman commits on them. If all women have lengthy police records for violence against men, fewer men will suffer the indignity of false accusations and arrest for domestic violence. Actions and advice such as this will greatly further the men's rights cause.

The Biggest issue is that references and academic resources are ignored by the majority.

It's also often soleless as you work and all too often you will encounter those who demand that they have more knowledge and understanding on every subject .... and no inclination to provide a single reference in support.

Failure in submitting page changes to search engines coupled with failure by others to link to the resource causes low ranking and a downward spiral.

Resources also need to avoid US Centric Bias and address all issues on a Global Basis.

right now anything you do to educate or remind people how discriminated against men are in society would be helpful. we live in a world where the media mocks mens suicide, rape and issues because they are so full of feminists. one more news site or information site about mens issues is not TOO MUCH it is VERY MUCH NEEDED!

my only suggestion is that if you do this; please make sure it remains on point. if we start getting bogged down with anti feminisim, and bad women type details, it will do nothing but damage the intent of helping mens rights.

also i'm always willing to lend a hand where i can (tho with darksouls 3 coming out soon...... my availability is questionable).

You basically want a Wiki of sorts to keep everything organized - stats, quotes, links to various sources and examples etc., a compendium of information that can be grown and referenced.

Sounds a lot like what you've already linked above. Especially Wikimannia.The problem is that you have too many of them and there isn't a defacto standard or consensus with the group. You get this effect: http://xkcd.com/927/

The solution is we all just need to start using one of them I vote Wikimannia. Only problem.:

1) you need to moderate the content fairly, it must remain a knowledgebase amd must not get derailed with either feminist vandalism, or antifeminism / woman bashing

2) how do you do #1 without censoring the community of people who would want to actively edit and maintain it and without dedicating enormous amounts of personal time and energy, and if you do invest that energy how do you remain politically fair and neutral in the eyes of the community?

There in lies the challenge.

I had one idea:

A wiki, but in order to make edits you sign in with your Reddit credentials. The value of your edits is based on the number of upvotes your comments amd submissions on /r/mensrights get. If you are active in this community amd say things people want to hear, you get more of a voice on the wiki and vice versa

Only problem I Reddit, to my knowledge, has not yet implemented a three-legged oauth system like that for single sign on. Not like how Facebook/Google have it anyways, and I would require significant modification of the wiki engine.

I would like a source that digs a little deeper for male victims.

For example when a female teacher rapes a young man there is never words shared from the victim. Yes I will assume that we are still at a point where male victims can not express their thoughts in many words but in time other victims can build upon the thoughts and feelings expressed by others in the past.

I think this is a great idea. A catchy name/slogan (not just "men's rights") will help a lot.

The best way to effect change is to tell our stories. The more people hear about the injustices that are out there, the more they will be motivated to take action. It takes time to reach a critical mass, and every little step helps.

for it, but then that might detract from the seriousness from it. (also I don't want to get doxxed)
