It’s true. Divorce is a business for lawyers. Getting their clients hopes up for a favorable settlement. Get them to make this divorce their “hill to die on.” Have the STBX’s spend every last time they can on billable hours. And then have them do a settlement once every dime is spent. Every property is sold off. Every asset has been pawned. Then leave the now-ex’s in bankruptcy court.

I liked my AZ divorce. AZ judges don’t allow the shenanigans that other states allow that drag out court cases for years and years.

I watched one of the legal proceedings via Zoom and got that distinct impression from my wife's lawyer. Lots of irrelevant ad hominem attacks designed to make me angry and want to go to war.

My first legal boss had me work on a case where the eccentric (i.e. crazy with money) client was trying to trademark the sun and then charge royalties to every country on earth for using the sun's rays. When I told my boss "He can't do that, you told him that, right?" My boss said, "It's his money, he can do what he wants with it." Young, stupid me thought that meant the answer to my question was "Yes." It was not. A few months later, my same boss deposited a cashier's check into the common client trust account. The check turned out to be forged. The bank dishonored the check and wiped the trust account clean of other client's funds. Firm folded. He cut me a personal check for $1,000 and sent me on my way. Job lost. Just signed a mortgage, premature daughter in NICU ... and that, kids, is how I got into divorce law. Where the true self-hate and regret began ...

My ex-wife’s lawyer bragged about his delay tactics to my face. He also brought an associate to every meeting so would double bill her on time. He would do things like demand crazy discovery, we supplied 3,000 pages, then he would show up in court and claim we weren’t being responsive to discovery.

Judge only had 15 minutes so didn’t dig into details but eventually, after almost two years, announced she was appointing a ‘discovery master’, which is a lawyer or retired judge that both sides pay to review discovery and ensure compliance. It eventually came out my ex was looking for crypto money that didn’t exist, and claiming I owned companies that didn’t exist.

He also announced they were waiting for me to start a new company or get a new deal they could then attach and claim 50% of, since in MA technically assets are joint until divorce is granted.

After almost 2 years of this nonsense I applied for (and was accepted into) grad school. Good luck going after 50% of the assets of a PhD student.

When ex started balking about payment after running up nearly $200k in bills just on her side, he fired her the day before court one August.

New lawyer, a few other changes, we settled by November. After 2 years. No children. Short term marriage.

This is a scam of giant proportions, these people, including judges, are just there for making as much money as possible on other peoples misery. Forget about "in the best interest of the child" and see to it that you have as much customers as possible by giving away free money (alimony and excessive child support) and you will certainly make a pot of gold. My lawyer and her lawyer both stalled at times. How hard is it to pick the phone up and settle. Oh we have to follow a process they say. They slowly milk you tell you’re dry. My case finally settled now I have to go sign the papers. Prob be another couple hundred for 10 minutes.

Divorce lawyers are truly scum of the earth!!! My lawyer and my ex wife’s were just both rotten humans. My ex went silver bullet. My lawyer wasn’t very good to me. It was a terrible experience. The two lawyers were friends and each one would sit on paperwork for days the whole time charging us just racking up the hourly charges. One statement showed where my lawyer charged $125 for reading an email I sent. Another $125 for doing research on said email and another $125 for responding to it. $375 to read and respond to my email that was a very basic question.

hahaha thanks i found the exact thread and your exact downvoted replies and upvoted them for you bro lol. ability to pay, exactly. The OP on that thread sounds like the most decent divorce lawyer ever and they freaking hate his guts for taking responsibility for screwing over his client's life.

The lawyer was heavily considering waiving a final 16K bill after losing big, having previously billed the client unknown tens of thousands, and the lawyers about shit their pants.
