First of all, your title is misleading. There is no "feminist group" involved in the case or mentioned in the article.

I know a bit about this case. The girl, Eleanor, was not so innocent: she had worked as a high-class escort when she was in university. Her call-girl name was "Porsche". Then, she was fortunate enough to hook up with a young millionaire financier, Alexander Economou, (an apt last name for a financier.) The idiot had no idea that she had worked as an escort in the past. He dined her and wined her and bought her expensive gifts and shits.

Somehow he found out, and was obviously upset of being lied to and broke up with her over it. I believed they had gone out together shopping in some high-scale store, where she could get him to spend money on her and buy her more nice gifts and shits. Unfortunately for her, (and fortunately for him,) they ran into one of her "customers". He got suspicious or the "customer" spilled the secret. Either way, he found out about her past, and kicked her to the curb.

So Porsche lost her golden ticket. The very next day, she immediately filed a rape charge against the young millionaire. Oh boy was that a stupid move. The police took in Economour. Of course, she put him in a position in which he had to tell all to explain himself. He told the police everything: about why he broke up with her and her escort past. The police investigated and decided not to charge him. Then the police decided to investigate her for prostitution. D'oh!

Economou, who was socially respectable, (remember: he did not hook up with her as an escort; he had no idea she was an escort,) decided to also hire a lawyer to conduct a private prosecution to clear his name. Eleanor or Porsche or whatever then realized, oh shit, her dirty little secret would soon be outed. So she decided to kill herself instead of facing the music and being publicly shamed (and losing her chance of ever hooking up with another rich guy again.)

That's the gist of it. I read about the story awhile ago, so you guys can google it to confirm the story. Honestly, he did not do anything wrong. She made the decision to become a prostitute and to lie to her boyfriend about it, which led to the breakup; then she foolishly made a false rape allegation as an attempt to get even over the breakup. So was he not allowed to tell the truth to defend himself from a false rape allegation? Was he not allowed to clear his name? IMO, her own actions, her own choices in life, put herself in her final position.

I've pretty much lost all respect for British media. It's tabloid. Whatever the truth of this (tragic) situation we won't know because the "rape culture" (it sells eyeballs to advertisers) fad has taken over.

They should stick to topless girls on whichever page it was.

(And a suicide is an awful thing indeed, especially when someone so young is involved.)

There doesn't appear any way this could penalize the victim of her false accusation who used the UKs procedure for private prosecution. It's an inquest to her death.

Of course, it begs the question of what it could possibly find. That an accused is mentally and emotionally unstable is not a reason to not continue with a prosecution.

Besides the criminal behavior of the woman in this case, the police and justice system seem to have contributed strongly to the outcome. They escalated this case from what could have been a woman trying to use them and not succeeding to a globally known scandal by pursuing it with no evidence.

Simple due process and treating the accusation like any other, that required evidence or at least something other than just believing someone unquestioningly, could have made this case a minor mistake by an unhappy woman.

Institutionalized sexism doesn't help anyone. Nor does dropping due process. Due process doesn't just protect the accused. It protects society. It protects everyone.

She made a false allegation against the guy and was willing to ruin his life for her gain, He simply was holding her accountable for her lies and she couldn't cope with facing the music of her own warped shitty house of cards when it came crashing down.
