If you listen to the boy, he says things like "I got HER pregnant", as if she had nothing to do with it, an innocent bystander... We've perpetuated the understanding that a man take account for something they were both responsible for. These statements need to be challenged at every turn.

No mention of the option to abstain from parental responsibility if he was the father. Instead, everybody is saying: "If you are the father, you'll take care of the child, right? You'll help raise this child that despite being a child yourself?" The mother immediately answers that OF COURSE he will, and he says he will once he gets a chance to speak for himself. I don't know why this annoys me so much, but it does. I guess it reminds be that while a woman can get an abortion, and of course give the child up for adoption if it is born, men will be forced to pay for children they didn't want or possibly couldn't take care of.

The word "rape" isn't outright mentioned, but she is clearly framed as the bad person and the audience clearly dislikes her. Maury, the host, even mentions to the woman that many believe she committed a crime.

There's much more screwed up things about that show than this. That said, I do think the woman should be punished (not by a TV show, but by the law) and I don't think it should be the responsibility of the boy to care for the baby (which he won't be, because he isn't the father - but even if he was the father, it still shouldn't be an expectation).

I find these shows dissapointing in general. She's most dissapointing but he chose to have sex justifying the risk with the stupid idea that he magically can't get her pregnant. The audience is little more than a mob on a high horse, attacking her for the sense of superiority it gives them.

Worse is that they all seem to think that the right and wrong of it matters as to who is the father. As though he shouldn't be the father because of their relative ages and that will somehow reflect in the DNA. It's the same denial of reality that leads to this situation in the first place. "She won't get pregnant because I am thirteen." is just the same as "It won't be his because he was thirteen". Collective denial of reality.

However, there is a baby in this, up on that screen. That baby has an actual father. That girl obviously slept with enough men at the time that she isn't sure which one it is. That poor baby has no chance of growing up in a stable family. That baby is the victim in this and the mother is the abuser.

And yes, she commited a crime; statutory rape. She won't be charged but what good does that do anyway?
