Oh this has been my whole life. Men always asking me to repeat myself. I finally learned to get their attention first, say their name, pause, wait for acknowledgement, then carefully begin speaking, making sure to lead with something easy and concrete. All the time watching them to make sure their attention is still on me, they’ve not started staring at their screen again or getting distracted by something across the room.

With a woman, I can just start speaking and can say things quickly and in an order that makes sense to me and I can usually feel sure that she’s following me. I can’t remember the last time, barring a language barrier, that a woman asked me to repeat myself.

Round about my 35th birthday was also the time when I started just refusing to repeat myself. Unless it’s my boss or a client, if someone doesn’t hear me the first time, I tell them never mind. Or just silently stare at them, they often then miraculously recall what I’ve just said.

Verbal communication is an interesting thing all right, fraught with facets of class, power, gender, race, you name it.

Yes I think men are becoming increasingly brain damaged from porn and are incapable of

paying attention
when it doesn't involve their dick or earning money
following a story with moving parts that requires visualization or imagination
making inferences or 'guessing where the story is going'
remembering who the actors in the story are because they weren't paying attention and didn't remember from last time

so they can't feel suspense, drama or interest in the story because they're just stupid and bewildered by words.

They do it to me too. It’s obnoxious. I think it’sa form of negging, they want you to feel like you aren’t important enough to listen to so they’ll do it even if they hear you.

I’ve started doing one off two things, either I start speaking really loudly and slowly like we did with my grandpa when he was hard of hearing or I speak really slowly and use smaller words and hand motions to help them understand so everyone around knows they’re stupid and e we have to stick to little words.

They’re trying to embarrass us by acting like we aren’t good enough to listen to, turning it around on them is working well for me.

They are usually thinking about what they gonna say next. Or if you tell them a funny story, they already start to think about even funnier story.

Yep. What makes it even worse is when they know I'm deaf in one ear and talk back in a low voice. So I have to ask them to repeat themselves, they think it's hilarious.

You're not the only one that thinks this. It was one of the driving forces behind my recent breakup (that, and the fact he moved to Germany without feeling the need to discuss it first) whenever we 'talked' I couldn't actually tell him about my day, cause he'd zone out. It's just blatant disrespect, especially considering I used to listen to his rants about every.little.thing.

This doesn’t happen to me, but I really don’t talk that much and if someone ignores me one time I pretty much never try to tell them anything again.

Yes, me too! I like to talk and I read a lot of books, so my vocabulary isn’t basic. I work in a male-dominated industry. I repeat myself a lot.
