Found this on IG, at first I thought it was sweet, then I realized in fact this is just more covert misogyny. You should respect woman because that is what descent human beings do, not because you have a female figure in your life that motivates you to be nice.

Meh, gonna have disagree with this one. I don’t think this guy’s a covert misogynist at all. I think he really does want women to be treated equally and with respect because we’re human beings. I think he’s just expressing his feelings about equality in a slightly ham-fisted way.

I always try not to get too nit-picky with things like this. Calling a guy who’s sincerely trying to be a HVM a misogynist because he doesn’t use the correct wording to voice his thoughts on gender equality, does us way more harm than good, IMHO.

He’s not saying that his relationships with his mom and gf are the reasons he’s calling out his friends; he’s just saying that his standards for treatment are the same as his for his mom and gf. Two different things. I see nothing wrong.

Idk, I think this particular example isn't so bad. It does get a bit ridiculous when you see people saying, "'as a father of a daughter'/ 'as a brother to a sister'/ as a son of a mother'- I think women should not be discriminated against" (or whatever). It's stupid, and having a female relative is obviously not a prerequisite for thinking women should be treated with equal respect and dignity. On the other hand, even though it's a dumb shorthand, people use it a lot even in other cases- e.g.: "well, I have a daughter who's autistic, and being on the autism spectrum doesn't mean X." Using a couple people you know and love personally and treat well as a standard of how EVERYONE deserves to be treated isn't wrong intrinsically, I think the issue comes in more when a connection is explicitly drawn between, in this case, believing women deserve dignity and rights, and being related to women personally. Like guys who are misogynistic their whole lives but are very protective of their daughters- I know guys like that who will always say, "well I have a daughter, so I know that actually what women really deserve and want is X."
