One aspect I think is worth considering is paying the alimony up front if possible. There are pros/cons to the approach. I was fairly sure my ex would not get married any time soon. I paid up front so that initially I was asset poor but I have been cash flow rich from day 1.

Its honestly maddening that alimony is non-deductible and the receiver doesnt have to claim it as income. I pay my ex more than minimum wage a year and to her its free money. Fucking dumb.

I got divorced in 2017. Still have to deal with the exwife because the kids are still young.

But damn, makes me kiss the ground each day. I divorced a SAHM that refused to work. 11 year marriage and the judge, well, she just hated my exwife. Gave her $0 alimony and told her to get a job.

Yup, it’s a reason why if you divorce a SAHM you can easily have her getting more of your post tax income than you do

Ya, and don't forget not only is it non-deductible, but the change also can push you into a higher tax bracket costing you even MORE money.

I agree the 2019 change is another weapon by the government to fuck the primary alimony payer; men. But I guess your trying to say consider a lump sum payment in cash in lieu of a higher alimony payment settlement, because there's no longer any tax benefit in alimony.
